England must confront old spin concerns

The Ashes are regained, but England have been horribly poor at The Oval not least in their playing of Nathan Lyon which does not bode well for challenges ahead

George Dobell at The Oval22-Aug-2015Leonard Cohen almost certainly wasn’t thinking about England’s tour of the UAE when he wrote “I’ve seen the future, brother: it is murder” but he might as well have been.To see England’s batsmen grope and prod at the offspin of Nathan Lyon at The Oval was to be filled with trepidation for how England will manage when they take on Pakistan in a couple of months. They were criticised for urinating on the pitch the last time they celebrated winning the Ashes here in 2013; you could make a strong argument to suggest they did something far more unpleasant on it this time.Lyon is a fine bowler. He is the best Australian offspinner since Tim May, at least, and perhaps the best for some time before that. But he is a traditional offspinner – the sort that England players used to be brought up against – and this Oval surface is what old timers might have described as a slow turner. The surfaces in the UAE will turn and skid far more.In Pakistan’s legspinner Yasir Shah they will also come up against a bowler with far more weapons than Lyon or Steven Smith, the part-time legspinner who dismissed Alastair Cook here. Bearing in mind that England lost 3-0 the last time they played Tests in the UAE, at the start of 2012 after they had just risen to No. 1 in the world rankings, it is hard to be wildly optimistic over how they will fare this time. Mahela Jayawardene, who will be with the team as a batting coach for the first couple of weeks of the UAE tour, may feel he has to be an alchemist.England have long had a poor reputation against spin bowling. While they may have consoled themselves, at times, in the belief that it was only against wrist spin or mystery spin that they have struggled, there have been enough days against the likes of Rangana Herath and Abdur Rehman – pretty conventional spinners – to suggest the problem goes someway deeper. The evidence has been clear to see in this match. England batsmen have been dismissed in ways that betray basic failures against basic spin bowling. That is not to say the bowling was anything other than good; but that it was often clear what Lyon was trying to achieve and England’s batsmen really should have had the ability to counter it a bit more effectively.Take the example of Ben Stokes on the third day. Stokes was drawn into a drive by a beautifully flighted off-break delivered from round the wicket that turned, perhaps out of the rough, took the outside edge and carried to slip. Easy.Or take the example of Jonny Bairstow. Pushing half forward with hard hands to one from over the wicket, he turned a catch into the hand of short-leg as obliginglyas if he had been organising catching practice. Horribly simple.Or take the example of Jos Buttler in the first innings. With Lyon bowing round the wicket, Buttler was drawn into driving – with his front foot having moved perhaps an inch – and was bowled through a gate so large you could place stone lions on either side.On each occasion, the batsman made a basic error. On each occasion, the batsman was too timid to leave their crease, yet pushing for the ball in a vaguely aggressive manner. On each occasion they were unable to reach the pitch of the ball and pushed with hard hands. Perhaps because they have so little faith in their defence against spin bowling, they seek to attack instead. Against good bowlers in helpful conditions at Test level, it is a method that is destined to fail.Cook showed – as he did in India in 2012 – how it could be done. Learning from his first innings dismissal, when he was bowled playing half forward to a fine delivery that turned and beat his outside edge, he made a noticeable effort to reach further forward in the second innings to smother the spin. And when Lyon compensated by pulling back his length, Cook deployed his trademark cut shot. He did not attempt to push for the ball – only four runs in his innings came in the V between mid-on and mid-off – and while he finally fell – failing to get to the pitch of a leg-break from Smith – he had given his side an outside chance of salvaging a draw if the weather intervenes on days four and five.England should not allow that to mask the obvious deficiencies they have shown here, though. They need to examine why they are producing so few spin bowlers and why they are so poor at playing it. They need to ask questions of those charged with developing the skills and put in place mechanisms to correct the shortfalls.Part of the problem is the lack of quality spin bowling that developing England players face in county cricket. With much of the County Championship programme squeezed into the opening weeks of the season – weeks when the pitches offer little assistance to spinners – there is less reason for counties to invest in spinners with red ball skills.Instead, there has been an emphasis on slow bowlers – and the distinction between slow bowlers and spinners is relevant – with white ball skills. England have a plethora of men who can bowl a tight couple of overs in a T20; they have almost nobody who can bowl in the attacking manner Lyon has managed in this series. The problem is exacerbated by the policy of financially incentivising counties to select young players. It has purged the game of mature performers; not necessarily international-quality players, but experienced performers who added to the quality of the domestic game and the knowledge in domestic dressing rooms. But the ECB meddling does not stop there. They have also had a habit of penalising counties who prepare pitches that offer ‘excessive’ turn, while pitches which offer excessive assistance to English-style seamers are usually tolerated. There was an obvious example at Hampshire a couple of seasons ago when, despite the game going into the fourth day (albeit the first was washed out), the club were harshly penalised. As a consequence, some of the skill has gone out of the game. There are a few old-timers left – the likes of Gareth Batty and James Tredwell – but they are the wrong side of 30 (quite a way the wrong side in Batty’s case) – while Nottinghamshire picked 40-year-old Gary Keedy earlier this season.Men from a previous age – the likes of Vic Marks, John Mortimore, Eddie Hemmings, Don Shepherd, Rodney Ontong, Norman Gifford and Brian Langford – who all played little or no Test cricket, would all soar in the current playing age. There will be calls to recall Monty Panesar ahead of the UAE trip. But while he bowled nicely there on the last tour and it is pleasing to see his personal problems have eased sufficiently for him to return to the professional game, it would be a major surprise if they have improved sufficiently to render him able to tour.Instead, alongside offspinner Moeen Ali and legspinner Adil Rashid, England may look at the left-arm spin of Zafar Ansari to the UAE. Not only has Ansari claimed 39 first-class wickets this season – he is missing Surrey’s current Championship game due to a hamstring injury – but he has, at times, opened the batting. His batting average is only 30.18 but he is young – 23 – bright and his talent and temperament are rated highly. It would be a big ask for a young man and a reminder that, despite the Ashes win, England are at the early stages of their development. There is a long, long way to go.

Sunderland make contact to sign "incredible" 24 y/o for Le Bris in January

Sunderland are believed to have made contact over the signing of an “incredible” player who could bolster the Black Cats’ Championship promotion push.

Sunderland transfer news

Sunderland kept their hopes of returning to the Premier League looking strong over the weekend, following a 1-0 win at home to Portsmouth. While not exactly the most memorable of performances, three points were all that mattered for Regis Le Bris’ side, who sit fourth in the table.

New signings this month could help bolster the Black Cats’ chances of going up this season, with Chelsea youngster Harvey Vale one player who has been linked with a move to the Stadium of Light in the coming weeks. The attacking midfielder is also wanted by Anderlecht and Heerenveen, though.

Sunderland have also reportedly made an enquiry about the services of former Leeds United midfielder Glen Kamara, who is now plying his trade at Ligue 1 side Rennes. A loan move has been mooted for the Finland international.

One worrying exit rumour that has emerged relates to centre-back Dan Ballard, with rivals Newcastle United thought to have sent scouts to watch him in action. Black Cats supporters would understandably dread the idea of him moving to St James’ Park.

Sunderland make contact with "incredible" ace

According to an Italian journalist, relayed by Football Italia, Sunderland have made contact with Roma midfielder Enzo Le Fee over a move to the Stadium of Light.

The report says that the Black Cats have spoken to the 24-year-old’s representatives, as they look to snap him up during the January transfer window amid a direct request from Le Bris.

Le Fee could be a great signing for Sunderland before the end of the January window, coming in and adding genuine quality in the middle of the park at a key point in the season.

The Frenchman is now an established top-level footballer, making 10 appearances for Roma and also enjoying spells with FC Lorient and Rennes in the past. Football talent scout Jacek Kulig has hailed him as “incredible”, too, back in 2022.

At 24, Le Fee appears to be the perfect age to come in and make an impact for Sunderland straight away, possessing plenty of experience and also being young enough to improve further in the coming years.

Added quality and depth could be priceless between now and the end of the season, with legs potentially tiring as the campaign goes on, so the Roma man should be considered an exciting option to bring in.

The fact that contact has already been made suggests Sunderland could soon be confident of getting their man, potentially choosing to submit a bid next.

Vitori's premature celebration, Rayudu's non-existent one

Plays of the day from the first ODI between Zimbabwe and India in Harare

Liam Brickhill10-Jul-2015The premature celebrationBrian Vitori wasn’t quite as miserly as his new-ball partner Tinashe Panyangara in his opening spell, but with shape through the air and fizz off a fresh pitch he quickly found M Vijay’s outside edge 20 balls into the match. When he got one to lift off a length past Ajinkya Rahane in his very next over, with a clear sound as ball passed bat, Vitori thought he had a second and immediately set off in exuberant celebration. He’d almost passed square leg when the umpire’s call of ‘not out’ muted his revelry. Replays showed the ball had only brushed the thigh pad.The catchWith 58 catches in one-day internationals, Hamilton Masakadza has one of the safest pairs of hands in Zimbabwe’s squad. He put them to good use to get rid of Rahane, the batsman fending at one from Donald Tiripano in the 18th over. Masakadza had been slightly unsighted by Richmond Mutumbami, who was up to the stumps, but shifted quickly to his right to hold a superb reflex catch at chest height, breaking a troublesome 51-run stand. The spellThough he has often opened the bowling for his old franchise, Southern Rocks, Chamu Chibhabha’s bustling medium pace has rarely been called upon by Zimbabwe. He’d only taken 21 wickets in 69 ODIs before today, and only once before – against Pakistan in Karachi in 2008 – bowled a full 10 overs. There was some surprise when he was brought on in the 13th over, but Chibhabha immediately found his groove and not only bowled his full quota, but did so in an unbroken spell that brought two wickets for just 25 runs. The belated celebrationWhere Vitori’s wicket celebration had been premature, Ambati Rayudu’s acknowledgement of his half-century was subtle to the point of being non-existent. As a ripple of applause rounded the ground after a single to square leg brought his fifty, Rayudu simply stood mute at the non-striker’s end. His body language suggested a man with plenty more work to do: it was only when he went on to a faultless hundred that Rayudu cut loose with an emphatic, roaring, fist-pumping celebration. The replaySikandar Raza kick-started his knock with a brace of lapped sweeps off consecutive deliveries from Axar Patel in the 27th over, the shots identical in their execution and placement to fine leg. He had an opportunity to do something similar six overs later when Harbhajan Singh served up two long-hops one after the other. Raza nailed the first one precisely in the air to deep midwicket, bisecting the fielders, but when he attempted to replay the stroke off the next delivery he found the fielder to give Harbhajan his first ODI wicket in four years.

West Ham contemplate January signings amid Lopetegui struggles

Manager Julen Lopetegui has endured a nightmare start to his London Stadium career, with West Ham struggling to galvanise any kind of winning momentum or clear footballing identity during his early tenure in charge.

West Ham have been slammed under Lopetegui, and they’ve been accused of regressing under the 58-year-old’s watch following the departure of David Moyes, who guided the east Londoners through back-to-back campaigns in Europe and won them their first trophy in decades.

“I don’t think Lopetegui is capable of turning this around,” wrote journalist Roshane Thomas.

“He was the wrong appointment. This team has regressed, has no identity, the players look despondent and the formation/tactics are questionable. Lopetegui wants fans to reserve judgement until May, but there is little encouragement that things will improve. He keeps persisting with out of form Rodriguez, Summerville brought off early again and another game with a different formation. I could go on all day.”

In the past few weeks, reports have claimed that Lopetegui is urging the West Ham hierarchy to make January signings, as the former Real Madrid boss looks to preserve his job at the London Stadium.

A lot of the rumours have surrounded the potential addition of a new attacking option, amid striker Niclas Fullkrug’s struggles with injury, but it is now believed that West Ham are contenders to sign Brighton starlet Tariq Lamptey.

West Ham "well-placed" to sign Tariq Lamptey

According to Football Insider, West Ham are “well-placed” to sign Lamptey over interest from the likes of Everton, and Brighton could push him out the door in January, rather than lose him for free at the end of his contract.

This represents an opportunity for the Irons to bring in a capable deputy for Aaron Wan-Bissaka in the long-term, considering Vladimir Coufal is out of contract at the end of this season, although they will also face competition from Tottenham, with Postecoglou keen to find an alternative option to Pedro Porro.

Andy Robertson challenges Tariq Lamptey

“He’s such a level-headed character – I don’t think I’ve met anybody quite like him, in fairness, in terms of how humble he is,” said former Brighton boss Graham Potter in 2020.

“I’ve got no concerns for him in terms of what the outside noise says. He just wants to help the team, he wants to do well for himself and his family. He’s just a fantastic character.

“He’s got such electric pace, but lots of players have that. It’s having the ability to run in behind. The ability to run into space is often what separates players. Tariq does that, but he’s got courage, he does his defensive work. The boys love him and he’s in a good place.”

Liverpool must sell £160k-p/w star who’s one of Trent’s "closest friends"

Liverpool are flying. Of course, they were held to a draw against Newcastle United on Wednesday evening, dropping points in the Premier League after seven victories on the trot in all competitions, but the incredible start to the season remains intact.

It’s foolish to think that Arne Slot’s Reds will win every game they play, though it’s frustrating that Fabian Schar was able to restore parity late on.

Defensively, Liverpool have been solid this season, making improvements on last year’s efforts. The Anfield side top the Premier League and Champions League tables so far, but in order to achieve illustrious heights across many years under Slot’s wing, some areas do need some work.

The areas where Liverpool need to improve

Liverpool flattered to deceive in defence at St. James’ Park, lacking the robust and steely quality that Ibrahima Konate brings to the table, fusing his athletic skillset with Virgil van Dijk’s cultured style.

Of course, Van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold are both out of contract at the end of the season, and though FSG are hoping to tie down both stalwarts to fresh deals, it’s gravely concerning all the same.

Losing two core parts of an imperious backline would be to Slot’s detriment, for both stars transcend their so-called defensive roles and operate at world-renowned levels.

Trent, Salah, Van Dijk

Liverpool could also add an extra element to the thriving midfield. Ryan Gravenberch has been in fine fettle this season but looked tired against Newcastle and needs some competition at number six. Martin Zubimendi, who is still believed to be of interest to Liverpool, could be the missing component there.

Elsewhere, though, there are one or two mainstays who could actually find themselves dislodged from their starting position. While he’s been an integral part over the years, Andy Robertson may be one of them.

Why Liverpool should replace Andy Robertson

Liverpool signed Robertson from Hull City in 2017, completing a £10m transfer that was met with derision from many pockets of the Premier League.

Andy Robertson in action for Liverpool.

This young and relatively unknown Scotsman was surely not the kind of player that Jurgen Klopp’s project needed to propel themselves to new heights. Liverpool, it seemed, were content with mediocrity, settling back into the familiarity of passableness.

How the detractors were silenced. Robertson is one of the greatest left-backs in Premier League history, conqueror of the biggest prizes and only trumped in creativity by his prodigious partner Alexander-Arnold.

The thing is though, Robertson’s creeping toward his 31st year and has served tirelessly within Liverpool’s highly-charged system for many years, completing 316 appearances.

Described as a “Duracell Bunny” by Liverpool writer Leanne Prescott, Robertson has operated at full throttle for many years and indeed is starting to look like a lesser version of the superstar who was hailed as “the best left-back in the world” by Klopp about three years ago.

Liverpool defender Andy Robertson

There’s still a lot to like about the veteran, who ranks among the top 1% of full-backs across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for passes attempted, the top 2% for progressive passes and the top 3% for shot-creating actions per 90, as per FBref.

But then he’s found himself jockeying with Kostas Tsimikas for that first-choice spot this season, Slot seemingly unsatisfied with the £160k-per-week Robertson in phases.

Andy Robertson and Arne Slot

Though he’s regarded as one of Alexander-Arnold’s “closest friends” – as revealed below – the Tartan Army skipper cannot keep his place in the side over the coming years if it is going to hamper Slot’s system from hitting its apex.

Liverpool need to be ruthless, and though tying Alexander-Arnold down to a lucrative new contract is crucial, so too is the good of the collective team.

Former scout Mick Brown, recently speaking to Football Insider, believes that the Reds are getting ready to focus on strengthening the left-back position in 2025, with Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez and Antonee Robinson – who has been recently hailed as “one of the best left-backs in the world” by journalist Dougie Critchley for his exploits at Fulham – at the very top of the shopping list.

Compared to Robertson, it’s perhaps fair to say that both carry greater athletic and rounded qualities at present and that Liverpool might be wise to make the bold move.

This isn’t to say that Liverpool’s long-time servant needs to be sold, but a reduced role might be on the cards over the coming campaigns and this would only prove to elevate Slot’s exciting system higher.

Ultimately, Liverpool still have a reliable left-back in their mix, with elite ball-playing skills and a wealth of experience besides. The Redmen need to evolve over the coming years though, and Robertson might need to be axed at some point soon.

If Tavernier is sold: Rangers already have 3 perfect future Ibrox captains

Glasgow Rangers are already on the ropes in the race to secure the Scottish Premiership title and are in danger of missing out on the trophy for a fourth year in succession.

Philippe Clement’s side are already nine points adrift of Celtic and Aberdeen, who are both unbeaten, and need an incredible run of form and a drop-off from their rivals to have a chance of overtaking them.

The Light Blues have already lost three times in the top-flight this season, once each to the Hoops and the Dons, and dropped points in a 0-0 draw with Hearts on the opening day.

Their struggles, once again, in the league could see a major change to the squad, with a recent report suggesting that a key player could be sold.

Football Insider recently claimed that Rangers are planning to cash in on James Tavernier next summer, with his contract up in 2026, because of his ‘declining’ performances on the pitch.

If the Ibrox giants go ahead with their plan to sell the English full-back, the Gers would need a new captain, and here are three possible options for Clement to choose from.

1 Jack Butland

Jack Butland

One contender to take on the armband is goalkeeper Jack Butland, who joined the Light Blues on a free transfer from Crystal Palace in the summer of 2023.

The 31-year-old star is one of the most experienced players in the dressing room and has played at a high level, with 87 appearances in the Premier League in his career.

Butland could be the oldest player in the squad at the end of the 2024/25 campaign, as the only two players currently older than him are James Tavernier and Leon Balogun. The former is reportedly due to be sold and the latter is due to be out of contract at the end of the month when he turns 37.

This suggests that he could be in the best position to pass on advice to the younger members of the squad and would have the most experience in big moments to calm the troops when needed.

Butland has also been incredibly reliable for the Gers on the pitch, both in terms of his performances and his availability. Since his move to the club last year, the English titan has made a whopping 78 appearances for the club in all competitions – playing every single minute of league action in that time.

As you can see in the table above, the former England international has kept 24 clean sheets in the Premiership since the start of last season and saved 71% of the shots against his goal.

This shows that he has been a safe pair of hands, saving the majority of the efforts against him to keep a healthy number of shutouts, and that is why he should be a contender for the captaincy, as he is a strong performer and an experienced head in the dressing room.

2 John Souttar

John Souttar

Another strong option to be the new captain if Tavernier is sold is central defender John Souttar, whose performances have been impressive this season.

He initially arrived at Ibrox on a free transfer from Hearts in the summer of 2022 but endured an incredibly frustrating debut campaign with the Gers, with 13 appearances in all competitions due to a long-term absence with an ankle injury.

Souttar worked his way back to fitness and played 41 times in all competitions during the 2023/24 campaign under Michael Beale and Clement, scoring two goals from centre-back.

As you can see in the table above, the former Jam Tarts star has been a dominant force at the back for the Scottish giants and helped to keep an impressive six clean sheets in ten league outings.

Butland described Souttar as “brilliant” in October and claimed that the Scotland international “gives everything for the club”, which suggests that he is captain material, as the defender is committed to the team and plays with passion.

The colossus is also vastly experienced in Scottish football, with over 200 appearances in the Premiership, and could be a great role model for the younger players to look up to, as he has been there and done it in the top-flight, which is another reason why Clement must consider him to be the next skipper.

3 Dujon Sterling

Rangers midfielder Dujon Sterling.

The third potential option to take on the captaincy is versatile star Dujon Sterling, who has yet to nail down a regular starting spot in his favoured position at right-back.

His lack of regular starts in the team may make this selection seem odd, but Football FanCast recently posted an article suggesting that the sale of Tavernier could open the door for the former Chelsea man to establish himself on the right side.

Sterling has only started four games at right-back since the start of last season, with other outings at right-midfield, defensive midfield, left-back, central midfield, and left-midfield, but the captain leaving in January or next summer could allow him to play there regularly.

Glasgow Rangers defender Dujon Sterling.

The 25-year-old star has shown his commitment to the Gers by being willing to play in such a variety of positions for the club, being ready to play wherever he is needed, across 53 appearances.

Since his move to Ibrox, Sterling has not missed more than two games in a row through injury, which suggests that he has the availability required to be the captain, as it would be pointless for Clement to appoint a new skipper if they are constantly missing through injury.

At the age of 25, the former Stoke loanee is the youngest player on this list by several years and that means that he would have the time to grow into the role and be the long-term replacement for Tavernier, both in terms of the right-back position and the captaincy.

Rangers can hit gold with "exceptional" replacement if they sell Tavernier

Glasgow Rangers are reportedly considering a move to sell the Ibrox legend James Tavernier.

AC Milan drew Feyenoord 1-1 in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, resulting in their elimination from the 2024-25 competition. The fell to the Dutch side 1-0 in the first leg of the series, and failed to secure a victory over their opposition in Leg 2.

U.S. internationals Christian Pulisic and Yunus Musah started the match for the Italian side, as did Mexico star Santiago Gimenez, who scored their lone goal on the day. After an initial cross from Pulisic into the box, the ball was headed back into the mix of the six-yard box, where Gimenez was to head home into the back of the net.

However, in the second half, their promising performance turned to disappointment when fullback Theo Hernandez was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for simulation in the opposition box.

Reduced to 10-men, the conceded an equalizer to former Philadelphia Union star Julian Carranza in the 73rd minute, ultimately handing Feyenoord a 2-1 aggregate lead. Unable to find another goal, the final whistle blew on the match, and their European season.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The were on track to take a regulation victory on Tuesday up until Hernandez's sending off, which ultimately cost them the match and a potential spot in the Round of 16 in the competition. Pulisic, meanwhile, was subbed off the pitch in the 63rd minute for 19-year-old Davide Bartesaghi in unexpected fashion. Gimenez was also removed eight minutes later, with Feyenoord drawing level two minutes after his removal. Musah played all 90 minutes plus stoppage.

Questions will surround Portuguese manager Sergio Conceicao for his decisions to remove his most in-form players, but ultimately, being reduced to 10-men changed the match — with a lack of discipline from the veteran fullback costing his team.

Now, the only have the Coppa Italia to play for, with the Serie A title out of reach and being eliminated from European competition.

He’s like Rice: West Ham should brutally ditch Alvarez & sign £17m star

West Ham are 14th in the Premier League and floundering, without a discernible style of play or indeed a modicum of confidence. Thrashed by Nottingham Forest last time out, it’s a situation tail-spinning out of control.

Points and positive performances are needed, but in fairness to Lopetegui, he’s not being helped by his players, with Edson Alvarez stupidly picking up his second red card of the season at the City Ground.

Alvarez’s careless and clumsy challenge was a personification of his season, which in itself was a further personification of the travails under Lopetegui’s management.

Edson Alvarez

The Mexico international was monstrous at times last term, signed for a £35m fee from Ajax to help replace Declan Rice. This year, he’s been a mere shadow, languishing at the epicentre of the Irons’ struggles.

What’s more, the 27-year-old doesn’t look like he’s putting in his full capacity of performance, something that is inexcusable. Even if Lopetegui is replaced post-haste, and West Ham click back into gear – is he truly the man to anchor the midfield?

West Ham could change tack and sign a former target: Richard Rios.

West Ham should sign Richard Rios

Back when the summer transfer window was open, Colombian journalist Pipe Sierra revealed that West Ham were interested in bidding for Palmeiras star Rios, with further Premier League outfits watching the central midfielder.

The 24-year-old has established himself as one of the finest midfielders playing in Brazil over the past few years, featuring 96 times for Palmeiras and notching 11 goal contributions. He was instrumental in winning the 2023 league title.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

This season, the athletic ace, who stands at 6 foot 2, has averaged 2.4 tackles and 5.3 successful duels per game, as per Sofascore, which bears testament to his muscular physique and combative approach – something that suggests he could neatly replace the struggling Alvarez.

The intrigue seems to be genuine, with reports from only a few weeks ago pointing toward retained Hammers interest. Rios, who is understood to be valued at €20m (£17m) by his Brasileiro Serie A outfit, is a tough and tenacious midfielder, exactly what West Ham need.

Described as a “ball-carrying machine” by analyst Ben Mattinson, he might even be Rice’s successor at the London Stadium, for the Arsenal sensation is known for his energy and forward-driving skill with the ball.

Both players operate in dynamic and progressive roles, but Rios is showcasing some exciting hints of versatility that could see him be the perfect option in West Ham’s midfield, reinforcing it but also transforming it into something more lively and multi-dimensional.

West Ham should seriously consider revisiting their interest in this ‘machine’. He’s cut from a similar cloth as Rice and he has the defensive quality to replace Alvarez.

West Ham should sack Lopetegui and replace him with fantastic 4-2-3-1 boss

West Ham must sack Lopetegui to bring in this “fantastic” coach as his replacement.

England progress in patches

There were numerous significant contributions during England’s run to the tri-series final but they still have one or two issues with the World Cup looming

George Dobell in Perth02-Feb-2015The goodIn playing a settled XI in almost every game of the tri-series (Chris Jordan played ahead of James Anderson in one match), England showed they had finally decided what their best side is and gave them the opportunity to familiarise themselves with their roles. Bowlers understand when they will come on and what is required of them; fielders know where they are to be. After a few months when England have looked chaotic at times, it was a significant step forward.Anderson, returning from a knee injury, bowled consistently excellently and, in conceding an average of only 3.62 runs per over was the most economical regular bowler (12 overs or more) in the tournament. He swung the new ball and was the one England bowler to nail his yorkers in the latter stages. The fielding continued to improve. Ian Bell, effectively replacing Alastair Cook at slip, took a couple of outstanding catches and it was noticeable that the fielders hit the stumps with throws more often than in the past.Despite the pitches offering him little, Moeen Ali delivered his offspin effectively and, in conceding only 4.16 runs per over was the most economical slow bowler (who delivered more than 13 overs) in the tournament. It meant England were not obliged to play James Tredwell and, in theory, should have strengthened the batting.James Anderson’s return to form after injury was among the positives for England•Getty ImagesSteven Finn made an impressive return to the side. While he still has not regained the pace he had prior to the changes he made to his run-up and approach to the crease, he bowled well enough to take 11 wickets in the five matches including career-best figures of 5 for 33 against India. With a wicket every 25 balls, he had the fifth-best strike rate of any bowler in the tournament. After leaking wides for several months – they conceded 71 in seven ODIs in Sri Lanka – England tightened their game to the point where they did not concede more than three in any of these matches. In a format where small margins can make huge differences, it is a significant improvement.England recorded more century partnerships (four) than either of the other sides (Australia managed two and India just one). While none of the batsmen scored runs consistently, Bell, Jos Buttler, Joe Root, Eoin Morgan and James Taylor all enjoyed important innings and will have gained confidence ahead of the World Cup.Stuart Broad took a few games to recover full match fitness. But, by the final in Perth, he was starting to return to something near his best. With the World Cup the focus of this trip, that bodes well. The not so goodMorgan’s 121 against Australia in Sydney was top class but his other three innings contributed just two more runs in total. He has passed 5 only once in his last seven ODI innings and the last three deliveries he has faced against Australia have dismissed him.Moeen was of only two men – Ravi Bopara was the other – not to register a half-century in the tournament. Although he looked in reasonable touch a few times, he was unable to go on and register a significant score.Ravi Bopara struggled for runs and was not asked to contribute with the ball•Getty ImagesChris Woakes was consistently the fastest member of the England attack, exceeding 90mph in Perth, and at times looked to be the solution to some of the side’s bowling issues. But, batting at No. 8, he managed only 12 runs in four innings – by comparison, James Faulkner bats at No. 8 for Australia – and in the final, when he conceded 89 runs from his 10 overs, he showed that his death bowling remains a work in progress.A broken finger ruled Gary Ballance out of contention for the tri-series tournament. While he is expected to have recovered ahead of the World Cup and will probably feature in the two warm-up games in Sydney next week, he will have had limited opportunities to find form. The downside of England’s consistent selection is that those members of the squad who were not included in the tri-series XI – Tredwell, Jordan, Ballance and Alex Hales – will go into the World Cup short of cricket. And the uglyBopara endured a poor tournament. He was entrusted with only three overs as a bowler and averaged just 14.25 with the bat. While his inclusion as the allrounder who offers security with the ball and options with the bat makes sense on paper, his performances will have to improve significantly in the World Cup to justify his continued selection.England played some encouraging cricket in defeating India, the world champions, twice. But the fact is they lost to Australia three times out of three and have now lost eight of the last nine ODIs between the sides. Bearing in mind that Australia are the opponents in the opening game of the World Cup and it does not bode well.Dismissed for 166 in the final and 234 in Sydney, England have now been bowled out within their 50 overs in 11 of their last 17 ODIs. It is not World Cup winning form. The search for a reliable death bowler continues. England conceded 46 form the final three overs in Perth with the absence of yorkers again obvious. The England camp insist that the seamers can deliver as required in the nets, but that they lack the confidence to do so in match situations. They will have to improve if England are to progress to the latter stages of the World Cup.
