All ten caught, and Ashwin's all-round record

Also, declining the follow-on, most away hundreds, and stumped twice in a Test

Steven Lynch02-Aug-2016Have England – or anyone else – ever had a bigger lead than the 391 they had against Pakistan, and not enforced the follow-on?! asked Jared Kingsford from Australia
England have declined to enforce the follow-on on two occasions with a bigger lead than the 391 they had at Old Trafford last week. In Kingston in 1929-30 they led West Indies by 563, but still didn’t make them bat again, instead setting a target of 836. This was a timeless Test, so there was some logic behind the England captain Freddie Calthorpe’s apparently inhumane decision – although he still didn’t win, as West Indies had reached 408 for 5 when the match was left drawn after nine days as the England team had to catch the boat home. In another timeless Test, in Brisbane in 1928-29, England batted again despite a lead of 399 – and went on to win by a record 675 runs. The other two instances of a team not enforcing the follow-on despite a lead higher than 391 were both by Australia against England in recent years: in Brisbane in 2006-07 they led by 445 but batted again, while in Adelaide in 2013-14 they went in again despite being 398 in front on first innings. Australia won both Tests comfortably. Is R Ashwin the first Indian to score a hundred and take seven wickets in an innings in a Test? asked Sunitha Shetty from Bangladesh
With 113 and 7 for 83 against West Indies in Antigua last week, R Ashwin was indeed the first Indian – and only the third man from any country – to ally a seven-for to a century in the same Test. Ian Botham actually did it twice: he made 108 and took 8 for 34 against Pakistan at Lord’s in 1978, then in the Golden Jubilee Test against India in Bombay (now Mumbai) in 1979-80 he claimed 7 for 48 (and 6 for 58) to add to an innings of 114. The only other instance was by the old Australian allrounder Jack Gregory, with 100 and 7 for 69 against England in Melbourne in 1920-21. There have been several further instances of a bowler scoring a century and taking five wickets in an innings: Ashwin had done this before, against West Indies in Mumbai in 2011-12, and followed Vinoo Mankad (against England at Lord’s in 1952) and Polly Umrigar (v West Indies in Port-of-Spain in 1961-62) in achieving the feat for India. All ten Pakistan wickets in the first innings at Old Trafford were out caught. How often has this happened in Tests? asked Chris Goodwin from Italy
This isn’t terribly rare: as this list shows, there had been 68 previous occasions when all ten batsmen in a Test innings were caught. The first time it happened was in Australia’s second innings against England in Melbourne in 1903-04. The record number of catches in a single Test (both sides) is 33, by Australia (18) and India (15) in Perth in 1991-92.Sachin Tendulkar has scored 29 Test centuries away from home•Getty ImagesHas anyone been stumped in both innings of a Test? asked James Bourne from England
There have now been 19 instances of a batsman being stumped in both innings of a Test match. The most recent case was Kemar Roach of West Indies, stumped twice by Kusal Perera off Rangana Herath in Galle in October 2015. The one before that saw Zimbabwe’s Chris Mpofu collect a pair, also against Sri Lanka, in Harare in 2005. Those last two were at least tailenders: rather surprisingly, there have been two opening batsmen who were stumped in both innings as well! They were England’s Tom Hayward (against South Africa at Headingley in 1907) and Bert Sutcliffe of New Zealand (against West Indies in Christchurch in 1955-56).Who has scored the most centuries in Tests away from home? asked Mubbashir Hassan from Pakistan
Not surprisingly perhaps, the leader here is Test cricket’s overall leading run (and century) scorer, Sachin Tendulkar, who made 29 of his 51 Test hundreds outside India. Next come Rahul Dravid with 21, Jacques Kallis with 20, and Sunil Gavaskar with 18. Of current players Alastair Cook has scored 15 hundreds away from home, and Younis Khan 14 (this counts the UAE as home territory for Pakistan). Don Bradman made 11 centuries in just 19 overseas Tests, all of them in England, putting him ahead on percentage (just to compare, Tendulkar played 106 overseas Tests and Dravid 94). Given a qualification of 20 innings, Bradman averaged 102.84 in away Tests; Ken Barrington comes next with 69.18, then Wally Hammond with 66.32. After the first Test in Sri Lanka, Steve Smith averaged 59.78.Yasir Shah conceded 266 runs in the second Test at Old Trafford. Was this any kind of record? asked Stewart Allan from England
Yasir Shah comes in well down this particular table, the 266 runs he conceded at Old Trafford putting him equal 24th overall on a list headed by another legspinner, the West Indian Tommy Scott, who finished with match figures of 9 for 374 (5 for 266 and 4 for 108) against England in a timeless Test in Kingston in 1929-30. Only two Pakistanis have conceded more runs than Yasir’s 266 – Saqlain Mushtaq took 5 for 286 against Sri Lanka in Colombo in 1996-97, while Haseeb Ahsan, another offspinner, claimed 3 for 275 against West Indies in Georgetown in 1957-58. Only two bowlers have conceded more runs while taking only one wicket: slow left-armer Chuck Fleetwood-Smith took 1 for 298 (the record for one innings) as England ran up 903 for 7 against Australia at The Oval in 1938, while India’s Rajesh Chauhan finished with 1 for 276 in Colombo in 1997-98, as Sri Lanka broke that 1938 Test record by scoring 952 for 6.Send in your questions using our feedback form.

Peshawar Zalmi go from 2 for 3 to 197 for 5 and beat Karachi Kings

Haseebullah, Powell and Kohler-Cadmore half-centuries instrumental to turnaround

ESPNcricinfo staff01-Mar-2023

Haseebullah Khan, aged 19, hit a 29-ball fifty on PSL debut•PCB

Peshawar Zalmi went from one extreme to the other, slumping to 2 for 3 in the first 2.2 overs and then smashing 195 for 2 in the remaining 17.4 to seal a comfortable victory over Karachi Kings in Rawalpindi. It all began what seems like a very long time ago with Mohammad Amir sprinkling some of his magic dust, removing Babar Azam and Mohammad Haris in the very first over.Nineteen-year old Haseebullah Khan, on PSL debut, walked into an innings crying out for help and proceeded to soothe it. A member of Pakistan’s most recent Under-19 World Cup squad, he announced himself with a 29-ball fifty, in which five of his first 11 scoring shots were boundaries. Some of this carnage could have been mitigated had Akif Javed been able to hold onto a simple catch in the sixth over when Haseebullah only had 12 to his name but c’est la vie.Karachi’s dream start turned into a full on nightmare when Rovman Powell joined in on the fun, scoring 64 off just 34 balls. He hit six fours and four sixes during his stay; basically, he was able to hit a boundary once every three or four balls. Sixty-five runs – 33% of the total – came off the last four overs bowled by Javed (14+21), Amir (12) and Aamer Yamin (18). Somewhere in the middle of all that, Tom Kohler-Cadmore helped himself to a half-century as well.Karachi did begin their chase well with Matthew Wade moving to 37 off 26 by the end of the Powerplay. He’d benefited from two lives even at that early stage of the innings – once when he was on 1 (caught behind but not reviewed) and later when he was on 19 (dropped). Karachi would’ve hoped that those were signs of their luck changing but it was not to be. They went from 40 for 0 to 95 for 5 as Mujeeb-ur-Rahman and Azmatullah Omarzai seized control through the middle overs picking up a combined 5 for 56 from their full quota.Imad Wasim (57 not out off 30 balls) threatened something special but even after hitting five fours in an over his side went into the last one needing 37 runs and that typically isn’t possible in a cricket match.

'He runs for two players' – How non-stop Dominik Szoboszlai silenced his Liverpool critics to become a key member of Arne Slot's side

The Hungarian suffered a dip in form after a stunning start to his Anfield career, but he's re-emerged as a huge influence in recent months

It's not always easy but, in general, footballers don't like to look too far ahead. Things can change quickly on and off the field. Getting caught up in trophy talk can be dangerous. It's nearly always best to embrace the 'one game at a time' cliche. Dominik Szoboszlai learned that valuable lesson last season.

He never made any ill-advised or arrogant predictions or proclamations but, looking back on Liverpool's quadruple bid under Jurgen Klopp, which unravelled not long after their Carabao Cup triumph, the Hungary captain now feels he was a little too forthcoming about his team's chances of a clean sweep.

"When I came to Liverpool I wanted to win everything in my first season!" he recently admitted. "So, I don't like to talk about the title now."

Hardly surprising, then, that when Szoboszlai was asked about Liverpool fans singing 'We're going to win the league' during the closing stages of last Sunday week's 2-0 win at Manchester City, he swerved the issue. "I didn't hear that," he said before immediately adding, "I was so tired."

Of course, that could easily have been the case, because Szoboszlai really did run himself into the ground at the Etihad – quite literally, with the exhausted midfielder collapsing to the turf the moment the full-time whistle blew. Just three days later, though, he somehow summoned up sufficient energy to produce another 90-minute display of dynamism as Liverpool took another significant step towards winning the title by beating Newcastle at home to move 13 points clear of second-placed Arsenal.

What's more, Szoboszlai had scored in back-to-back games for Liverpool for the first time since arriving at Anfield in the summer of 2023 – further evidence that a player still being criticised just last month for his lack of an end product has become a staple in Arne Slot's side.

  • £60 million 'steal'

Not many players have made a more immediate impact at Liverpool than Szoboszlai. He'd been signed from RB Leipzig for £60 million ($76m), a not insignificant sum of money, but quickly set about showing why his former boss at Red Bull Salzburg, Jesse Marsch, considered it "a steal".

There were no airs or graces about Szoboszlai, but from the moment he walked in the door, he looked right at home at Anfield. Even the incredibly colourful Klopp was struck by the Hungarian's "charisma".

He clearly didn't lack confidence, either. Szoboszlai took the No.8 jersey once worn by his idol Steven Gerrard (he even has a tattoo inspired by the former Reds skipper) and plenty of comparisons were drawn between the two during the first few months of the 2023-24 season.

Marsch felt that Szoboszlai was actually more like "a modern-day David Beckham" because "when the ball is on his right foot he can put it anywhere he wants. The precision and the pace he can put on the ball is ridiculous. And I say 'modern day', it's because he is more mobile and more dynamic [than Beckham]."

Heavy work load takes its toll

However, it wouldn't be long before Szoboszlai's all-action approach began to catch up with him. After playing every minute of Liverpool's opening 10 Premier League games, he almost inevitably began to slow down, before breaking down. He picked up a hamstring problem in January and never really recovered.

Szoboszlai was directly involved in 11 goals last season, but only three after returning from injury – and all of those arrived during the two legs of the Europa League last-16 tie with Sparta Prague. Tellingly, he ran out of steam around the same time as his team, with Szoboszlai afforded just one start during Liverpool's final seven Premier League games.

Unsurprisingly, he also struggled at Euro 2024 as Hungary failed to make it out of their group. "He was not in top form and this is also a consequence of the fact that he has not been at 100 percent since his injury in the winter," the president of the Hungarian football federation (MLSZ), Sandor Csanyi, told in July. "At the Euros, he had also been struggling with a minor injury for a long time."

  • 'Numbers need to go up'

Thankfully, Szoboszlai has had no such fitness issues this season. He's only missed two Premier League games to date: one through suspension, and the other through illness.

Ryan Gravenberch's emergence as the solution to Liverpool's longstanding problem at No.6 has certainly helped, as Slot now essentially has four versatile potential starters to choose from in midfield (Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister and Curtis Jones are the other three), while Wataru Endo has proven himself an extremely useful option off the bench, a dual-winning machine that can be utilised when team-mates are exhausted and games need to be closed out.

However, while Slot was happy with Szoboszlai's performance and fitness levels during the first half of the season, it was telling that he publicly demanded more decisive contributions from his first-choice No.10 in the final third.

The Dutchman acknowledged that while the 24-year-old's pressing was "outstanding", he needed to be "even more involved in scoring goals and creating chances for us.

"Last season he scored three [in the league] and, for an attacking midfielder at Liverpool, his numbers need to go up." They are now, though.

  • Getty Images Sport

    Stepping up

Szoboszlai has already surpassed his tally of goal involvements for 2023-24 and he's in far better shape going into the business end of the season than he was at this point last year. Indeed, only three Reds played every minute of their crucial and gruelling recent run of five Premier League games in 15 days, and Szoboszlai was one of them (captain Virgil van Dijk and goalkeeper Alisson Becker were the others).

Even more encouragingly, he got stronger as the games got tougher. Szoboszlai was excellent in the 2-2 draw at Aston Villa and would have had a deserved, game-winning assist had Darwin Nunez not missed an open goal midway through the second half.

Mohamed Salah, though, was never going to waste the clever near-post flick that bamboozled Man City at the Etihad, while Szoboszlai then netted the killer second goal after being released into space shortly before the break by the Egyptian.

Shakib Al Hasan becomes No. 1 T20I allrounder

Namibia’s JJ Smit and Zimbabwe’s Raza have also made significant gains following their performances in the T20 World Cup

ESPNcricinfo staff19-Oct-2022Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan has moved up one spot to become the No.1-ranked allrounder in T20Is – going past Afghanistan’s Mohammad Nabi – following his superb outing in the recent tri-series against New Zealand and Pakistan. While Bangladesh did not win a single match in the series, Shakib was the player in form for his team, scoring 154 in three matches at a strike-rate of 150.98. He made a 44-ball 70 in the match against New Zealand and followed up with a 42-ball 68 against Pakistan. He now has 266 rating points, 20 ahead of Nabi.Namibia’s JJ Smit broke into the top five allrounders while Zimbabwe’s Sikandar Raza entered the top ten following their impressive starts in the first round of the T20 World Cup. Trott suffers moment of defeat

This was Jonathan Trott’s lowest moment. The moment when the truth could no longer be concealed. The moment when hope vanished for his international future

George Dobell in Bridgetown01-May-2015Professional sport can be a cruel beast. It sucks you in with whispered promises of glory and glamour and spits you out disillusioned, with broken dreams and an aching body. For every cricket career that ends with a raised bat, you can name many more that end on a physio’s bench or with an awkward conversation in a coach’s office. So it is with Jonathan Trott. Recalled for this tour with hopes that he could put his struggles behind him, it has become clear that there is to be no happy ending to his story. This is the end.It was not just his dismissal here – his third duck in five innings since his recall – but the manner of it. Shuffling down the pitch to Shannon Gabriel, he was in no position to play the short ball that came his way – the short ball against which he has had questions to answer. The involuntary flinch in to the leg side was not the stroke of a man who can open the batting for England in the Ashes. It would be irresponsible to pick him to face Mitchell Johnson and co now.It has been painful to witness Trott’s decline. When he first played Test cricket, he spoke of the experience as “the most fun I’ve ever had” and made it look as if, to him, batting was the most natural thing in the world. At his best – with the century at Melbourne or the century against Pakistan at Lord’s – he looked a masterful player with a calm temperament and uncomplicated technique. He is one of very few England players to win the ICC player of the year award. He has served his country with distinction. But somewhere on the journey it stopped being fun. Somewhere it became a burden. Somewhere, perhaps due to weariness, perhaps due to illness, perhaps due to some technical fault, it became awkward and exhausting. Now batting looks a desperate battle for survival. And the more Trott struggles to understand why this game that used to come to him so easily has suddenly become so complicated, the further he sinks into the mire of too much thought, too much practice and too much analysis. There have been times on this tour when he has been in the nets as early as 7.30am.It was an ugly dismissal for Jonathan Trott•AFPHe is almost unrecognisable from the batsman he used to be. While he used to wait for the ball, a beacon of calm and reassurance, now he shuffles forward, head moving at the time it should be still, his eyes frantic, his anxiety bending him out of shape mentally and physically. Some of those closest to him – and he has family at this match – have considered throwing in the towel for a while. The last year or two have been agony. A relatively simple man, developed in the uncomplicated world of male changing rooms and defined by his love of cricket and his success as a batsman, Trott has been at a loss to understand what has been happening to him. He has been hurt by criticism and suffered for the public nature of his struggles. He has talked of finding the game “degrading”. He talked of his struggles against the short ball as defining him as a man. And, as he lies in his hotel room tonight, it will be the fear that he has let down his team – and, most of all, the captain that fought for his recall – that gnaws the deepest. He may yet have a job to do for England in the second innings. But it is hard to see any circumstance in which he can produce the sort of innings that would justify selection at the top of the order for the Ashes series. This is a salvage operation now.The England management will take some flak for their recall of Trott. And there is no denying that is an experiment that has not worked. But he had ticked every box; answered every question; cleared every hurdle ahead of this tour. He plundered runs in county cricket – sometimes against good attacks – and he struck a double century on the Lions tour. He was analysed by doctors and coaches and psychologists. He seemed fine and why wouldn’t England want a man back in the side who, for a good portion of his career, averaged in excess of 50 in both ODI and Test cricket? It was not an unreasonable call. Indeed, in other circumstances, England might be applauded for their treatment of Trott.

It would be a shame if it is this Trott – the broken Trott – that lingers in the memory. Hopefully, in time, it will be the Trott of old that sticks in the mind.

Hindsight, of course, is T20. And, in retrospect, it is hard to refute the argument that Adam Lyth should have been selected for this match, at least. But the logic of persisting with Trott for the series was to ensure they had a thorough look at him; to ensure he batted without the constant threat of the axe. The logic was sound and Trott can have no complaints. It means that Lyth is likely to make his debut against an excellent New Zealand attack in relatively early-season England. That’s not ideal. But he will do so secure in the knowledge that he will be given a fair run in the team. He won’t be the first or last to serve an apprenticeship.Might Trott’s comeback have been different had it been made in the middle-order? Probably not. The technical problems on display now are the product of temperamental issues. At his best, he was more than capable of seeing off the new ball. Besides, there was simply no position available in the middle-order. Nobody could expect Joe Root, Gary Ballance or Ian Bell to be moved. It would be a shame if it is this Trott – the broken Trott – that lingers in the memory. Hopefully, in time, it will be the Trott of old that sticks in the mind. Hopefully, it will be those flicks off the legs and those sweetly-timed drives through cover. It was nice, just for a moment, to see a big beaming smile as he reached that half-century in Grenada. An encore at the end of a fine performance. And hopefully, in time, it will be those memories that linger in his mind. He may yet have a few years of prolific run-scoring in county cricket ahead of him. Years where he is comfortable and happy and the anxiety no longer pierces. For a while it may be that everything cricket related – the sight of his bat, driving past grounds, his awards and kit – cause him pain.As a cricketer this will be his lowest moment. The moment when the truth could no longer be concealed. The moment when hope vanished. The moment of defeat. But as a man? To suffer situational anxiety and still willingly enter that situation, to fear failure but go into a position where it was possible, to face fears, confront demons and take risks. There is something heroic in that. Maybe, just maybe, as a man, this has been his finest moment.

Freedman pushing Crystal Palace to sign long-term Eberechi Eze replacement

Crystal Palace have their eyes set on raiding the Championship to find their next rising star, according to a recent report. It has been a frustrating start to the Premier League season for the Eagles, as they are winless in their opening seven league games and pressure is already mounting on Oliver Glasner.

Forget Wharton & Kamada: Glasner must unleash incredible Crystal Palace ace

Glasner may have to make tough decision, dropping Wharton for this “incredible” ace

Crystal Palace transfer news

Despite pressure starting to mount on Glasner, the South London side are seemingly already getting some plans in place for when the January transfer window opens. The Eagles could face a tricky January, as it appears that Eberechi Eze is now “open” to leaving the club, being tracked by Liverpool. Meanwhile, fellow midfielder Adam Warton is being looked at by Manchester United.

Eberechi Eze celebrates for Crystal Palace

However, the club have their own plans for bringing players to the club, as it was reported last week that Palace are interested in signing Bazoumana Toure from Hammarby IF. Officials of the Premier League side have been sent to watch the player in person, and he could be someone they look to bring to the club in the near future to strengthen their forward options, costing around £8.4 million.

As well as keeping tabs on Toure, the South London side also have their eyes on a player much closer to home as they look to land another promising young star.

Freedman leading Crystal Palace charge for rising Championship star

The Daily Mirror, via The Hard Tackle, reports that Crystal Palace are interested in signing Romain Esse from Millwall. The 19-year-old has been identified as their next gem to come from England’s second tier.

Palace have a record of turning to the Championship and signing the most exciting talents, as that is where they found Michael Olise, Eze, and Wharton in recent years. The report states that Palace’s sporting director, Dougie Freedman, is a big fan of Esse, as he’s caught the eye this season with his performances for Millwall.

Freedman has personally watched Esse in action twice this season, and he now looks to be personally leading Palace’s charge to sign the promising young star. The midfielder signed a contract extension during the summer, which runs until 2026, but Millwall manager Neil Harris has admitted that Esse will be on the radar of a lot of Premier League clubs now.

Harris said on Esse: “Romain has huge potential. There will be a lot of interest. He has added to his end product this year already. If he carries on doing that, then Romain will certainly grace the Premier League at some stage.”

Esse is a product of Millwall’s academy, impressing in their under-18s before making a breakthrough into the first team during the 2022/23 season. He played 12 times that campaign and then followed that up by playing 25 times in the Championship last season, during which he scored two goals but failed to register an assist. The 19-year-old still has a lot of development to do, but he is seen as a potential long-term replacement for Eze.
