Despite defeat, Kapp focuses on learnings with ODI World Cup in India next year

She said there were lessons to pick up from Wolvaardt not getting enough strike in the final stages of the second ODI

Srinidhi Ramanujam20-Jun-2024To get close to chasing India’s 325 and fall short just by four runs is a massive confidence booster for South Africa, according to Marizanne Kapp, one of the four centurions in the second ODI in Bengaluru. She said this was the brand of cricket they wanted to play, looking ahead to next year’s 50-over World Cup in India. This was after South Africa were reduced to 67 for 3 inside 15 overs on Wednesday. Even the series opener saw them having a collapse upfront, where from 33 for 3, they were eventually bowled out for 122. But unlike Sunday, South Africa fought back hard in the second game but Pooja Vastrakar denied Laura Wolvaardt – who top-scored for the visitors with 134 not out – and South Africa a series-levelling win with a sensational final over.”There were a lot of positives today,” Kapp said after the game. “To get that close is obviously a massive confidence booster especially moving forward, we know we can reach that total. But in saying that, probably after that first four in the last over, it was our game to lose. It’s definitely something we would speak about, but in the future, if we could have maybe tried to get Wolfie [Wolvaardt] on strike a bit more, then maybe… there are a lot of things we could have done differently. But again, to come that close, after starting a little bit slower today, we have a lot of positives to take forward, given that we have a World Cup next year.Related

“It’s [the intent] something we’ve been speaking about. We had a meeting with the batting coach after our first ODI. He said that if we had scored 100 in 20 overs in that ODI, he would have been happy even if we got bowled out. But to score 122 off the 37 overs, it’s not the brand of cricket we want to play. Definitely happy with the way we scored today and got close to the target.”During the chase, Wolvaardt crossed 4000 ODI runs and became the highest run-getter for South Africa in 50-over cricket. Kapp also touched the 3000 mark to be fourth on the list. Kapp, who played as a specialist batter in these two matches because of workload management, has visibly upped her batting in the last 12 months. Since 2023, she has smashed two centuries and four half-centuries in 15 innings to average 68.20 in this format.Coming in at 67 for 3 when the team needed a big partnership, she thrived under pressure and shared 184 runs off 170 balls with Wolvaardt to take South Africa closer to the huge target.”If you look at myself and Wolfie, it’s been a few times now that we have been out in the middle,” Kapp said. “The way my batting has gone in the last couple of years, I have been striking at close to 100, so it’s just a little bit more natural for me. I have found that If I am being positive, I usually score runs more often than not. Whereas she likes to take her time, set herself on and then go after the bowlers. We don’t even have to speak about it. It naturally worked out that way that I am going to be the aggressor, and she takes her time.”At the end of the day, this is why I play cricket for,” Kapp spoke of playing under pressure. “I believe usually in those situations, I perform, and I pride myself in that. Wolfie and I, we enjoy that. Sometimes, you get a bit annoyed or upset if you are tired, but look, no. It’s a team sport, and the two of us enjoy batting together. I feel like games like this, situations like this probably bring out the best in myself and Wolfie.”

Mustafizur, Mushfiqur fail to impress for Rajshahi

Known as the tournament’s ‘entertaining team’, Rajshahi suffered due to a lack of form and seemingly team spirit too

Mohammad Isam07-Dec-2017Tournament reviewRajshahi Kings, last year’s runners-up, did not make it to the top four in this year’s BPL. They had only four wins, hardly looking like a contender for the play-offs.Darren Sammy, who continued as captain, tried his best this time too, but to no avail. A captain is only as good as his team and the likes of Mushfiqur Rahim, Luke Wright and Samit Patel hardly delivered.
Particularly disappointing for Rajshahi was how their two local big guns – Mushfiqur and Mustafizur Rahman – didn’t fire. Mushfiqur made only 185 runs in 11 innings with one fifty, while Mustafizur took four wickets in five games. Among their overseas recruits, Sammy fired at times while James Franklin made some important runs, but batting lower down the order did not always give him enough deliveries to score off. What didn’t workInjuries to Sammy, Luke Wright and Lendl Simmons may have frustrated them during the different stages of the tournament but Rajshahi, as they showed in 2016, are supposed to be a different breed. Spirit alone could have taken them through, but that too was missing this season. What workedThere were some impressive performances from Sammy, Zakir Hasan, Qazi Onik and Mominul but it was all individual; there was hardly a game in which two or three performed in unison. Mominul was their highest run-getter but with just 230 runs, while the veteran Mohammad Sami’s 11 wickets was the most among their bowlers. Sammy, Patel and Dwayne Smith topped the strike-rate charts but the last two weren’t regular in the XI.Tips for 2018A higher investment on run-getters should be Rajshahi’s priority for next season. Better research on local players would be helpful.

INDEFINIÇÃO NO COMANDO TÉCNICO

World Cup 2019 and the curious story of the bails that lost their zing

Jasprit Bumrah to David Warner was the fifth instance at this World Cup of a batsman surviving despite the ball hitting his stumps

Andrew McGlashan09-Jun-2019It has become one of the talking points of the World Cup: the story of the (sometimes) immovable bails. Five times now the ball has clipped, or even clunked, the stumps only for the zing bails to stay in their groove. It follows similar incidents at this year’s IPL and had been seen as far back as the 2015 World Cup.The ICC say that the weight of the zing bails, which have flashing lights built into them, is not an issue with them coming in at somewhere between the weight of traditional bails and the heavy versions umpires carry for windy days.Still, when the likes of Mitchell Starc are clipping the timber at more than 90mph, it is probably fair to ask whether it’s just an extraordinary turn of events or something that needs to be looked into.David Warner looks on as the ball hits the stumps but fails to dislodge the bails•AFP”I think you take the good with the bad in that situation. I suppose with the new – the light-up stumps, the bails seem to be a lot heavier – so it does take a bit of a force,” Australia’s captain Aaron Finch said after seeing Chris Gayle’s stump get flicked by Starc.”I’ve seen it a handful of times now in IPL and Big Bash and stuff where the ball rolls back onto the stumps, where the bails traditionally, one of them will pop off. But yeah, I think it’s just one of those things that you are aware when you’re on the right side of it, you are aware of it a bit easier than when you’re not.”None of the incidents at this World Cup have yet proved pivotal to the outcome, but here’s a reminder of the five lucky batsmen and unlucky bowlers.England v South AfricaRashid to de Kock, FOUR runs, got him, or has he?! What on earth has gone on here? England think they’ve bowled him! It’s flicked the bat on the reverse sweep from outside leg, thumped the outside of the stump and triggered the zing bails but the bails haven’t come off, and the ball has gone for four!New Zealand v Sri LankaBoult to Karunaratne, no run, nearly chopped on! Looking to run it down but had no width whatsoever. Guess what? The ball brushed the stumps, the bails shook but didn’t come off the groove.Irresistible force, meet immovable object•ESPNcricinfo LtdAustralia v West IndiesStarc to Gayle, no run, given out but Gayle reviews immediately! Fullish length on fourth stump angled in, Gayle is late driving as there was a definite noise when it passed the stumps… because the ball has in fact shaved off stump. A little peck! The baby smooch! Not a full pucker to dislodge the bails though. Incredible!England v BangladeshStokes to Mohammad Saifuddin, no run, bowled him … no, the bails have stayed on! Down the leg side, under-edged into the crease, hops up into the timbers and despite an audible clunk of wood, the wicket remains intact!Australia v IndiaBumrah to Warner, no run, Warner drags it back onto the stumps, but the bails refuse to budge. Clatters into the base of leg stump via a deflection off the boot, but the bails stay put. Banged in short and angling across off, Warner can’t get on top of it. He fiddles with it and inside-edges it back onto the stumps. How many times has this happened in this World Cup?

MLS MVP race: Lionel Messi closing in on crown, but Denis Bouanga, Tai Baribo, Sam Surridge and Anders Dreyer are making their case

GOAL looks at the frontrunners for the 2025 MLS MVP, including reigning award winner Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi’s stellar 2024 season earned him the Landon Donovan MLS MVP award – his first regular season honor in the league. Now, he’s aiming to become just the second player to win it twice, the first being Preki, and the first to do so in back-to-back seasons.

But several strong challengers are in the mix.

Evander and Diego Rossi had brilliant starts to the campaign, but a few slow weeks have seen others leapfrog them in the race for candidacy.

Nashville SC forward Sam Surridge, San Diego FC breakout star Anders Dreyer, and LAFC's Denis Bouanga are all coming off brilliant stretches of form in May and early June and are emerging as some of Messi's biggest threats en route to the trophy. One individual, Philadelphia's Tai Baribo, has been there the entire way, though. The Israel international has been one of the league's top performers from Matchday 1 through 18 this season when featuring for the Union, and as things stand, might be the lone individual in front of the Inter Miami star just over halfway through the season.

How does each one rank, though, and who else is still in contention? GOAL presents the latest edition of MLS MVP Rankings.

    1Tai Baribo, Philadelphia Union

The Israel international has emerged onto the scene in 2025 in the most unexpected way possible. Before the halfway mark of the campaign, he surpassed his goal tally from 2024, and he's single-handedly spearheaded the Philadelphia Union's charge to the top of the Eastern Conference standings.

With 13 goals and 1 assist in 16 appearances – 13 of which have been starts – he has been dominant in the final third and is taking MLS by storm as the league leader in scoring as a result.

At Philly, he's found immense success inside the box, out-performing his xG of 9.67 while having a .42 percent conversion rate in front of the net. He's been one of the league's most clinical players, scoring on 13 of his 17 on-target attempts this season as well.

More than a goalscorer, he's also played nine key passes resulting in an attacking opportunity, one of which earned him an assist. He has been an unexpected yet welcome addition to the league's elite attackers this season.

    2Lionel Messi, Inter Miami

The Argentine, after a slow start to the campaign, has really turned it on in recent weeks. Just in the month of May, he scored seven goals, helping lead Miami back up to third in the Eastern Conference after a rough patch of form towards the end of April.

The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner is now up to 10 goals and six assists, totaling 16 goal contributions in just 13 appearances in MLS action this season. He's out-performed his xG of 7.54, and has established a shot conversion rate of .15 percent, with 30 attempts on target this season. In just 1,115 minutes, he's climbed towards the top of the league in goals and assists, despite playing in fewer matches than most due to a mix of international duty and injury.

He trails only Bouanga (78) in total shot attempts this season with 68 himself, while he is second in the league with shots on target, trailing only Hany Mukhtar of Nashville SC (38).

The Argentine put his foot on the gas pedal in May, and is now back towards the top of contention to win the prestigious award as he looks to make MLS history.

  • Getty Images Sport

    3Denis Bouanga, LAFC

The heart and soul of LAFC, Bouanga has been one of MLS' best players since his 2022 arrival within the league. Across the start of the 2025 season, he's scored eight goals and recorded five assists in 15 appearances – 14 of which were starts.

Across all competitions, LAFC are unbeaten in their last 10 matches, and he's been a crucial reason as to why. During the successful stretch of matches, the 30-year-old has recorded a goal contribution in all but one game, including two game-winners in MLS action. The Gabon international also scored the game-winning goal to clinch their berth in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in a 2-1 extra-time victory over Club America, and is riding an immense wave of confidence heading into the marquee summer compeition.

An MVP candidate in both 2023 and 2024, 2025 could finally be the year where he makes a legitimate case to be considered for the prestigious award. After a rocky start to the season for both him and the , he's turned things around, and is spearheading their charge towards the top of the Western Conference standings.

  • 4Anders Dreyer, San Diego FC

The San Diego FC forward is the frontrunner for Newcomer of the Year, but who is to say he shouldn't be in MVP candidacy as well? He's up to 14 goal contributions this season, with six goals and eight assists, which puts him tied atop the league for the moment.

He's helped the expansion side to second place in the Western Conference heading into Matchday 19 of the campaign, and has arguably been the best addition to the league this season. He's coming off an international break where he represented Denmark, and in a 5-0 victory over Lithuania, he scored and assisted for his nation.

For SDFC, he's been one of the most important players on the field for them this season, and leads them in both goals and assists.

With his sublime left foot, he's been a menace to defenders all season long, and doesn't look to be stopping as he looks to lead the expansion side to a top-four finish in the Western Conference come the end of the campaign.

He'd be amazing with Amad: Man Utd battling to sign £63m "animal"

da bwin: It may have come all too late with regard to Manchester United’s Premier League fortunes, although Ruben Amorim’s first-team squad is beginning to look far stronger, ahead of a pivotal last few weeks of the campaign.

da bwin: Against Athletic Bilbao on Thursday night, the dominant visitors showcased the growing depth to their ranks, with the former Sporting CP boss able to call upon the likes of Luke Shaw, Kobbie Mainoo, Mason Mount, Matthijs de Ligt and, of course, Amad Diallo from the bench.

At one stage looking set to miss the remainder of the season, after being struck down with an ankle injury back in mid-February, the diminutive Ivorian has beaten the odds to seal a swift return to action.

Amad Diallo

Previously the shining light of 2024/25, prior to being overtaken by Bruno Fernandes in his absence, the 22-year-old has chalked up 12 goals and assists in just 21 games under Amorim’s watch, having even looked lively during his brief cameo in midweek.

The former Atalanta starlet notably evaded his man down the right flank with a breathtaking piece of skill and trickery late on, with that moment alone signifying just what United have been missing in recent months.

Capable of operating at wing-back or in a number ten berth, the £120k-per-week wizard – who recently signed a new long-term deal – looks set to be a mainstay at Old Trafford for years to come. Now it’s time to start building a team around him…

Latest on Man Utd's transfer search

If Amad’s future is to lie as a number ten, then the role on the opposite side – should Fernandes slot into a deep-lying berth – could be taken up by Matheus Cunha, with the Wolverhampton Wanderers star seemingly edging closer to a £62.5m move to Old Trafford.

Wolverhampton Wanderers' MatheusCunhacelebrates scoring their first goal

That new-look frontline could then be strengthened even further with the presence of a new centre-forward, with recent reports indicating that the Red Devils remain “in the race” for Sporting’s Viktor Gyokeres.

As per Sky Sports Germany reporter, Florian Plettenberg, while it is Arsenal who are “pushing” to sign the prolific Swede, United are among the clubs also battling for his signature, alongside Chelsea and Real Madrid.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

According to Plettenberg, the 26-year-old is able to leave Portugal this summer for a fee between €60-€70m (£51m – £63m), having struck a “verbal agreement” with the Lisbon-based side already.

Previously signed by Amorim from Coventry City on a £17m deal back in 2023, Gyokeres could represent the key to truly kickstarting the new regime in Manchester.

Why Man Utd need to sign the "hottest striker in Europe"

It remains remarkable that the Sweden international was once on the books at Brighton and Hove Albion, yet never actually managed to make a league appearance for the Seagulls, having been sent out on a handful of loan moves during his time at the Amex.

Viktor Gyokeres

As noted by ESPN’s Mark Ogden, it was actually one-time United director, Dan Ashworth, who oversaw the measly £1m sale of Gyokeres to Coventry in 2021, with the player having since gone on to become the “hottest striker in Europe”.

The in-demand marksman had actually only scored four goals during his initial loan move with the Sky Blues, although as his former teammate Jake Bidwell revealed, he seemingly returned a “different animal” following the completion of his permanent switch.

38 Championship strikes followed over the next two seasons, while Gyokeres has since chalked up a breathtaking total of 95 goals in just 98 games in his current home, including seven across his last two Liga Portugal outings.

A monster. A machine. Whatever you want to call him, the rampaging number nine – who also boasts 15 goals in 26 senior games for his country – is simply devastating right now in front of goal, with it no surprise that Amorim might well be keen on a reunion.

What Gyokeres will need is quality service if he is potentially flourish at the Theatre of Dreams, with Amad – as well as Fernandes – potentially set to prove key in that regard, considering he has averaged 1.8 key passes per game in the league this season, while chalking up six assists, as per Sofascore.

Equally, the one-time Sunderland loanee also has that knack of driving at a defence in order to create space for his teammates, something which could certainly benefit Gyokeres, as he ranks in the top 9% among his European peers for progressive carries per 90.

That desire to make things happen in the final third also ensures that Amad ranks in the top 18% for touches in the opposition penalty box, again ensuring opportunities should arise for those alongside him.

A player who can press from the front with lightning speed, as indicated with his goal against Spurs after charging down Fraser Forster, Amad is simply a player who causes havoc. Someone who sucks defenders toward him.

In truth, having scored just 39 league goals in 2024/25, the Red Devils are crying out for similar talents who can win games on their own. Judging by Gyokeres’ heroics in Lisbon, he certainly fits the bill…

Newcastle leading race to sign "unplayable" £50m ace; exit is now accepted

As PIF get ready to truly flex their financial muscles for the first time since their arrival, Newcastle United are now reportedly in pole position to sign another attacking addition after Antonio Cordero.

Newcastle set to sign Cordero

Already getting what could be a busy summer of business underway, Newcastle are now reportedly set to complete the signing of Cordero from Malaga – fending off interest from both Barcelona and Real Madrid. The talented young winger chose to complete a move to St James’ Park over the two Spanish giants, highlighting just how far the Magpies have come in recent years.

They’re not done there, however, with reports coming thick and fast over further potential reinforcements in the coming months which includes links surrounding Luis Henrique and Facundo Medina.

The former would be a particularly interesting signing after the season that he’s had at Marseille. Whilst Rayan Cherki has stolen the spotlight at times, Henrique has quietly gone about his business and scored nine goals on top of his eight assists in all competitions.

What Newcastle are now doing in busy race to sign 7-goal gem after Cordero

He’s a future star…

Seemingly doing enough to earn a place on Newcastle’s radar, the Brazilian is certainly one to watch in the coming months. Attack certainly looks to be the focus for those at St James’ Park this summer, given that they’re already set to sign Cordero and links are already emerging with the likes of Henrique.

It’s a focus which has also seen Newcastle turn their attention towards a Premier League rival too, and one who would offer Eddie Howe an instant upgrade within his frontline.

Newcastle leading race to sign Mbuemo

According to Graeme Bailey for The Boot Room, Newcastle are now in pole position to sign Bryan Mbeumo this summer in a deal worth as much as £50m. The Bees have reportedly accepted the winger’s inevitable exit with a number of sides now lining up to secure what would be one of the most impressive Premier League signings of the summer.

Speaking to The Boot Room, Bailey revealed: “There’s a quiet acceptance at Brentford that he’s the next one out. Do they let Wissa and Mbeumo out? It’s possible this summer.

“I think Brentford have stagnated a bit, to say they’ve had a disappointing season would be a little bit harsh, but they have plateaued and I do expect Mbeumo to go this summer.

Bryan Mbeumo celebrates for Brentford

“There’s an awful lot of interest in him; are Newcastle furthest ahead in that interest? I think there’s a case they are at this point, but we know Arsenal have looked at him, and I think for Liverpool, if Salah had left, Mbeumo would have been an option there.”

Dubbed “unplayable” by Brentford boss Thomas Frank in December, the interest in Mbeumo should come as no surprise and he’s someone that Newcastle should be going all out for in the coming months.
