India's first ODI hat-trick since 1991

Stats highlights from the second ODI at Eden Gardens between India and Australia

Bharath Seervi21-Sep-20173 – India bowlers to claim hat-tricks in ODIs. The first to achieve this was Chetan Sharma against New Zealand in Nagpur in the 1987 World Cup. The second and third have both come at the Eden Gardens – Kapil Dev against Sri Lanka in 1991 and Kuldeep Yadav against Australia. Overall, Kuldeep registered the 44th hat-trick in ODIs.2 – Wristspinners to achieve the hat-trick in ODIs. Both have come this year within 15 matches – Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasaranga against Zimbabwe in Galle in July and Kuldeep. No wristspinner achieved it in first 45 years of ODI cricket in 3898 games.1 – Kuldeep is the first player to take hat-trick in Under-19 youth ODIs as well as ODIs. Kuldeep took a hat-trick against Scotland in the Under-19 World Cup in 2014 in Dubai.7 – Hat-tricks against Australia in ODIs, including Kuldeep’s. The others to do so are: Jalal-ud-din in 1982 (the first hat-trick in ODI history), Wasim Akram in 1990, Jerome Taylor in 2006, Shane Bond in 2007, Lasith Malinga in 2011 and Steven Finn in 2015. 5 – India players to take a hat-trick in International cricket. Apart from Chetan, Kapil and Kuldeep in ODIs, Harbhajan Singh and Irfan Pathan have done it in Tests. Three of those have come at Eden Gardens: Kapil, Harbhajan and Kuldeep.

2021 Fantasy Baseball: Shortstops ADP Analysis – Elite Talent Runs Deep

Three of the top 10 hitters ranked by SIscore came from shortstop last season. Trea Turner (5.09) led the way after hitting .335 with 46 runs, 12 home runs, 41 RBI, and 12 steals over 233 at-bats. Fernando Tatis (4.71 – .277/50/17/45/11) finished second in the final hitter rankings in 2020, followed by Trevor Story (3.75 – .289/41/11/28/15). The lack of steals by Corey Seager (.307 with 38 runs, 15 home runs, 41 RBI, and one stolen base) pushed his 20th to SIscore (2.10).

In 2019, eight players hit 30 home runs or more at shortstop. The best player was Trevor Story (.294 with 111 runs, 35 home runs, 85 RBI, and 23 steals) by SIscore (7.75). Alex Bregman (.296 with 122 runs, 41 home runs, 112 RBI, and five steals) ranked 2nd at short and 3rd at third base.

Seven players scored over 100 runs, and two players delivered over 100 RBI.

In 2018, four shortstops had 100 runs or more, and five players drove in over 100 runs. Five batters had over 30 home runs.

Here’s a grid showing the final stats for 2019 for the top 12 players at each position and their value ranked by SIscore (I didn’t use 2020 stats due to a small sample size):

In 2019, the average of the top 12 shortstops hit .293 with 91 runs, 23 home runs, 75 RBI, and 20 stolen bases over 550 at-bats. The shortstop position ranked fifth in overall hitter value.

For comparison, here are the projections (3/15) for the top 12 shortstops at Sports Illustrated ranked by SIscore:

The stats highlighted by the yellow line show the average projections (.284 with 96 runs, 28 home runs, 86 RBI, and 28 steals over 582 at-bats) for the top 12 shortstops in 2021.

Shortstops Nos. 1 to 12

Here’s a look at the top 12 shortstops by 2021 NFBC ADP (From March 8th through March 15th):

By the end of the second round of 15-team drafts in the high-stakes market, seven shortstops could be drafted. The position has upside opportunities over the first 75 draft picks.

Fernando Tatis Jr. signed a massive contract with the Padres in 2021, and he’ll be a top-three pick in many fantasy leagues. His approach improved last year, which may lead to his fifth tool becoming an asset. With a full season of at-bats, 40 home runs and 40 steals are well within reach. I prefer him over Ronald Acuna in drafts due to the edge in stolen bases from a middle infield position.

If Trea Turner decided to run more and push his stolen base total closer to 60, he would become the most valuable fantasy hitter. A team build is so much easier with a plus-speed player. Turner may very well hit third in the batting order, setting up the most RBI of his career. He has plenty of power, with the foundation swing to hit over .300.

Fantasy owners should have no complaints about landing Trevor Story at the backend of the first round. He lost his support in the lineup, which will hurt his ability to score runs. Story has been a top 10 fantasy hitter by SIscore over the last three years. He’s trending toward a 30/30 player with three straight seasons of help in batting average.

Francisco Lindor brings a balanced skill set while offering more value in home runs than stolen bases. Even with a favorable approach, his ceiling in batting average seems lower than the top-tier shortstops. He looks like a get-in-and-get-out pick in the second of fantasy drafts, and the Mets have talent behind him in the batting order.

The bet on the come at shortstop for the second straight season is Bo Bichette. The Blue Jays improved their starting lineup, which will be a big win for Bichette if he plays the entire year. His batting average projects to an impactful asset while owning a minimum of a 20/20 skill set. I trust his value in home runs more than his floor in stolen bases.

The love/hate fantasy player in the second round is Adalberto Mondesi. His high strikeout rate invites batting average risk, but most don’t see that he hits close to .380 when Mondesi puts the ball in play. He is a difference-maker in steals while having close a mid-teen floor in power. If his approach improves, Mondesi becomes more valuable.

My 2020 SI breakout hitter was Corey Seager. He’ll be found in the third round in 15-team high-stakes market. Seager checks the four-category stud bucket while playing in the highest-scoring lineup in the National League.

Gleyber Torres was a bust last year. Even so, he looks ready to come back with a vengeance in 2021. Torres should be the go-to shortstop for a fantasy owner who missed the top options over the first four rounds in drafts. The Yankees have an explosive power lineup, and he will be in the middle of all the action. Despite his failure last year, his approach did improve, pointing to a chance at a .290/100/30/100/10 season.

Shortstops Nos. 13 to 24

The top shortstop pool runs about 13 to 15 players deep this year.

Marcus Semien has a wide range of opinions on his value as a fantasy owners surf through the second stage of their team building. He should hit near the top of Toronto’s batting order while gaining a bump in offensive players around him in the batting order. The Blue Jays will play some games in a hitter’s park, which will be a win for his production.

To be or not to be is the question with Carlos Correa. He enters his seventh season with the Astros with his eyes set on free agency. His bats looked explosive over his first four months in the majors at age 20 in 2015, but Correa hasn’t played in more than 110 games in any of his previous four years. At age 26, he doesn’t have a year with over 25 home runs or 100 RBI. Despite his shortfalls, Correa does have impact upside. I expect him to have the best season of his career while being free on draft day.

In the early draft season, Andres Gimenez was drafted as though he already won Cleveland's starting shortstop job. In March, their feelings were confirmed with Amed Rosario being pushed into a utility/outfield role. Gimenez offers plenty of stolen base upside, but he needs to improve as a base runner. His power is trailing while expecting to hit lower in the batting order. I view him as overpriced on his current ADP (139).

Tommy Edman offers a mid-level combination of power and speed. The Cardinals will hit him at the top of their lineup, creating plenty of chances to score runs. His batting average should be positive while expecting more speed than power.

Jonathan Villar has a ground ball swing, which restricts his output in home runs. He doesn’t have a clear path to a starting job without an injury. His best value comes in stolen bases, inviting a buy-and-hold situation in deep leagues.

The last out for power at shortstop comes from Paul DeJong. His major league resume suggests batting average risk, but I see a batter with a chance to hit closer to .270 with some sneaky speed on his resume. The Cardinals may let him bat clean up at times this season.

Ha-Seong Kim played well in Korea, but I expect him to struggle early in his major league career. He wants to pull the ball for home runs, which will lead to pitchers working him on the outer half of the plate until he proves he can make hard contact. The Padres shouldn’t give him a full-time job earlier in the season.

'What a player he is' – Show-stealer Malik Tillman, Mauricio Pochettino's rotation players and winners and losers from the USMNT's Gold Cup win over Haiti

It was a good night for the U.S. as they won their Gold Cup group, but it was a great one for Tillman as he stole the show

ARLINGTON, Texas – The moment the question wrapped up, all Mauricio Pochettino could do was sigh. He was speechless, he admitted. What else could he say about Malik Tillman that the player's game didn't say for all to hear on Sunday night?

One goal in the back of the net, making it three for the tournament as he runs towards the Gold Cup Golden Boot – the first three goals of his his USMNT career. Two more were ruled out somewhat harshly, one partly of Tillman's own doing for not fighting to really claim it. In the 2-1 win over Haiti on Sunday – a game that helped the USMNT finish 3-0 in the group stage – Tillman was unplayable, much as he was in the opener against Trinidad and Tobago.

So what else could Pochettino do but smile as he watches a star playmaker take yet another leap forward?

"Oof," he began. "It's so difficult to define him because what a player he is. What a player."

Tillman was the show-stealer at AT&T Stadium, and he'll likely end this summer with that same status. He was the star, the player who continues to boost his case. But he wasn't the only one. Heading into the match, Pochettino made four changes to his starting XI – this after using the same starting lineup in each of the first two group stage games. While one, Tyler Adams, has little to prove to anyone, the other three were all fighting for more – and each took their chance.

Now, with a week until the knockout rounds, Pochettino will do what he has been focused on all summer: building. The U.S. will play Costa Rica next Sunday in Minneapolis in the quarterfinals. The best news is that he has the 23-year-old Tillman to build around. And this U.S. team will now believe they are better than the one that started this summer.

GOAL breaks down the winners and losers from AT&T Stadium.

Getty Images SportWINNER: Malik Tillman

Although Pochettino couldn't find the words to describe Tillman as a player, the stats paint the picture.

There was the goal, of course, but that alone doesn't tell the story. He led the match in dribbles (three), tackles (three) and duels won (nine). He created a chance, had four passes into the final third and drew multiple fouls. If Tillman hadn't raised his hand and admitted it, a potential second goal may not have been ruled out for handball. If he had been a half-step closer to the ball, another finish wouldn't have been ruled out for offside.

It was a complete performance from Tillman on both sides of the pitch.

"He is showing in this camp his talent and capacity because he is this type of player with the talent to show this every single game," Pochettino said. "Then, the capacity without the ball, the work ethic in the way that he is really aggressive. He will cover a lot of the pitch. He's always trying to help the team press, chasing back, and playing different positions. He can appear like a No. 10 in training, but he can be between the lines, on the left or right side, dropping in as a No. 8 or a No. 6.

"I see such a talented player, and I'm so pleased with him because he's such a lovely guy."

Tillman is no doubt the USMNT's attacking focal point heading into the quarterfinals and, with him in this sort of form, the U.S. will believe they can achieve their Gold Cup goals.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesLOSER: Matt Freese

Until Sunday, Matt Freese had done everything right in goal. He hadn't conceded in the Gold Cup, and the two he let in against Turkey in a pre-tournament friendly were far from his fault. It had been an ideal audition, one that was putting him into contention for a starting role going forward.

Then it happened.

Minutes after the U.S. went ahead on Tillman's 10th-minute goal, Freese was put under pressure receiving the ball – and his ensuing pass out went straight to Haiti's Don Deedson Louicius. He scrambled to get back, but the damage had been done. Loicius curled his shot right by Freese, making it 1-1.

"I move on very quickly from things as a goalkeeper," Freese said. "You need to be able to do that. You need to be, like they say, like a goldfish and move on quickly. Sulking and being upset with myself in the miidle of the game isn't my nature, so you have to just move on. Thankfully, we all support each other in the bad moments and in the good moments. And I think it was a fantastic showing of togetherness from the team."

Still, it was a rough mistake, one that Freese – who started all three Gold Cup matches ahead of Matt Turner – couldn't afford to make. That's the nature of goalkeeping, unfortunately: the good moments are when you keep things quiet, but the bad moments are always very, very loud.

"You don't need to say anything to him," Pochettino said. "The best way to handle a player is not telling them anything. It's not about saying to be careful or anything; it's about moving on. Remember, the most important action is the next one. If you're stuck on the last one, you're dead.

"This accident happened, and more like it will happen to players in the future. But we are so happy with him and with the quality of our keepers and the way that they all support each other."

It seems Pochettino is committed to Freese, yet we'll have to see if this mistake changes his mind. Another good performance would have left no doubt heading into the knockouts. Now, the questions are back.

Getty ImagesWINNER: Patrick Agyemang

In the first half, there was a moment in which Agyemang broke through. He was in alone on goal, just goalkeeper Johny Placide to beat, and a chance to net his second goal of the tournament. He put his shot right at Placide – and wasted his opportunity. As a striker, you can never count on another one to come.

"I'm a striker, so I want to score goals," Agyemang said. 'When you don't take your opportunities, you obviously just have to keep going, and that's what I did tonight."

Agyemang's chance at redemption came in the 78th minute, just moments after he and John Tolkin discussed the best way to connect. They agreed to try a ball over the top, and Tolkin's landed right in Agyemang's path. He took a touch, rounded Placide and slid it right into the back of the net for the game-winner. Mission accomplished.

"I just try to compose myself as much as possible," Agyemang said, "because you don't get many chances in a game. You have to take advantage of it. I just try and play with a clear mind, and once I rounded the keeper, it was just like, 'Alright, man, do your thing because this is what you do'. I don't put stress on myself. I just do what I know I can."

Agyemang is the only USMNT player to feature in all nine games this year and, with every chance wasted in this tournament – and there were a few – his stock slipped just a bit. Goals mean everything, though, and, having scored yet another one in a USMNT shirt, Agyemang has proven why should be the guy going forward this summer.

Getty Images SportLOSER: The other center-backs

The U.S. rotated players all over the field. The center-back duo, though, remained untouched, which will be tough to take for the three other central defenders in this group.

Chris Richards and Tim Ream retained their places in the starting XI, having now started each of the three Gold Cup games. Mark McKenzie, Miles Robinson and Walker Zimmerman watched on, having now played a combined 22 minutes in garbage time the three matches.

It's hard to see them getting much of a look going forward. With a week off until the knockouts, the U.S. will head into the quarterfinals fresh. Barring an injury, Richards and Ream are likely starting again, which means McKenzie, Robinson and Zimmerman are unlikely to get an opportunity to boost their stock.

All three are on the fringes, having been unable to convince Pochettino to give them a look.

Man Utd must axe Hojlund & Garnacho to unleash £375k-p/w trio in new attack

As Manchester United prepare to take on Newcastle United at St James’ Park this afternoon, it could be argued that the trip to Tyneside is merely an unwanted obstacle for Ruben Amorim’s side, with all eyes on next week’s Europa League tie with Lyon.

The Red Devils certainly won’t throw in the towel on the domestic front, yet left residing in the bottom half of the Premier League table, there truly is little to play for in the top-flight – other than pride, of course.

That scenario should ensure that the Portuguese coach is ready to ring the changes for today’s encounter, albeit with there an argument to be made that alterations need to be made regardless.

Indeed, the Daily Mail’s Chris Wheeler has already reported that Andre Onana could be dropped following his midweek blunders, while Rasmus Hojlund could be in the firing line after another limp outing which saw him register just 11 touches on Thursday night.

Alongside the goal-shy Dane, Alejandro Garnacho is another perhaps in need of a rest as his woes continued in front of goal away in Lyon, with the 20-year-old arguably outclassed by young Rayan Cherki for the hosts.

Alejandro Garnacho

As such, it might be time for Amorim to trial a fresh new attacking lineup, considering the return of a number of high-profile talents.

Man Utd team news for Newcastle

As Amorim revealed in his pre-match press conference on Friday, the 40-year-old should have a similar squad available to the one that made the trip to France earlier this week, with squad depth gradually beginning to improve in the Old Trafford ranks.

Indeed, that latest outing saw Kobbie Mainoo finally make his return to action off the bench, with compatriot Mason Mount also stepping up his return to fitness after now featuring as a substitute in each of United’s last three games in all competitions.

Elsewhere, fellow England star, Luke Shaw, has also been back in contention of late, albeit with the versatile defender still waiting to make his first appearance since early December. A first start, meanwhile, could be on the cards for the first time since February 2024.

Chido Obi could also be in the mix again, with the teenage striker ineligible to feature in Europe, albeit with Toby Collyer and Mathijjs de Ligt likely to be absent once again, having joined the likes of Amad Diallo, Ayden Heaven and Jonny Evans on the treatment table.

Thankfully, however, there does not appear to be any fresh injury blows, with Lisandro Martinez – who is likely to be out for much of 2025 after rupturing his ACL – seemingly the only long-term absentee at the Theatre of Dreams.

Chalkboard

That growing list of options should ensure that Amorim now has the chance to shuffle his pack against the Magpies, with both Garnacho and Hojlund among those who could make way.

How Man Utd's attack could look against Newcastle

There could be worse ideas than to drop Garnacho and Hojlund back to the bench, thus taking the pair out of the firing line and allowing them the chance to potentially make an impact as a substitute late on.

As Thursday’s 2-2 draw showcased, the Red Devils do now have the luxury of increased alternatives in the attacking ranks, with the introduction of Joshua Zirkzee on the hour mark proving particularly fruitful.

While the Dutchman may not be the out-and-out striker that United are craving, his late header did showcase his growing impact in a United shirt, having now scored on the road against both Real Sociedad and Lyon.

With Hojlund toiling, Zirkzee may have to lead the line from the off this time around, thus marking a real full circle moment, considering he was jeered off against today’s opponents just a matter of months ago.

The 23-year-old could be joined in the front line by the aforementioned Mount, with the former Chelsea man having looked lively during his late cameo in midweek, emphasising just why Amorim has hailed him as a “proper footballer”.

Manchester United's Mason Mount and Joshua Zirkzee (not pictured) are substituted on to replace RasmusHojlundand Manuel Ugarte

Mount, 26, has been among the few who the former Sporting CP boss has repeatedly singled out for praise during his brief tenure thus far, although now is the time for the Englishman to walk the walk.

With the £55m man joining Zirkzee in the starting lineup, the final number ten berth could be taken up by the returning Mainoo, with the 19-year-old playing his part in the second goal in France, as it was his brave header which found Bruno Fernandes.

Kobbie Mainoo

The FA Cup final hero has endured a rocky season due to injury and the failure to nail down his best position in the 3-4-3, although it does appear he could earn a regular role for himself as part of the front three, having scored and assisted in that berth against FCSB back in January.

As Amorim has stated, the Red Devils “need to be careful” with the teenager amid his injury woes, although it would be a waste not to utilise a player of his talents, with the United boss stating that Mainoo is “really good near the opponent’s box”.

With Fernandes potentially replacing Manuel Ugarte by dropping into a deep-lying berth, the opening is there for the academy graduate to take his chance as one of the two number tens.

There could be a lack of pace if Amorim does opt to deploy Mainoo alongside Mount and Zirkzee, although that £375k-per-week trio could make up an exciting, new-look forward line at St James’ Park.

Diaz upgrade: Liverpool among frontrunners to sign £60m "superstar"

A fortress is made impregnable not through the initial conquering but the success in defending the territory claimed over so many years, and that means Liverpool will need to strengthen their ranks this summer.

It’s clear at this point that Arne Slot is going to win the Premier League in his first term in the hot seat, an incredible feat given Liverpool were effectively written off following Jurgen Klopp’s departure at the end of the 2023/24 campaign.

But Slot will want an abiding position at the forefront of English and indeed European football, and Liverpool’s frontline has looked a little out of kilter over recent months.

Liverpool's DarwinNunezand Diogo Jota look dejected after the match

It’s clear that FSG are going to authorise one or two exciting summer bids.

Liverpool targeting new forwards

Mohamed Salah has meted out punishment on near every opponent he has faced this season, but Liverpool need more up front, with The Athletic among those to report Red interest in Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak.

Newcastle United's AlexanderIsakcelebrates scoring their second goal

However, number nine isn’t the only spot on the club’s radar.

As per Caught Offside, Liverpool and Arsenal are interested in signing Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze; further suitors are in the running but the Premier League’s top two share the lead here as well.

Eze’s strong and potent performances under Oliver Glasner suggest he has what it takes to thrive at a top-performing club like Liverpool, who could do with such a dynamic attacker.

Last summer, the Eagles anticipated a swarm of interest in their silky star but no one came forward. Now, the ball is in their court and demands worth £60m have been put in place.

Why Liverpool want to sign Eze

Eze packs a punch. The 26-year-old has gone from strength to strength since leaving Queens Park Rangers in the Championship in 2020 and joining the Selhurst Park ranks for a £20m fee.

Eberechi Eze for Crystal Palace

Hailed as a “superstar” by data analyst Ben Mattinson, Eze has hit 12 goals and 12 assists apiece under Glasner’s wing, featuring 48 times in total.

This season alone, he’s been in fine fettle, playing a more creative role than in 2023/24 but doing so to a fine effect.

Eze’s broad skill set lends itself to multiple positions, and while he’s been fielded routinely in the middle of the park this year, he has ample experience out on the left flank.

With that in mind, Eze could be the perfect signing to upgrade on Luis Diaz, whose uncertain future at Anfield suggests a replacement will be required sooner rather than later.

While Eze hasn’t chalked up the greatest numbers in front of goal this season, his underlying data suggests that he’s outstripping Diaz across almost every department.

This is important. Diaz isn’t exactly revered for his clinical touch, instead effusively praised for his tricks and slicks, skill and will toward driving play forward and leaving defenders munching dust.

Liverpool forward Luis Diaz

To sign a player who produces such qualities but to a higher standard, more relentless in the duel, creative in his playmaking duties, active in carrying the ball, it’s an intriguing proposition, one which might just dynamise Liverpool’s already progressive attacking outfit.

Moreover, Eze’s clinical side was on full show last season, firing 11 goals home across 24 Premier League appearances, missing just five big chances in an immense display of potency.

Indeed, the Englishman halted Jurgen Klopp’s bid for a farewell league triumph after scoring at Anfield in the 1-0 win in April, with journalist Keifer MacDonald noting that the playmaker had left Trent Alexander-Arnold “furious” due to his slow walk off the field when substituted late on.

Liverpool winger Luis Diaz

Whether the Three Lions star, who scored his first international goal off the bench in a 3-0 win over Latvia last week, is bid for remains to be seen, but Eze has everything that Slot’s Liverpool need, especially if a clinical centre-forward is welcomed to the fold this summer.

In a more distinguished team like Liverpool, Eze may even find himself unlocking his full goalscoring potential. As per FBref, the £100k-per-week talent actually ranks among the top 2% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for shots taken per 90.

Having been described as a “wizard” by Arsenal’s Declan Rice in the past, Palace’s main man may just be on the move this summer. Diaz has been a fantastic servant for Liverpool over the past several years and will be duly rewarded with a Premier League winners’ medal in the coming months, but the time might be right for a change.

The Colombian has only scored one goal across his past 19 fixtures in all competitions for the Reds – albeit assisting in four of his past six top-flight games – and at 28 is heading into the penultimate year of his £55k-per-week deal with sights set on a new bumper package or change of scenery.

There have been whispers of late that Diaz could be sold this summer to fund a freshen-up. Barcelona have a long-standing admiration and the Saudi Pro League are also there, quietly lurking.

How much of a vested interest sporting director Richard Hughes has in Eze at this stage, we don’t know. However, his efforts in south London over the past few years certainly indicate a future at one of the division’s European competitors, and Liverpool will be right there, ready to pounce if the right opportunity presents itself.

Tom Prest suggested 2024 will be his breakthrough season by scoring an impeccable 85 as Hampshire edged day one of their Vitality County Championship clash with Lancashire.Former England under-19 captain Prest hinted at his first-class talents with his maiden ton towards the end of last season and opened his account this year with a high-quality knock. He was one of four half-century makers for the hosts – with Nick Gubbins, James Vince and Liam Dawson also reaching the milestone as Hampshire totted up 305 for six in front of their highest first-day-of-the-season crowd from over a decade.Nathan Lyon picked up his first two wickets for Lancashire during a mammoth 32-over day which yielded two for 97.Skipper Vince won the toss and chose to bat first, giving debutant Ali Orr an immediate chance to impress the Hampshire supporters after his winter move from Sussex. His collaboration with new opening partner Fletcha Middleton may need some work after the latter was run out in the ninth over by a George Balderson direct hit after a miscommunication.Orr departed four overs later when Tom Bailey cut him in two with a wicked in-jagger to be caught behind, but from there, Hampshire found more fluency and built partnerships in overcast conditions.Vince had come off a winter of seemingly endless white-ball cricket, taking him from Abu Dhabi to Australia, Dubai to Pakistan. He ended last season’s Championship campaign – one where he become Hampshire’s first batter to 1,000 first-class runs since 2016 – with 56 and began the new campaign in identical fettle. It was a look down and you missed it half-century, coming up in 62 balls but with hardly a shot in anger. It included a cover drive but otherwise kept the ball on a string to ease his side from danger in an 84-run stand with Gubbins, taking the score away from the worrying 26 for two.Gubbins, who had scored twin centuries on Lancashire’s previous trip to Utilita Bowl, unfurled his typically aesthetic yet steady knock to provide the foil for Vince before helping Prest lay the foundations for his innings.Australian spinner Lyon had been due to play for Hampshire in 2020 before Covid prevented him from arriving. His maiden first-class outing on what would have been his home ground saw him strike in his seventh over as Vince tamely turned to leg-slip.Lyon was given the lone front-line spinner furrow, with England left-armer Tom Hartley left out having played in the rain-affected draw against Surrey. The 36-year-old also lured Gubbins into a drive to edge behind three balls after reaching a 112-run 50 but the most intriguing passage of the day was Lyon’s battle with 21-year-old Prest. It began with a sharp chance at short-leg, which was followed by a maiden over where every ball landed on the same spot, before Prest replied with a pair of reverse sweeps. The battle would conclude with 33 runs and 34 dots in 51 balls – including the day’s only maximum on the slog sweep.Prest is one to watch this season after his maiden century in the penultimate fixture of last season, where he took down Simon Harmer in style. His 76-ball fifty oozed quality and underlined his tag but fell short of a century when he gloved a sweep to slip, three balls after Lyon had dropped a difficult chance on the dive. It ended a 93-run alliance with Dawson.Ben Brown fell soon after when Will Williams secured an edge to third slip with the second new ball but Dawson made it a quartet of fifty-makers with an unbeaten 61 – although was dropped on 51 before the close.

Worth more than Trossard & Merino: Arsenal struck gold on the new Fabregas

da cassino: After putting in what might be one of the club’s all-time great performances away to European champions Real Madrid on Wednesday night, Arsenal had the task of dispatching Ipswich Town yesterday afternoon.

da pinnacle: Given the hype before their Champions League game and the sheer jubilation that followed it, it wouldn’t have been all that surprising to see the Gunners struggle to motivate themselves for a Premier League game that ultimately now means little in the grand scheme of their season.

However, Mikel Arteta has instilled a certain philosophy in his team, and they came out flying against the Tractor Boys, coming away from Suffolk as fully deserved 4-0 winners, with the likes of Mikel Merino and Leandro Trossard seriously impressing.

Yet, as good as the two starters were and as vital as they will be for the rest of the season, one of the second-half substitutes is now worth considerably more than both and could even be the Gunners’ new Cesc Fàbregas.

Merino & Trossard's game vs Ipswich

With Thomas Partey set to miss the first leg of Arsenal’s Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain thanks to his brainless yellow card in the closing stages of last week’s win, Arteta left him out of yesterday’s starting lineup, moving Merino into midfield and starting Trossard up top, in preparation for the upcoming game.

Market Movers

Football FanCast’s Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club’s star player or biggest flop worth today?

While some were understandably worried about changing a winning formula, it would be fair to say it was a tweak that worked perfectly.

For example, the Belgian scored a goal in both halves and what made them all the more impressive was that he did so with little space to manoeuvre in the box, which might be how he has to operate next Tuesday.

We weren’t the only ones impressed with the former Brighton & Hove Albion man either, as the Standard’s Simon Collings awarded him an 8/10 match rating at full-time, writing that he ‘made his case’ to start against PSG and ‘offered more than just goals.’

Moreover, be it the confidence he’s gained from playing up top or the simple fact that he’s now had a sizable run of games in the side, the former Real Sociedad star was phenomenal and earned an 8/10 rating from Collings.

For example, his brilliant backheel allowed Gabriel Martinelli to score his 50th goal for the club, and while he didn’t get on the scoresheet himself, he was here, there and everywhere in the middle of the park, as exemplified by his statistics.

For example, in just 57 minutes of action, the “duel monster,” as dubbed by Arsenal content creator Adam Keys, amassed a combined expected goal plus assists figure of 0.48, provided one assist, took 33 touches, played one key pass, was accurate in 100% of his crosses, created one big chance, won ten duels and made six tackles.

In short, both Trossard and Merino put in stellar displays yesterday and should now be nailed-on starters for next Tuesday’s season-defining encounter.

Yet, both players are worth considerably less than one of yesterday’s substitutes, who could be the club’s next Fabregas.

The Arsenal gem worth millions more than Trossard & Merino

So, first things first, how much are Merino and Trossard worth today? Well, according to Football Transfers, the former is worth around €39.7m, which is about £34m, and the latter is valued at €31.8m, which is about £27m.

Now, while those are not insignificant valuations, they are, surprisingly so, much lower than Ethan Nwaneri’s, which is a whopping €54.6m, which comes out to about £47m, or £20m more than the Belgian and £13m more than the Spaniard.

It might seem like an absurd number for someone who’s just turned 18, but that might actually work in his favour, as the Hale Ender is already showing an ability to thrive in a title-chasing side at such a young age, scoring nine goals and providing two assists in just 33 appearances, totalling 1294 minutes.

In fact, it’s this ability to step up and perform like a seasoned professional at such a young age that makes him so similar to Fabregas.

The former captain became the youngest player to represent the team in a competitive fixture – a title now held by the Enfield-born gem – when he came off the bench against Rotherham United in a League Cup match in October 2003.

Then, over the next few years, he became a regular starter in the team, so much so that he started the club’s triumphant FA Cup final against Manchester United in 2005.

On top of breaking through in similar ways, there is a real possibility that the Gunners’ “unplayable” young star, as dubbed by Jack Wilshere, could eventually move into the position once held by the Spaniard in time, as while he’s thriving on the wing at the moment, his most played position across his junior career was attacking midfield.

Finally, like the former Barcelona star, the teenage phenomenon has already shown that nothing about top-flight football fazes him, which could be one of the characteristics that help him establish a starting role in the first team in the years to come.

Ultimately, while Merino and Trossard should and almost certainly will start against PSG, Nwaneri looks like he will be one of Arsenal’s best players for potentially the next decade or more.

Ponting on Porel: The moment I laid eyes on him, I knew he was a very special talent

The DC head coach also called Jake Fraser-McGurk one of the “standout powerplay batsmen” of IPL 2024 along with Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma

What’s clicked for Abishek Porel?

Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting has lavished praise on Abishek Porel, the left-hand batter who has sparkled in multiple roles during IPL 2024, and indicated that he will don the keeping gloves against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on Sunday in the absence of the suspended Rishabh Pant. Capitals signed Porel in 2023 as a replacement for Pant, who missed the entire season after sustaining multiple injuries in a car crash, and Ponting has predicted that the Bengal keeper-batter has “a really bright future”.Porel has scored 267 runs in ten innings this season at a strike rate of 157.98. He began the campaign batting at No. 9 against Punjab Kings, coming in as an Impact Player and smacking an unbeaten 32 off just ten balls. Since then, he has been promoted to a top-four role, and in DC’s last game against Rajasthan Royals, he opened the batting and put on 60 in just 4.2 overs with Jake Fraser-McGurk. Porel went on to score 65 off 36, his first IPL half-century, studded with seven fours and three sixes.”I’ve seen extreme growth in Abishek Porel in this IPL,” Ponting said in Bengaluru ahead of the match against RCB. “In fact, looking back to the start of last season, obviously [with] Rishabh’s accident, we needed to bring in some wicketkeepers into our squad after the auction. We tried a lot of guys, a lot of guys that played, more senior guys than Porel, but the moment that I laid eyes on him, I knew that he was a very special talent.Related

“I think, what we’ve seen in the last half a dozen games in particular, that talent’s really starting to shine through. He’s starting to work out what IPL cricket is all about. He’s had a couple of different roles as well. In the first game of the season for us, he came in as a No. 9 batsman, Impact Player, and made [32] off ten balls there, and now we see him opening the batting and he’s got better and better every game.”I’ve got huge raps on him. I think he’s a very, very good young player, obviously we’ll probably get to see him with the keeping gloves on tomorrow as well, with Rishabh not being there. And then we’ll work out, when we finalise our team, with the batting order and stuff, but I’ll be surprised if he’s not at the top of the order again, because he has played really well, and he’s someone that I think has got a really bright future.”Porel has hit 31 fours so far this season, the joint-most for DC along with Pant, even though he has scored only 267 runs to Pant’s 413. Until this IPL season, he had played just four games in the tournament – all in 2023 – scoring 33 runs at a strike rate of 106.45. He was among the retained players for DC coming into this IPL.Ricky Ponting has termed Jake Fraser-McGurk’s IPL performances ‘electrifying’•Getty Images

‘Fraser-McGurk among the standout powerplay batsmen this IPL with Head and Abhishek’

Ponting also hailed Jake Fraser-McGurk, the swashbuckling 22-year-old batter who has taken this IPL by storm, but didn’t find a place in the Australia squad for the T20 World Cup next month. Fraser-McGurk himself had said he felt he hadn’t earned a place in the final 15-member squad.Fraser-McGurk was picked by DC as a replacement player just before IPL 2024, after fast bowler Lungi Ngidi was ruled out. Fraser-McGurk has since then, in many ways, reset the T20 batting template in the powerplay, just like Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma have while batting for Sunrisers Hyderabad this season. Fraser-McGurk has scored his 309 runs while striking at 235.87 and averaging 44.14, with the help of four half-centuries. That strike rate is even better than Abhishek’s 205.64 and Head’s 201.89.”I don’t think Jake expected to get picked in the first place,” Ponting said of his absence from the T20 World Cup squad. “It was only a few weeks ago that he turned up here as a replacement player, and probably the furthest thing from his mind was actually getting a chance to be in that World Cup squad. It’s just been how electrifying he’s been in this IPL. Some of the things he’s done – I think he’s made three 20-ball fifties in this tournament, so he along with Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma have been the stand-out powerplay batsmen in this entire tournament.”I saw some quotes from him the day that the squad was announced or the day after – he wasn’t surprised that he wasn’t in the squad, he wasn’t disappointed at not being there. I’m sure he would have liked to have been in it, but I think he would have been more surprised to be named than left out. He’s focused now, like all of us, he’s making sure that we’re ready to go tomorrow. For us, it’s not about what happened yesterday, it’s about what we can do today to get better, and then make sure that we’re ready to play our best game of cricket tomorrow.”
