Earlier this season, Tottenham boss Postecoglou claimed that he always wins trophies in his second season, and the Australian proved himself right as the Lilywhites won their first trophy since 2008. Spurs were able to beat Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final at San Mames on Wednesday night via a scruffy first-half goal from Brennan Johnson.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Despite winning the Europa League, Spurs' 2024-25 season will go down as one of their worst in recent history as Postecoglou's side are set to finish 15th in the Premier League, at best. They are currently only one spot off the relegation zone with just 38 points in 37 games. Throughout the season, questions have been raised about whether Postecoglou should be sacked by Tottenham, however, it is now unlikely to happen. Additionally, the Australian has opened up that he wants to stay with the Lilywhites past this summer.

    WHAT POSTECOGLOU SAID

Speaking to the media, Postecoglou said: "I’ve had such a laser focus on winning this. Whatever happens, happens. We are still building this team, it is still very young, we need to add experience.

"My thought process has been trying to build a team that can be successful for a long time, but I am manager, it is not in my hands but it doesn’t affect me, if it did you would have seen it.

"I want to stay, I haven’t completed a job yet, but the moment I accepted the role I had one thing in my head and that was to win something, I want to build on it."

  • WHAT NEXT FOR POSTECOGLOU?

Tottenham could still avoid the disappointing label of the last-placed non-relegated side this season in the Premier League if they manage to beat Brighton in their last game of the campaign on May 25. However, it will also depend on Manchester United, West Ham or Wolves not winning their final games.

Jaiswal's blistering century caps India's day of dominance

Earlier in the day, India’s bowling attack roared back to bowl out England for 319 despite Ben Duckett’s 153

Sidharth Monga17-Feb-2024″Even when it was 200 for 2, guys were pretty relaxed. You know, in a session, there is four or five that could come your way.”R Ashwin, the man who said those words, might have pulled out of the Test overnight for personal reasons, but the Indian attack was good enough to vindicate him with eight wickets in a session and a half as India roared back from the shock of a sensational Ben Duckett hundred on day two. Kuldeep Yadav softened England up with an excellent spell that virtually ran through the first session, and Mohammed Siraj capitalised on it in the second session as India took the last eight wickets for just 95 runs. With a first-innings lead of 126 secured, India’s batters finally got down to scoring the runs that should be scored off an inexperienced and inaccurate attack. Riding on a sparkling century from Yashasvi Jaiswal, India ended the day with a lead of 322, which is 84 more than what they still had in the bank at the start of the day. That is probably why Ashwin was confident of a comeback on a pitch that was likely to only get worse for batting.Related

Five of the 12 wickets on the first two days had fallen in the first hour. It was pertinent that India cash in on that movement from the moisture early in the morning. In Ashwin’s absence, they began with Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep. Immediately, it was apparent there was a little more available than had been in the second half of day two, which is when Duckett had led England to 207 for 2 in 35 overs.Bazball gives, but Bazball takes as well. Joe Root, more overs under his belt than runs in this series, tried the reverse scoop in Bumrah’s third over of the day, but ended up hitting it to second slip for a sharp catch for Jaiswal. To be fair to Root, until then he had scored 64 with that shot in just 23 balls for one dismissal. What followed is a true test of the dressing room’s disregard for results, the biggest building block of Bazball.Kuldeep Yadav sent back Ben Duckett for 153•Getty Images

In the early exchanges, Duckett had reminded India of the problem they had. Kuldeep had a deep square leg for the sweep, and a deep cover for the reverse sweep, but he swept from in front of the stumps and deliberately in front of square. And when India sent another man back, he picked an easy single.Kuldeep’s response was to go wider and look for more overspin. That kept Duckett quiet, and then drew an edge on the reverse sweep, his first boundary off an edge. Eventually, after reaching 150, he ended up hitting a short, wide ball straight to cover. It just stopped a touch and turned more than expected. Everything was coming together for India: the pitch was misbehaving just that little bit more, a traditionally high-risk shot had gone straight to hand, and Kuldeep was bowling beautifully.Kuldeep was in great rhythm, giving the ball proper rip, creating deception both in the air and off the surface. Before he got Duckett in what might look on the surface a soft manner, he had beaten Jonny Bairstow in the air, and then ripped the ball in to trap him for his eighth duck against India, the most by any batter.Kuldeep bowled through the session bar one over for day-three figures of 12-1-35-2. It might be just two wickets, but it set the foundation for India conceding just 83 in 26 overs in the session. Finally India had some control over the free-scoring England batters.Post lunch, Ben Stokes tried to take a few risks, and for once they didn’t all come off. Ravindra Jadeja, bowling around the wicket to the left-hand batter, an angle that has raised a few eyebrows in the series, got him on the slog sweep thanks to that angle. The ball didn’t turn, and Stokes holed out. Something similar happened with Tom Hartley, who charged him but was beaten by the lack of turn and stumped to give Dhruv Jurel his first Test victim.Joe Root handed a catch to second slip off a reverse scoop•Associated Press

At the other end, Siraj charged in, reversed the ball, and ran through the lower order. Ben Foakes got one that stopped in the surface, and then pinged all the way to mid-on for a catch. Rehan Ahmed got a superb yorker that he even cue-ended, but couldn’t save his off stump. Full, reversing, off-stump-seeking Siraj was too good for James Anderson. For once, India had ended an innings in just 85 false responses, a bit of luck they were due after the hard work in the first four innings of the series. For the fifth time in the series, the young batting group was presented with an opportunity to bat England out of a match. India’s innings began right at the mid-point of the middle day of the middle Test of the series; by the end of the day it seemed the series had turned a corner. Finally it looked like a four-man attack whose one spinner debuted this series. Their best spinner has been Root, who got them their first wicket: Rohit Sharma lbw to a ball too full.Jaiswal and Shubman Gill then began slowly, absorbed the best England had to offer, and got to 75 for 1 in 26 overs. Jaiswal looked at ease, Gill seemed to have started back and across to try to cover the off stump better. In the 27th over, floodgates opened. On 35 off 73 at this moment, Jaiswal flicked a switch, hooked Anderson, then pulled him dismissively in front of square, and then lofted Hartley for two sixes down the ground. Suddenly he was 61 off 81.Then Jaiswal biffed Ahmed down the ground before sweeping Root for his 18th six in just seven Tests. The cherry on the top was his two reverse-swept boundaries in three balls off Ahmed, played the way England have been playing: switch the stance but not the grip. This is just after head coach Rahul Dravid might have sent him a quiet instruction to be ruthless. He brought up his third Test hundred with a cut in front of square off Mark Wood, bowling with a square field for the short ball.Almost a silent partner, Gill reminded everyone he was around when he pulled Mark Wood for a six to bring up his fifty off 98 balls. He scored just 57 in the 155-run stand, which came to a pause with back pain forcing Jaiswal to retire hurt, probably a precaution keeping next week’s Test in Ranchi in mind.

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. – Mauricio Pochettino denied any interest in succeeding the fired Ange Postecoglou as Tottenham manager, saying after the USMNT's 2-1 loss to Turkey on Saturday that "Today it's not realistic. Look at where I am, where we are, and I think is the answer is so clear."

Several media outlets have speculated that Pochettino is on Tottenham's radar, with the BBC reporting that the Spurs have interest in bringing back the U.S. boss, while also considering Brentford’s Thomas Frank and Fulham's Marco Silva.

The BBC also reported that it would be financially challenging to hire Pochettino, given the compensation required to break his current contract with U.S. Soccer.

When asked about his interest in a return to Tottenham, Pochettino noted that he had frequently been linked with the Spurs job since he was controversially let go in 2019.

"Since I left in 2019, for the position of the manager or the head coach, my name has been appearing on every list!" he said on Saturday. "If you are seeing the rumors I’ve seen, there are 100 coaches on their list! Don't be worried about that. If something happened, you will see, but we cannot talk about this type of thing."

Pochettino spent five years in charge at Spurs, leading the club to the 2019 Champions League final and consistently securing top-four league finishes, including a second-place finish in 2017. Since leaving north London, Pochettino has managed high-profile clubs such as Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea.

The Argentine joined the USMNT last September, replacing the fired Gregg Berhalter, and is currently mired in a three-game losing streak, including the loss against Turkey.

Patterson powers Strikers past Renegades and to the top of the table

The 96-run stand between Jess Duffin and Harmanpreet Kaur went in vain for Renegades, who remain stuck at the bottom of the pile

Tristan Lavalette08-Nov-2023Late hitting from Bridget Patterson powered defending champions Adelaide Strikers past struggling Melbourne Renegades at Karen Rolton Oval in their WBBL fixture on Wednesday.Despite a gulf between the teams on the ladder, Strikers were made to work and the target of 149 was not easy on a tricky surface. But Patterson was superb at the death, finishing unbeaten on 36 from 26 balls as Strikers claimed victory with an over to spare.Renegades’ total had been built around a 96-run fourth-wicket partnership between Harmanpreet Kaur and Jess Duffin after they had slumped at 41 for 3.After that, Renegades needed early wickets under lights, but were thwarted by aggressive opener Katie Mack in the powerplay. She used her feet to great effect against offspinner Hayley Mathews and capitalised on wayward short bowling from 16-year-old quick Sara Kennedy.Bowling at speeds close to 120kph, Kennedy has impressed in her debut season but struggled for rhythm, and conceded 15 runs in the third over amid Mack’s flier.Mack had the boundary in her sights on almost every delivery before holing out to Matthews after scoring 24.Captain Tahlia McGrath became the second Strikers batter to pass 2000 WBBL runs and was untroubled along with Laura Wolvaardt. They were in cruise control at the halfway mark before both fell after the drinks break to seamer Georgia Prestwidge.Danielle Gibson, the hero in their thrilling chase against Perth Scorchers, was set to again lead Strikers over the line before falling to Kennedy with 26 runs still needed. But Patterson calmly stepped up as Strikers moved back to the top of the ladder.Jess Duffin’s half-century helped Melbourne Renegades get to a competitive total•Getty ImagesRenegades’ finals hopes, however, appear forlorn after losing their sixth straight game.Propping the ladder, Renegades were major underdogs but their only victory of the season had been against Strikers, who they had routed for 86 at the Junction Oval. After electing to bat on a lively surface, Renegades desperately needed Matthews to find form after she had scored just 99 runs from seven innings. She didn’t face up immediately with Tammy Beaumont smashing a first-ball boundary from offspinner Georgia Adams and added another lusty blow three balls later. But on the last ball of the over, when she finally went on strike, Matthews was cramped for room attempting a cut shot to be caught behind for a golden duck. It was the second time this season Matthews had fallen to Adams and the fourth time she has failed to reach double-figures.Renegades’ top-order woes continued when a frustrated Courtney Webb was stumped after being lured out of her crease by a looping delivery from legspinner Amanda-Jade Wellington that spun sharply off the pitch.Beaumont, who had been reprieved on 12 when legspinner Anesu Mushangwe dropped a tough return catch, was bowled by Gibson as Renegades stared down the barrel. In a familiar tale, the pressure was on Harmanpreet, who again dug Renegades out of trouble. She targeted Wellington down the ground and also played with trademark inventiveness, including several well-executed scoops, as she mastered the two-paced surface.Duffin provided strong support and after a slow start she overtook Harmanpreet with a slew of belligerent strokes. Both batters fell at the death with Harmanpreet brilliantly caught by McGrath low to her left at cover.Mushangwe deservedly picked up the wicket of Duffin to finish with 1 for 18 off four overs in a disciplined performance that the Renegades bowlers were unable to replicate later in the night.

Imran Khan sentenced to ten years in prison by Pakistan court

Former Pakistan captain’s lawyers set to appeal the sentence at the High Court

Imran Khan, the former Pakistan captain and Prime Minister, has been sentenced to ten years in prison by a special court in Pakistan. He stands accused of not returning a diplomatic document after he was removed from the office of Prime Minister in 2022. He has been in prison since August 2023 on a separate charge, and though that sentence was suspended, he was still not released.Imran was charged under the Official Secrets Act, a British era law, with a special court convened to hear his case, as well as that of Shah Mahmood Qureshi, a senior figure in Imran’s political party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). Qureshi also received a ten-year sentence. The PTI’s official Twitter account issued a statement, calling the ruling “a sham trial and a complete mockery and disregard of law”.Imran has consistently alleged that the no-confidence vote to remove him from power was undertaken at the behest of the United States of America, and that the document in question contained proof of American diplomatic pressure to get rid of him. This allegation gained further momentum when the US news organisation published an article after purportedly gaining access to the classified document. The article said the US State Department threatened Pakistani isolation if Imran wasn’t removed, and that if he was indeed removed, “all would be forgiven”.In Pakistan, public discussion of that classified document, known as a cypher, has led to the possibility of being charged with a violation of the Official Secrets Act. The charges of both Imran and Qureshi have had to do with discussing the contents of the document in public. This latest flashpoint comes just nine days before Pakistan goes to the polls. Opinion polling in the lead-up to the elections has been non-existent, but the most recent independent polls have shown Imran to be the most popular politician in the country. When he was arrested by paramilitary security forces in May 2023, violent uprisings took place throughout the country that led to an internet blackout that lasted several days; tens of thousands of his political supporters were also arrested. The party that Imran had led to power in the 2018 elections has been barred from contesting these elections, with Imran personally banned from running for any political office for five years.Imran and Queshi’s lawyers said they would appeal this sentence in the High Court.

Kohli on equalling Tendulkar's record of 49 ODI hundreds: 'It's stuff of dreams'

He got to the milestone on his 35th birthday in India’s World Cup match against South Africa at Eden Gardens

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Nov-20231:29

‘Ridiculous!’ – Anil Kumble marvels at Virat Kohli’s ODI numbers

Virat Kohli has equalled Sachin Tendulkar’s world record of 49 ODI hundreds, getting to the landmark on his 35th birthday in India’s World Cup match against South Africa in Kolkata.”Every opportunity to play for India is big one for me. To be able to do that on my birthday, in front of the whole crowd, it’s stuff of dreams, something that as a child you wish had happened,” Kohli said after his record-equalling innings. “I am very grateful to God that I have been blessed with these kinds of moments, so much love from the fans as well and just continue to help the team in any way possible.”Kohli reached the record-equalling hundred off 119 balls, getting to the milestone in the 49th over of India’s innings by punching Kagiso Rabada to cover for a single in front of a near-capacity crowd at Eden Gardens. While Tendulkar scored his 49th century in his 451st ODI innings, Kohli got there in just his 277th innings in his 289th match. He finished unbeaten on 101 off 121 balls, having steered India to a total of 326.

Kohli began his innings in the sixth over and then India lost Shubman Gill in the 11th, with the score then 93 for 2. “It was a tricky wicket to bat on,” Kohli said. “We got a great start through Rohit [Sharma] and Shubman, and then when I got in, my job was to keep that momentum going, but as soon as the ten overs got over, the ball started gripping and the wicket started slowing down as the ball got older.”Our roles are different – me and Shreyas [Iyer], we wanted to string in a partnership and to be honest, as soon as we lost Shubman and Rohit within ten overs, my role was to bat deep and bat till the end because that’s what I have done over the years and that’s what the communication from the team was well; I bat and guys bat around me and then Shreyas started hitting a few. So, we were not thinking that we would get 327 [326] but that’s what happens when you dig deep and you take the game into the last few overs then you can get a few more than you thought.”He and Iyer kept India’s momentum going with a third-wicket stand of 134 off 158 balls. “We had a lot of practice sessions before we went to the Asia Cup. I and Shreyas invariably batted together, because No. 3 and 4, against spinners. And I spoke to him, ‘This is the partnership that has to take centre stage through the middle overs’. So both of us are pretty comfortable rotating the strike against spinners. Whatever loose balls he got, he put them away, credit to him,” Kolhi said. “As I said, when you lose two wickets and don’t have Hardik [Pandya] in your team, you need to bat deep and make sure that you get to a stage where the opposition feels like we have to restrict them, rather than thinking we are one wicket away from 30 runs lesser than what we had to chase. He batted beautifully according to the situation and strike rotation was the key.”Getty ImagesKohli now has two hundreds in the 2023 World Cup to go with four half-centuries in eight league games so far. He is the second highest run-scorer in the tournament behind South Africa’s Quinton de Kock, his 543 runs coming at an average of 108.60 and strike rate of 88.29. It is the first time he has scored more than 500 runs in an ODI World Cup.Kohli’s hundred continues a prolific year for him in the ODI format. He has more than 1000 runs with five centuries in 2023, at an average of 72.18 and strike rate of 99.82. It is the eighth time he has scored more than 1000 ODI runs in a year, surpassing Tendulkar’s record of seven. With seven wins in seven games, India were the first team to qualify for the World Cup semi-finals, ahead of this top-of-the-table clash with South Africa.

£28m Arsenal star just proved he's becoming their modern-day Giroud

da pinup bet: Ladies and gentlemen, Bukayo Saka is back. Wow, what a sight that was. Three months Arsenal fans have had to stand by to watch him kick a ball again and boy was it worth the wait.

da bet vitoria: The club’s heralded number 7 hasn’t been seen since sustaining a hamstring injury against Crystal Palace on 21st December and since then, the Gunners’ title challenge has been extinguished swiftly.

Yet, there is still hope for Arsenal’s season. Despite their 2-1 win over Fulham on Tuesday evening, a game Saka scored in, they are unlikely to win the Premier League title.

However, the winger’s return is timely with Real Madrid to look forward to in just under a week’s time in the Champions League.

For once, Mikel Arteta has a bunch of positives to swoon over. That hasn’t been said too often about the club’s season now has it?

The biggest positives from Arsenal's win over Fulham

Oh Saka, you little beauty. It’s been a hellish 12 week period for Arsenal since the Englishman took to the field but he is back and back with a bang.

He had only been on the field for seven minutes before he found the net. It wasn’t in classic Saka fashion but it raised the roof off the Emirates Stadium nonetheless.

Mikel Merino moved into the left channel and swung in a ball that was guided towards Saka with remarkable skill and audacity by Gabriel Martinelli.

The returning hero was just inches out from goal and couldn’t miss, heading the ball past former Gunner Bernd Leno.

Saka wasn’t the only positive either, far from it. The aforementioned Merino and Martinelli were both in top form, the former scoring the game’s opening goal and the latter unfortunate not to leave proceedings with a goal to his name as well.

The Brazilian was a constant livewire, not just providing the assist for Saka’s goal, a game-winning strike, but he also found the back of the net himself, albeit it was ruled out for offside.

Nonetheless, it was phenomenal to see the winger back at top speed. He was a constant nuisance throughout, terrorising Fulham’s Timothy Castagne with a performance that was remeniscent of 2022/23 Martinelli.

He left the field having had three shots, completed two dribbles and produced five key passes.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Beyond Saka’s incredible return, the biggest positive that aside was perhaps the performance of the club’s makeshift centre-forward.

Arsenal have found their modern-day Olivier Giroud

When Gabriel Jesus went down with an injury during Arsenal’s FA Cup exit at the hands of Manchester United, there was a collective panic. But…it was alright…they were going to strengthen in the January transfer window. Famous last words and all that.

Arsenal did not strengthen. Their reward? A season-ending injury for Kai Havertz too.

Arsenal's KaiHavertzwith manager MikelArtetaafter being substituted

Since then, Arteta has preferred to field the aforementioned Merino as his out and out centre-forward and it’s had mixed success.

Truth be told, the £28m summer arrival has done an admiral job. He’s scored five goals in eight games as a striker. Had he started the campaign as the club’s number 9, he’d on for a 23-goal season. Not bad indeed.

Unlike many others during the club’s injury-hit season, he’s stepped up big time and in the words of Arsenal writer Oli Price Bates, is “not getting enough credit for his performances.”

Another game came and went against Fulham where the Spaniard made quite the impression. His goal was a scruffy finish, finding the net via a deflection but it was a crucial goal all the same.

It’s not the first time the former Real Sociedad man has come up trumps, notably scoring that brace off the bench in the 2-0 win over Leicester City.

Since then, he’s been much-maligned, rather in the same way as a certain Olivier Giroud. Now, there are clear differences between the two. Giroud was a direct centre-forward first and foremost.

However, there are specific similarities in the way the two play the game. The Frenchman scored some beautiful goals but he always had quite an awkward play style, a technique that looked rather awkward. At the same time, his left peg was certainly pretty special.

Those traits can certainly be applied to Merino too. He’s not the most technically elegant – he’s a bit scruffy and awkward like Giroud. He’s also pretty underappreciated and underrated. That’s not to mention their ability to act as target men and link play too.

Against Fulham, the Spain international certainly showcased that. He scored the opening goal and went on to complete 88% of his passes and make a key pass too. The 28-year-old was subsequently handed an 8/10 player rating by GOAL.

Merino’s future is certainly not in the final third but credit where credit is due, he’s been a huge servant to Arteta in the back end of this unforgiving season for Arsenal.

They add it would 'not be a surprise' if Joe Gomez left, and teams are in for Jarell Quansah. Harvey Elliott has seemingly hinted his time at the club could be nearing an end, and if Liverpool sign Bournemouth's Milos Kerkez, Kostas Tsimikas could move on. The report adds that Barcelona like Luis Diaz and Bayern Munich want Cody Gakpo, but there is no guarantee they will leave. Finally, youth players Tyler Morton, Owen Beck, Lewis Koumas, Jayden Danns, and Ben Doak could leave on loan or make permanent exits.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Liverpool won the Premier League title once again this year but Arne Slot will have his work cut out to finish top of the pile again in 2026. The Reds reportedly have a summer 'warchest' to strengthen their squad, with Florian Wirtz set to cost a huge fee, but to fund that, sales will need to happen. They may need to show their ruthless side as well, and that could mean academy products being moved on.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

In addition to the aforementioned players, individuals such as Trey Nyoni and Stefan Bajcetic will return from their loan spells soon. Ergo, it remains to be seen if they will make the step up to the first-team squad, go on loan again, or head for a permanent exit.

As Liverpool continue to bask in the glow of another Premier League title win, a lot of hard decisions need to be made ahead of next season in regards to players' futures. And with the transfer window days away from opening, some movement could happen soon.

South Africa thrive on pace, spicy pitches and increased depth

Five takeaways from South Africa’s 3-0 Test whitewashing of Pakistan

Liam Brickhill15-Jan-2019Pace is pace, bru
South Africa has always been a fast bowling hotbed, and the current generation is in such good shape that Pakistan, well stocked with seamers themselves, were easily out-bowled. The main difference between the two attacks boiled down to one thing: pace. Pakistan’s quicks operated at around 135kph, while three out of four of the South African fast men were consistently 10kph quicker than that. True, Vernon Philander doesn’t need extreme pace to succeed, but it can’t hurt that his bowling partners had opposing batsmen ducking and weaving. Duanne Olivier, consistently the fastest bowler on either side despite the heaviness of his short-ball workload over three Tests in quick succession, also ended up as the leading wicket-taker in the series and proved the adage that “pace is pace, bru”.Bowler-friendly pitches make for great cricket
South Africa coach Ottis Gibson’s message to his batsmen was that 500 needn’t be their target on bowler-friendly pitches and, in a series where 400 was breached only once across 12 innings, the wider point for the cricket-watching public was that ball dominating bat can be just as exciting, or even more so, when compared to runs galore. There wasn’t a single session across the three Tests that didn’t demand the viewer’s attention. At times, batsmen thrived, but the bowlers were never out of the game and as a result this series was without the lulls that can afflict run-fests. Every run made had context, meaning and import.Duanne Olivier was irresistible while running through Pakistan•Associated PressSteyn’s still got it (and so does Amla)
When Dale Steyn left the field midway through the second day of the third Test, clutching his right shoulder and angrily thumping the side of the Wanderers tunnel, South Africa feared the worst. It has been a long road back to full health for Steyn, and another serious injury at this stage could have been disastrous. But he was back on the field after lunch, and in the second innings led the attack once more, bowling more overs than anyone else, and at serious pace too. Steyn, as his captain and coach have said recently, is a freak of nature, a once-in-a-generation athlete, and the fire in his eyes has not dimmed one iota. He will remain a force to be reckoned with both at the World Cup, and in Tests to follow as he sets his sights on 500 scalps. The whispers around the form of another of South Africa’s elder statesmen ahead of this series have also been firmly hushed: Hashim Amla remains as vital to South Africa’s plans as Steyn.Home is a fortress, winning away is the next step
South Africa have now won seven Test series in a row at home, but it’s been almost two years since they last won an away series, against New Zealand. Since then, South Africa lost in England, albeit with a depleted side, and then floundered in Sri Lanka. This is undoubtedly a formidable Test team in their own conditions, and their rise to No. 2 in the Test rankings has been hard earned and thoroughly deserved. Home is a fortress, but South Africa will need to start winning away as well to reach Test cricket’s summit, and re-visit the heights set when they remained unbeaten away from home from October 2007 to November 2015. After the World Cup, they have a trip to India – currently ranked Test cricket’s No. 1 side – to look forward to in October. South Africa’s ability to adapt and compete in that series will be a true marker of their progress and standing.Temba Bavuma acknowledges the applause•AFPSouth Africa are building depth
When South Africa were struggling through their tour of England in 2017, missing not only AB de Villiers but also a slew of other players through injury, a feeling started to grow that the domestic system was not producing the ready-made Test cricketers it once had, and that the shallowness of their stocks was being exposed. South Africa lost the Basil D’Oliveira trophy, but gained the services of Gibson after that tour, and one of his first acts as national coach was to set in motion a programme to groom the country’s fast bowling talent. Fast forward a year, and the increased depth and strength of their quicks is plain to see. Importantly, moves have been made in other areas too. Theunis de Bruyn’s century in Sri Lanka last year showed his mettle, while Temba Bavuma has continued to develop into a world-class pressure-absorber in the middle order, Aiden Markram is the real deal, and Zubayr Hamza gave a glimpse of what he may be capable of in his debut innings.
