Dom Bess' five helps Yorkshire to first win of One-Day Cup

Essex collapse after 103-run powerplay before Masood, Wharton guide Yorkshire home

ECB Reporters Network13-Aug-2023Dom Bess and Matthew Revis produced career-best List A bowling figures to spark an Essex batting collapse and set up Yorkshire Vikings’ first Metro Bank One-Day Cup win of the season.Bess claimed 5 for 37 as Essex subsided from 103 for 0 – underpinned by Michael Pepper’s swashbuckling personal-best 63 from 34 balls – to 221 all out in 36 overs. Revis had earlier sliced through the Essex upper order with 4 for 54.The Vikings reached their target with 25 balls remaining, barely breaking sweat and only five wickets down. Shan Masood, their Pakistani white-ball captain, led the way with a patient 54 from 66 balls, with James Wharton seeing them over the line with an unbeaten 54 from 49 balls.Yorkshire had seen two of their previous three games in the competition abandoned without a ball bowled, and the other lost to Kent by just two runs under DLS. But they bounced back on the same wicket that Essex had won a thriller under the Chelmsford floodlights against Middlesex on Friday.Pepper’s whirlwind innings encompassed the entire powerplay before he fell to the last ball of the 10th over, skying Bess to cover. The wicket had come at a cost to Yorkshire, though, as Pepper had just gone through his repertoire off the previous three balls, sweeping, lofting over midwicket and reverse-sweeping for boundaries. In all, Pepper scored 58 of his 63 runs in boundaries, three of them clearing the ropes without bouncing, two of them in an over from Ben Coad that went for 22 as Essex rattled up three figures inside 10 overs. Das contributed 32 in the opening stand of 103 and tucked into Bess with three fours in a row during a run-a-ball 36.Michael Pepper was released by London Spirit for Essex duty•Getty Images

Tom Westley maintained the tempo in a brisk 17 before he chased a wide delivery from Revis and was caught behind. Three balls later Das drove straight back to the bowler. Luc Benkenstein put on 50 in six overs with Beau Webster, both of them hammering two sixes each as Essex continued to score at around eight an over. But that charge was stifled, starting when Revis claimed his third and fourth wickets in just six balls with Benkenstein clubbing to mid-on and Simon Harmer chipping to short midwicket.Jack Shutt had Charlie Allison lbw sweeping before Bess took centre stage with the final four wickets, three of them falling in six balls as Essex left 14 overs unused, He had Webster caught behind attempting to cut, Jamal Richards patting back a return catch, Will Buttleman beaten by one that kept low and Aron Nijjar playing on.In comparison, Yorkshire’s openers were more circumspect and had just 46 on the board at the end of the powerplay, less than half of Essex’s 10-over total. The pair were together for exactly an hour, having knocked off 80 from the target, before Bean was caught in two minds against Webster’s offspin and the ball was past him before he jerked his bat down.Fellow opener Duke reverse-swept Harmer for the first of four fours in his patient 42 before he was bowled attempting to scoop Nijjar. The spinner then had George Hill snaffled at short midwicket before Harmer dived full-length to his left to take a return catch and dismiss Will Fraine. The Vikings had become becalmed in mid-innings without a boundary for almost 10 overs before Masood added to his earlier six over long leg with successive fours off Nijjar. He put on 68 in 11 overs with Wharton to take Yorkshire within 42 of victory, but was strangled down the leg-side by Westley with Buttleman taking the catch.Wharton took Yorkshire within sight of the target with two sixes in an over from Webster, the second over midwicket to reach his first white-ball fifty from 47 balls.

Worcestershire seamers battle to victory despite Taylor-made resistance

Brothers Jack and Matt fight in eighth-wicket stand but Gloucestershire succumb in final hour

ECB Reporters Network29-Jul-2023

Dillon Pennington spearheaded Worcestershire’s attack•Getty Images

Worcestershire’s seamers demonstrated admirable resolve to forge a dramatic late victory over Gloucestershire on the final day of an enthralling LV=County Championship match at the Cheltenham Festival.Adam Finch claimed 4 for 83, Dillon Pennington 4 for 63 and Joe Leach 2 for 57 as the visitors bowled out their neighbours for 311 to win by 110 runs with just 8.5 overs remaining.Worcestershire had earlier declared their second innings on 316 for 8, setting Gloucestershire a notional 421 to win in 96 overs. They looked on course to achieve a routine victory when reducing the home side to 190 for 7 shortly before tea, only for brothers Jack and Matt Taylor to stage a defiant stand of 95 in 27 overs. It took a late burst from Pennington with the second new ball to finally end Gloucestershire resistance, the Shrewsbury-born seamer removing Jack Taylor for a season’s-best 98 and Zaman Akhter in the space of three balls. He then bowled Paul van Meekeren for seven to seal victory, leaving Matt Taylor stranded on 49 not out.Achieving back-to-back victories for the first time since 2019, Worcestershire’s fourth win of this season saw them bank 23 points, while Gloucestershire picked up five. Worcestershire have moved above promotion rivals Glamorgan into second place in the table behind runaway leaders Durham, and they boast a handy 14-point advantage over the Welsh county and are 21 clear of fourth-placed Sussex, who have a game in hand. For their part, Gloucestershire are still seeking their first win of the season after 11 matches and only Yorkshire, docked 48 points by an ECB Cricket Discipline Commission panel earlier this week, sit below them in the table.Required to score at 4.39 runs an over if they were to break their long winless run, Gloucestershire never seriously considered the prospect of victory after losing three wickets during the morning session.Eager to make amends following his first-innings failure, Chris Dent played fluently in accruing five boundaries and moving smoothly to 24, only to then push tentatively at a delivery from Leach and offering Jake Libby a straightforward catch at third slip with the score on 37.Joe Phillips and Ollie Price had staged a superb stand of 100 on day two, but were unable to repeat their first-innings heroics on this occasion, both falling in quick succession to Adam Finch. Attempting to work a ball just short of a length to leg, Phillips top-edged a catch to Brett D’Oliveira at point and departed for 26 in the 16th over.Having posted scores of 85 and 115 in his last two Festival innings, Ollie Price blotted his copybook, taking on Finch and directing a top-edged hook straight to Leach at deep fine leg. He had made just 13 and Gloucestershire were 76 for 3 and in need of a reassuring partnership.Hammond and James Bracey did their best to keep Worcestershire’s seamers at bay in a stubborn alliance of 53 in 19 overs either side of the lunch interval. Although looking out of touch and vulnerable throughout, Bracey battled hard in scratching 19 from 64 balls, before pushing at a ball from Leach and falling to a fine diving catch by Gareth Roderick behind the stumps.Wickets have fallen in clusters throughout this fluctuating contest and, sure enough, the returning Dillon Pennington had Tom Price caught at the wicket without scoring in the next over, further reducing the home side to 130 for 5.Gloucestershire’s most effective batsman in red-ball cricket this season, Hammond continued to serve up resistance, going to his eighth 50 of the summer from 72 deliveries. It is perhaps revealing that he has yet to convert a single one of those half centuries into a hundred, and this innings proved no exception to that rule, the Cheltenham-born left-hander attempting to pull Finch and playing on, undone by a ball that kept low.He had contributed 64, faced 106 balls and struck half a dozen fours and a six, and with him went Gloucestershire’s best chance of saving the game. Fired up and in the zone, the aggressive Finch generated additional pace to bowl Zafar Gohar for five in his next over from the College Lawn End.With 40 overs still to negotiate, Gloucestershire were 190 for 7 and reliant upon their last recognised batsman, Jack Taylor, who at least reached the sanctuary of the tea interval unbeaten on 40 in partnership with younger brother Matt.Attack proved the best form of defence for the elder Taylor, who drove Leach down the ground for his ninth four to raise his first Championship 50 of the season from just 54 balls. He was just two runs short of his hundred when controversy flared. Taylor blocked a ball from Pennington, who then attempted to shy at the stumps only to hit the batsman. Umpire Martin Saggers intervened as tempers flared, awarding five penalty runs to Gloucestershire and issuing Pennington with a verbal warning.Pennington had the last laugh however, Jack Taylor dragging the next delivery onto his stumps and departing for 98. Akhter fell two balls later, edging Pennington low to first slip, leaving Gloucestershire on the brink.

Hasaranga and Kumara set up Sri Lanka's demolition of Oman

A second consecutive five-wicket haul from Wanindu Hasaranga skittled Oman for 98 – the second-lowest ODI total in their history – as Sri Lanka cruised to a ten-wicket win. The result means Sri Lanka have one foot in the Super Sixes with two wins from two.The win set up by Hasaranga with figures of 5 for 13 was finished off by the Sri Lankan openers, who completed the chase in 15 overs. Dimuth Karunaratne notched his 10th ODI fifty in the process. The nature of the win has also given a significant boost to Sri Lanka’s net run rate – something which they will be able to carry over to the Super Sixes stage, provided Oman qualify. As for Oman, they remain in a good position to make the next round despite this defeat, with two wins from their three games. On an overcast and cold Bulawayo morning, Dasun Shanaka wasted little time in putting Oman into bat, with proceedings expected to be tough for the batters early on.Lahiru Kumara, bowling consistently in the 135-140kph range, was particularly impressive, as his pace allied with the hard lengths he so often looks to exploit, proved too much for the Oman batters, most of whom weren’t used to contending with such pace. Kumara’s first wicket came in his first over through a good length delivery that pitched and straightened on off stump. Kashyap Prajapati, who saw a leading edge dropped by Kumara off a similar ball earlier in the over, failed to get bat on it and was trapped on the back pad.Lahiru Kumara put on an impressive show, picking up three wickets•ICC via Getty Images

Kumara’s next two would come courtesy some shorter stuff, with first Zeeshan Maqsood and then Mohammad Nadeem chipping to square leg. He would end with figures of 3 for 22 in eight overs – a Player-of-the-Match worthy performance on any other day.Kasun Rajitha at the other end picked up just a solitary wicket but was consistently threatening by bowling the nagging line outside off. Fittingly, it was an outswinger to Aqib Ilyas that would give him a deserved return, with the right-hander pushing uncertainly outside his off stump only to get a thick edge to a recently-installed fifth slip. The Kumara-Rajitha one-two combo would eventually see Oman slide to 20 for 4 midway through the 10th over. Karunaratne, speaking after the game, said the conditions provided the pace attack an opening and they grabbed it. “Today we won the toss and there was something for the fast bowlers, with the cloudy conditions. They grabbed the opportunity.”A 52-run stand between Jatinder Singh and Ayaan Khan then provided Oman a glimmer of hope of reaching a respectable total. But in a single Hasaranga over all such hopes were vanquished. Three googlies, three wickets, zero runs – Jatinder, Shoaib Khan and Jay Odedra all sent packing. Jatinder and Odedra were dismissed lbw while Shoaib was castled after an ill-advised attempt at a slog. After that it was just a matter of time.Ayaan sought to soldier on with the tail, but Hasaranga wasn’t having any of it. He would complete his five-for trapping Bilal Khan lbw as the last man. Four of his five wickets were either lbw or bowled. Only Ayaan, who was caught expertly at slip, would require the intervention of a team-mate. There was a run-out in the mix as well, just to compound a miserable day for Oman and yet another perfect outing for Sri Lanka.Karunaratne summed it up: “We’ve won convincingly, and that’s what we’ve wanted to do. Everything is is pretty good shape. But we want to take it match by match and get to the Super Sixes.”

Saurabh Kumar's eight-for crushes East Zone; North trounce North East

Central will face defending champions West Zone in the semi-final; North will be up against South

Himanshu Agrawal01-Jul-2023Saurabh Kumar’s career-best figures of 8 for 64 helped Central Zone romp to a 170-run win over East Zone in Alur to secure a place in the semi-final of the Duleep Trophy. The left-arm spinner finished with 11 wickets in the match, having taken 3 for 46 in the first innings.Central will next face West Zone, the defending champions who had direct entry into the semi-final. That game, starting on July 5, will also be played in Alur.East had started the final day at 69 for 6, and it took Central only 12 overs on the final morning to get the remaining four wickets, all going to Saurabh.Saurabh first trapped Riyan Parag lbw in the 34th over, before cleaning up Shahbaz Nadeem in the 38th. Four overs later, he removed Akash Deep and Ishan Porel off successive deliveries to seal the win. East’s top scorer in the second innings was No. 10 Akash Deep, who entertained with a 14-ball 24, which included three sixes off Saurabh.Saurabh’s eight wickets meant East folded for 129, their second batting failure in the game after they had managed only 122 in the first attempt. The other two wickets in East’s second innings went to Shivam Mavi and Avesh Khan on the third evening.North Zone completed a massive win over North East•PTI Narang, Sindhu complete the formalitiesNorth Zone decimated North East Zone by 511 runs on the fourth morning in Bengaluru to complete the formalities towards their march to the semi-final. North will now be facing South Zone from July 5 onwards at the same venue to try to make the final.Having started the day on 58 for 3, North East lost 7 for 53 in a middle-order collapse fashioned by Pulkit Narang. He got four of those wickets with his offspin. The only bright spot for North East was the 57-run fourth-wicket partnership between Palzor Tamang and Nilesh Lamichaney. It was allrounder Nishant Sindhu who broke the stand with Lamichaney’s wicket, which began North East’s slide from 101 for 3. Tamang, who top-scored with 40, was next to fall, as Narang got his first wicket in the second outing. While Narang finished the game with seven wickets and 46 runs, it was also a memorable game for North’s young players, such as Sindhu, who had hit 150 before picking up two wickets on Saturday, and Harshit Rana, who scored an unbeaten 122 and also took two wickets in the match.

Kashif, D'Oliveira 90s steer Worcestershire to brink of promotion

Fifth-wicket partnership lifts visitors after Yorkshire seamers utilise damp conditions

Kashif Ali picked the perfect time to post a career best 93 as he helped steer Worcestershire towards promotion in the LV= Insurance County Championship during a positive first day against Yorkshire at Headingley.Kashif, 25, had only scored 98 runs in four previous appearances dating back to last summer. Here, he led a recovery from 67 for 4, having been inserted, to 280 for 5 from 80 overs with 15 fours in 131 balls. The start of this season-ending fixture was delayed until 12.40pm because of rain, and Yorkshire made use of a new-ball pitch.Seamers Ben Coad and George Hill struck twice apiece for a Yorkshire side aiming to elevate themselves off the bottom of Division Two following their mid-season points deduction. But the Pears recovered strongly through Kashif and captain Brett D’Oliveira, who shared 155 either side of tea. The latter finished on 90 not out off 192 balls.Worcestershire started the day knowing they would be promoted by reaching 300 inside 110 overs. Surely now, they will play Division One cricket next summer for the first time since 2018.Kashif went beyond 50 for the second time this summer and D’Oliveira for the third time in as many matches, the latter also reaching 5000 first-class career runs in the process. While Yorkshire’s aim of avoiding bottom place is an important one, it is only to boost morale. They need to win to have any chance.Coad struck twice early on, with Fin Bean and Adam Lyth – at third and second slip – taking good low catches to remove Gareth Roderick and Pakistan overseas batter Azhar Ali cheaply, leaving the score at 22 for 2.Hill then trapped Jake Libby lbw for 32 and had Jack Haynes caught at third slip by Bean for 14, the visitors in some peril at 67 for 4 in the 20th over.Kashif promises to be vital for Worcestershire in their bid for success in Division One. He has shown more progress in white-ball cricket since joining the Pears as the first product out of the South Asian Cricket Academy last summer. But with Haynes going to Nottinghamshire this winter as one of a host of departures from New Road, a fair bit will rest on his shoulders against the red-ball next year.Batting was difficult against the new ball but became a lot easier as the day progressed. While both Kashif and D’Oliveira were off-side dominant en route to their respective well-paced fifties, Kashif played one dreamy on-drive down the ground off Hill after tea which stood out from the crowd.Just as Kashif will be important for the Pears going forwards, Yorkshire will hope Matt Milnes spearheads their bid for promotion in 2024. Milnes was Yorkshire’s marquee signing ahead of this season, but this is only his second appearance. Just weeks after announcing his arrival last August, the England Lions quick suffered a back stress fracture in his farewell appearance for Kent.He spent the entire winter rehabbing in the Headingley gym and nets and gained selection for the opening match of this summer, the home Championship defeat against Leicestershire.Unfortunately, having encouraged in that fixture with four wickets and a first-innings 75 as a nightwatchman, he reported more pain and was diagnosed with exactly the same injury.Milnes has recovered once more and has played three second-team Championship matches in the last three weeks. Yorkshire opted to reward the 29-year-old for his hard work with a season-ending return to first-team colours.Milnes bowled three spells en-route to figures of nought for 46 from 14 overs and was at his most threatening in his first of six which cost 15 runs. He could quite easily have had a couple of early wickets like Coad and Hill. But Kashif and D’Oliveira advanced Worcestershire’s cause in eye-catching and confident fashion. They reached tea at 130 for 4 and later recorded their fifties off 62 and 78 balls.Kashif fell when he miscued a return catch to Dom Bess – leaving Worcestershire 222 for 5 in the 64th over. D’Oliveira was dropped on 63 by Lyth at slip off Bess, surviving to share 58 unbroken with Ben Allison, 31 not out.Worcestershire are almost there.

Man Utd "hopeful" about signing "astonishing" £50m forward; talks advancing

Manchester United are now “hopeful” about signing an “astonishing” £50m forward this summer, with talks now advancing, according to reliable reporter Ben Jacobs.

Man Utd eyeing exciting young players

Man United are currently sitting 15th in the Premier League table, with it looking increasingly likely they will record their lowest-ever finish in the top tier, so Ruben Amorim is likely to feel a significant rebuild is needed this summer and beyond.

As such, United are now eyeing some exciting young players, and a recent report has revealed they could make an ambitious move for FC Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal, amid the La Liga side’s ongoing financial issues.

Yamal is not the only Barca player the Red Devils are looking at, as they are also believed to be leading the race for 21-year-old left-back Alejandro Balde, with Amorim searching for a replacement for Luke Shaw, who has struggled with injuries for quite some time.

Since Amorim’s arrival from Sporting CP, Man United have been linked with moves for some of his former players, with striker Viktor Gyokeres believed to be of interest, while they are also known to be keen on 17-year-old winger Geovany Quenda.

Sporting CP's GeovanyQuenda

Jacobs has now dropped a new update on United’s pursuit of Quenda in an interview with GiveMeSport, saying: “Talks are advancing, but not necessarily advanced, because Manchester United are sticking to their number.

“And at the moment, as you would expect, Sporting are doing the same as well. So there has been a little bit of an impasse, but Jorge Mendes is directly involved in negotiations, and because the player has a desire to join Manchester United, they remain hopeful that something can get done.

“They see appeal in a talented teenager who can join when he’s 18, and can play right-wing or right wing-back.”

Quenda making waves in Portugal

The young winger, who is expected to cost around £50m, has already established himself as a regular starter for Sporting, making 23 appearances in the Liga Portugal this season, during which time he has picked up one goal and four assists.

The teenager has particularly impressed with his dribbling ability, ranking in the 94th percentile for successful take-ons per 90 over the past year, when compared to his positional peers, and the 87th percentile for progressive carries.

Portugal boss Roberto Martinez has also praised the Sporting starlet, suggesting he could soon be ready to collect his first cap for his national side.

“He had an excellent European Championship with the U17s. He has stepped into the first team of Sporting and demonstrated an astonishing personality.”

As such, it is exciting news that Quenda is keen on a move to Old Trafford, and his ability to play at wing-back is an added bonus, given that Amorim has made it clear he will not compromise on his three-at-the-back system.
