The prodigious journey of Smriti Mandhana

At the age of 15, Smriti Mandhana wanted to forego a career in cricket and instead study science. By the age of 19, she was the key batsman of an Indian side that had completed historic wins in England and Australia

Shashank Kishore18-Mar-2016At an age where her friends are just starting to contemplate a career, Smriti Mandhana, 19, has already established herself as a pivot around which the Indian batting revolves. Her maturity, which has become a hallmark of her game, shines through as she talks about breaking “female stereotypes” and “changing perceptions.”The picture of a very serious and focused character may emerge, but while she is a model of concentration on the field, she is quite a prankster off it. Her room is often branded as the “play station arena”, where she throws open challenges – “Come and get me. If you can, the meal is on me.” Dancing sessions are a no go because the others are “much better,” but songs, especially those of Arijit Singh, have her reaching out for the loop button.Mandhana’s mindset and personal space is a reflection of how much things have changed in the Indian dressing room since she made her international debut as a 16-year old in 2013. Professionalism, recent results and team bonding sessions have helped break the ice.”We are a family now, this is the closest we have ever been because we have spent more time together in the last three months than we have at home,” Mandhana tells ESPNcricinfo. “The Australia tour helped many of the girls break the ice. The vibe is so positive and energetic, can’t remember a dressing room like the one we have now since my debut.”While she talks about her journey with fondness, there is a hint of disbelief at how things have panned out so quickly. After all, her life is not quite like that of an average teenager growing up in India. But that she is measured is not lost upon anyone.

****

There is a bat that Mandhana carries in her kit that is almost as big as her. She drags it to training, but does not use it. It is a bat that was autographed by Rahul Dravid for her older brother Shravan, an aspiring cricketer who made it as far as Maharashtra Under-19s before the pursuit of academic excellence resulted in a promising career coming to a halt. He is now employed with a private bank in Sangli, a small town in Maharashtra, as a branch manager. When Shravan was briefly scorching the domestic scene for Maharashtra Under-16s, Mandhana used to tag along with her father to watch him play. While Shravan used to reel off runs and see his name printed in the local papers, Mandhana used to carefully cut and collect those clippings. “One day, I thought I should also be scoring runs like this,” her eyes light up. “My father never said no to me, so whenever my brother went for a net session, he used to lob balls at me gently.”What Mandhana does not tell you is at first, she hated the ball being lobbed at her gently. “Then my father started bowling from 15 yards, and he noticed I could hit the ball well. I didn’t even know what a cover drive or square cut was. I am a right-hander otherwise, but because my father had a fascination for left-hand batsmen, my brother and I played left-handed. So that is how it started.”Young Mandhana was all of nine when she was first picked in Maharashtra’s Under-15 state side. But the confidence with which she would face up to bowlers older than her convinced her father that she had a future, even though he was not sure how to channelise it. Long work hours at a textile company, where he worked as a chemical distributor, left him little time on weekdays. But he put her under the watchful eyes of Anant Tambwekar, a junior state coach.”I used to train in the morning, then go to school, and then have nets in the evening,” she says. “Sometimes, if the teachers let me go early, I used to finish evening nets and then go home and watch TV.” Wasn’t running around difficult? “No, in Sangli everything is easy,” comes her swift reply.”Unlike Mumbai or Pune, there’s not much time spent on the road. Even at the ground, once the boys finished training, I could get someone to bowl at me for as long as I wanted. I couldn’t have had that kind of practice in big cities.”At 11, Mandhana was fast-tracked into the Maharashtra Under-19s side, but an opportunity in the playing XI did not come about for the first two years. When she finally had the chance, she could not quite make the most of it. At 15, Mandhana had a big decision to make. “Class X boards,” she laughs. “I wanted to study science, but my mother dissuaded me because she knew I wouldn’t be able to balance studies and cricket then.””That [England] tour changed me as a cricketer. To score a fifty and win the Test, which was our first win in eight years, was extremely special”•Getty ImagesScience clearly was not her thing, and her mother’s decision, which she is thankful for now, stood vindicated as Mandhana scored three centuries and a double-century – an unbeaten 224 against Gujarat Under-19s in Vadodara – in the Inter State Under-19s one-day competition. She followed that up with tall scores in the two Under-19 limited-overs tournaments which paved way for her inclusion in the Challenger Trophy. Against the country’s best bowling crop, Mandhana clearly towered over the rest, leading the run-charts that brought her into the national reckoning. At 15, Mandhana had most things going her way. But the quest for more cricket kept her edgy, even as she saw her peers in Mumbai and Bangalore train at big grounds on turf wickets. While moving out was not even an option, Mandhana built a concrete pitch with her savings to facilitate her batting sessions under Tambwekar’s watch. All those sacrifices paid off when she earned her India call-up in 2013, after a number of senior players were rested for a short limited-overs series against Bangladesh in the wake of a disappointing World Cup campaign. But it was not until 2014 that she left her imprints. A call-up to the World T20 meant she had to skip her Class XII board exams; a tour of England later that year meant a she would have had to miss a year, and forego admissions into a hotel management course she wanted to enroll for.”Whatever little doubts I had, vanished after the England tour,” she says. “That tour changed me as a cricketer. To score a fifty and win the Test, which was our first win in eight years, was extremely special. After that, we started getting more matches. So now, I’m thankful that my mother prevented me from choosing science in school. I wouldn’t have been able to manage, no way!”A central contract, she says, guarantees financial security, but she does not want to look too far ahead. “Any form of cricket, the moment you switch off and take things lightly, we all know what will happen,” she says pragmatically. “While money reduces your external worries, I hope to finish my commerce degree too,” Mandhana, who is a first-year Bachelor of Commerce student at Chintaman Rao College of Commerce in Sangli, says.”I haven’t attended lectures though, but attendance is not an issue. Studying sometimes helps me from over-thinking. But for now, I’m happy playing cricket. Winning a World Cup is a dream. There’s the T20 World Cup now and a 50-over World Cup next year. Who knows, our time isn’t too far away.”When she started playing, she wanted to bat like Matthew Hayden, but remodeled herself around Kumar Sangakkara’s style once her coaches told her timing, and not brute force was her forte. For now, she is happy to revel in Hayden’s praise after her exploits in Australia, where India won a T20I series for the first time. “That was something,” she chuckles. It indeed was.

Leicester make approach to club for January signing, agent contacts expected

Leicester City have made an approach to a club over the signing of a new defender, according to a recent report. The Foxes suffered their first defeat under Ruud van Nistelrooy on Saturday, but the Dutchman will be hoping it doesn’t unravel the positive work he has already done at the King Power Stadium.

"Clever" £75k-p/w Leicester mainstay set to miss multiple games with injury

Frustrating timing for the Foxes.

ByTom Cunningham Dec 14, 2024 Leicester transfer news

The January transfer window opens in a couple of weeks, and like any new manager, van Nistelrooy will have his eye on potential new signings he would like the club to make.

It has already been claimed that Leicester have made an offer to sign Leuven midfielder Ezechiel Banzuzi. The 19-year-old is wanted by a few teams across Europe, but the Foxes may hold an advantage in the race, as they and Leuven are owned by the same person, Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha. It is believed that Banzuzi could cost the Premier League side as much as £12.4 million.

As well as looking at Banzuzi, Leicester are also in the race to sign winger Ryan Kent. The former Rangers man is currently without a club after leaving Fenerbahçe earlier this season, and a number of Premier League teams are interested in securing his services for the remainder of the campaign at the very least.

Ipswich Town and Crystal Palace are also interested in signing Kent, so the competition is fierce, but it could be a deal that doesn’t happen until the New Year, despite the player not being under contract.

Leicester make approach to Atalanta for Ben Godfrey signing

According to ASRomaLive.it, relayed by Sport Witness, Leicester City have made an approach to Atalanta over the signing of Ben Godfrey. The centre-back, who can also play at left-back and right-back, looks set for a possible January transfer, as his move to Italy hasn’t gone as he would have hoped.

The 26-year-old was snapped up by Atalanta in the summer from Everton, but it is a move that hasn’t worked out, as he’s only played four times for the Italian side in his six months there, two of which have been in the Champions League. Godfrey has yet to start a game for Atalanta, playing just 67 minutes in total from the bench, despite the fact that he cost them £10 million when he arrived from Goodison Park.

It is now being reported that Atalanta are willing to let Godfrey leave in January, whether it be a loan deal or a permanent switch. Manager Gian Piero Gasperini has given the “green light” for a transfer, as he will probably have his eyes on his own reinforcements. Godfrey is keen on leaving the Serie A side and has interest from Leicester, Wolves and Nottingham Forest.

Lewis-Skelly spoke to reporters at Wembley Stadium after making his senior England debut as a starter in the 2-0 win over Albania. He was picked at left-back in an experimental defensve unit, flanking fellow debutant, 32-year-old Dan Burn. It took just 20 minutes for him to find the net and open the scoring.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The last few months have been a whirlwind for Lewis-Skelly. He started the season in Arsenal's Under-21 squad, but was promoted to the first-team in late August to help cover defensive injuries. Even then, the teenager spent much of his time on the bench until a first Premier League start in December, after which he has cemented his place in Mikel Arteta's preferred XI. His England call-up by Thomas Tuchel earlier this month was deserved and widely praised.

  • WHAT MYLES LEWIS-SKELLY SAID

"I am lost for words. This past six months have gone so quickly. I stay in the present and I take every moment as it comes," he said.

"[For the goal], all I remember is staying wide and rotating with Marcus Rashford. Jude [Bellingham] loves to stay on the half-turn. It was a great pass from him and the timing was very good. The finish, the keeper was coming at me, and I tried to put it between the legs. I didn't even think I was going to score.

"I found out [I was starting] in the morning in the meeting and when I saw my name my heart started to pound – I was so excited. So many messages before the game. They are all here tonight and it means the world to them. Honestly, it is incredible – this is a day I'll never forget."

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Aged 18 years and 176 days, Lewis-Skelly broke Marcus Rashford's 2016 record to become the youngest-ever England player to score on their senior men's debut. Rashford was 18 years and 209 days when he found the net against Australia in pre-Euro 2016 warm-up.

Ross Taylor returns for opening round of Ford Trophy

“One-day cricket was probably my best format in international cricket, so it’s nice to be playing some white-ball and Ford Trophy,” he says

ESPNcricinfo staff23-Nov-2022Ross Taylor is set to return to the Ford Trophy on Thursday for Central Districts’ first one-day match of the season. Taylor had retired from international cricket earlier this year but is still available for domestic games and is among the 13 names for Central Districts’ opening game against Otago. This will be Taylor’s 20th season for Central Districts, the only team he has represented in New Zealand domestic cricket. He was their top-scorer last season on their way to the final with a tally of 279 runs at an average of 55.80 and a strike rate of 137.43, which included two half-centuries and a 49-ball hundred against Wellington.”It was good to make the final last year, but hopefully we’ll go one better this year,” Taylor said. “I haven’t played for CD for a while after the BLACKCAPS retirement, so it’s nice to be back playing cricket in New Zealand again, and with a lot of team-mates whom I’ve played a lot of cricket with.”One-day cricket was probably my best format in international cricket, so it’s nice to be playing some white-ball and Ford Trophy. I’m really looking forward to it.”Taylor has been training with Central Districts in recent weeks after returning from India where he played in the Road Safety World Series and Legends League Cricket – two tournaments that feature retired international players – in September and October. Will Young will lead Central Districts for the first six rounds of the Ford Trophy to give Tom Bruce a break, and Bruce will take over the captaincy for the Super Smash and the remainder of their Ford Trophy campaign.Central Districts squad Will Young (capt), Doug Bracewell, Tom Bruce, Josh Clarkson, Dane Cleaver (wk), Jayden Lennox, Ajaz Patel, Brett Randell, Seth Rance, Brad Schmulian, Ross Taylor, Blair Tickner, Ray Toole

Man City need to axe £230k-p/w problem who Txiki said was "exceptional"

It has been an appalling few weeks for Manchester City. Pep Guardiola’s side are on an unimaginable run of form, having won just one game in their last ten outings in all competitions. That victory came against Nottingham Forest, a 3-0 win in the Premier League at the Etihad Stadium.

After Wednesday night’s loss to Juventus, Guardiola’s side have slipped to 22nd in the Champions League table, and their eight points place them just one point inside the playoff zone. They are really cutting it fine to qualify for the next round.

The Cityzens have been arguably let down by some of their star men this season.

City’s worst performers in 2024/25

It has certainly been a tough season for the 2022/23 treble winners, who are failing to live up to the expectations surrounding them after dominating English, and European football, for the last few seasons.

Phil Foden is one of the players who is struggling this term. The England international has looked a shadow of his former self, having won the PFA Player of the Year award for last season.

He has played 17 games in all competitions so far this term, scoring three goals and assisting two. His only goal contribution at home was a goal in a 5-0 thrashing of Sparta Prague.

Another player who has not performed well this season is new signing Savinho. The Brazilian joined the Cityzens over the summer for £30.8m from Troyes but has not managed to score his first goal in Blue yet. He has grabbed five assists in 20 games across competitions, but it has been a disappointing start to life in East Manchester.

Kyle Walker has been a key component of City’s success in the last few seasons, but he has had a rapid decline. Although he has played 14 times in all competitions, he has struggled. The Guardian journalist Ben McAleer explained there have been “clear indications of a Walker decline for months”, dating back to Euro 2024.

It has been sad for City fans to see their star players out of form and their new signings struggling to adapt. Someone who could fit in both of those categories is Ilkay Gundogan.

Gundogan’s stats in 2024/25

German midfielder Gundogan returned to Manchester City in the summer after spending a season away from the club at La Liga giants Barcelona. He signed a one-year deal with the option of a second season.

It was certainly an exciting move for the club, with outgoing Director of Football Txiki Begiristain full of praise for the midfielder. He called him an “exceptional” footballer, which is more than fair given what he achieved at the club in his first spell.

During his first stint as a Cityzen, the former Borussia Dortmund midfielder played 304 games, scoring 60 goals and grabbing 38 assists. He played a crucial role in their trophy success, capping it off by winning the treble in 2022/23. That season, the German played 51 games, scoring 11 goals and grabbing eight assists.

However, this season the 34-year-old has been a far cry from that form. The City number 19 has played 21 games in all competitions, scoring twice and grabbing just one assist.

It is perhaps no coincidence that his poor performances have coincided with this lull in form for his team.

Football analyst and City supporter Umir explained earlier in the season that the German can, at times “look fatigued” and also “lacks a bit of sharpness”. It is fair to say the City legend has not left a lasting impression on supporters so far during his second spell

Given he is earning an eye-watering £230k per week at the Etihad Stadium, there is an argument to say that City got this signing wrong.

He has not been anywhere near as good as during his first spell, and for the money they spend on his weekly wage, it is an expensive investment for disappointing performances.

Joe Root says he 'owed' England a hundred after lean run of scores

Unbeaten 153 drives home first-day advantage before bowlers cement dominance

Vithushan Ehantharajah25-Feb-2023Joe Root says he “owed” England his 29th Test century after finishing unbeaten on 153 at Wellington on day two of the second Test against New Zealand.Root’s innings, the 14th time he has gone past 150 in Tests, has now put his average back above 50. It allowed England to declare on 435 for 8 and have two cracks at the New Zealand batting order before and after lunch. The hosts were reduced to 138 for 7 before the rain came to wash out the final two hours of play, for the second day in succession. This was Root’s fourth century under Ben Stokes’ and Brendon McCullum’s tenure, but it came after he had admitted to struggling to find a balance between contributing and doing so in a manner which aligns with the new attacking approach of this side. The way he went up the gears on this occasion – his last 103 runs took just 102 balls – was very much the Root of old. He credits Harry Brook, who only added two to his overnight score before being caught and bowled for 186 by Matt Henry, for bringing it out of him. The Yorkshire pair added 302 for the fourth wicket, having come together at 21 for 3.”I felt like I owed that to the group,” Root said. “It’s been a while since I made a solid contribution. To be part of such a big partnership was really pleasing and I think the best thing was I had the best seat in the house to watch Harry go about his business. It’s a joy to watch him play at the minute. He certainly made my life a lot easier out there, the way he manages to wrestle momentum in our favour and constantly put bowlers under pressure.”When he comes and plays as he does – if you slightly over-pitch he hits you over your head, if you miss short he goes midwicket, he’ll back away and hit you through the off side – it’s difficult to know where to bowl with him. When you get down the other end it just feels like there’s less pressure on you, and more opportunity to get him back on strike and down the business end.”I felt we had a really good understanding, we negated a few modes of dismissal by getting down the crease. We fed off each quite nicely and made it difficult for them to bowl one length for us.”Root also credited Stokes for the timing of the declaration, allowing James Anderson to remove Devon Conway and Kane Williamson before lunch, before the rest of the top five were dismissed with just 77 on the board. Without the weather intervening, there was a strong chance of all 10 wickets before the scheduled close of play.Related

  • England's past, present and future combine in Harry 'n' Joe's Shawshank-and-sledgehammer stand

  • James Anderson, Jack Leach share six as England capitalise on attacking declaration

“I think it was a brilliant call from Ben,” Root said. “It felt like that 40 minutes before the break, the sun was out and with 40 minutes of sun, a heavy roller and 40 minutes of sun at lunch, it might have changed the wicket.”It didn’t work out like that, it gave a better opportunity to make the most of conditions. The way we’re playing at the minute with the confidence we’ve got, seeing the ball move around with the No. 1 Test bowler, the two leading wicket-takers we’ve ever had, it just seemed a very brave and attacking option. Full credit to Ben, as you’d expect, for taking it on.”He’s just walked so naturally into the role, he’s managing the game really well and everyone is responding to it. I just think was a brilliant call from him, it would have been very easy for us to keep going and we might not be sat here with them seven-down tonight. Credit to him, he’s doing a great job.”As for the match going forward, a follow-on could be on the cards, given the likelihood of more rain interruptions and the relatively light workload of England’s bowlers so far. Either way, the result will decide whether this century ranks as one of Root’s best since the start of last summer.”Potentially,” he answered when asked whether this one was top of the four, the others having come in the opening matches of last summer, including two successful run-chases at Lord’s and Edgbaston. “We’ll see how the game turns out. You always judge how well you’ve played off the back of a result and I’m certainly sat here in this position, at the end of day two, having them seven-down with a huge lead is very satisfying right now. Hopefully we can follow through on it and continue all the good cricket we’ve played up to now.”

Warner gives up appeal against captaincy ban, says review panel wants 'public lynching'

David Warner has given up his attempts at having his lifetime leadership ban overturned and launched a scathing attack on the process, claiming the independent panel put in place to review the sanction wanted to put him through a “public lynching”.In lengthy social-media posts that went up shortly before 6pm on the eve of the Adelaide Test, Warner alleged that the counsel assisting the review panel, which is independent of Cricket Australia, had made “offensive” comments during the process.Related

When CA ratified the amendment to their code of conduct, which allowed Warner to appeal his leadership ban, they confirmed it was not an appeal against the initial decision or a review of the original offence – the role he played during the Newlands ball-tampering saga in 2018.”In effect, Counsel Assisting, and, it appears, to some extent the Review Panel, want to conduct a public trial of me and what occurred during the Third Test at Newlands,” Warner wrote. “They want to conduct a public spectacle to, in the Panel’s words, have a “cleansing”. I am not prepared for my family to be the washing machine for cricket’s dirty laundry.”Counsel Assisting the Review Panel appeared to be determined to revisit the events of March 2018 and the Review Panel appears determined to expose me and my family to further humiliation and harm by conducting a media circus.”Regrettably, I have no practical alternative at this point in time but to withdraw my application. I am not prepared to subject my family or my teammates to further trauma and disruption by accepting a departure from the way in which my application should be dealt with pursuant to the Code of Conduct.”Some things are more important than cricket.”As part of the statement that extended beyond 700 words, Warner added that the counsel assisting’s role had been terminated and that CA had supported him in challenging the approach the review panel had taken, but that after a week they had “decided to ignore the request in any meaningful way””It appears that the Panel has given no more than passing consideration to issues of player welfare and the interests of Australian cricket and is instead determined to conduct a public lynching,” he wrote.Warner also spelt out the impact the last four years have had on him and his family and the efforts he has made to rehabilitate himself.”Since that Test and even though my ban from leadership roles may never be lifted, I have taken it upon myself to reform, to rehabilitate and to transform my approach to the game,” he wrote. “I have served and been subject to a crushing, unprecedented, penalty that has horribly impacted me and my family for the past nearly five years.”A Cricket Australia spokesperson confirmed that they supported Warner’s bid to have the hearing in private.”We are disappointed with this outcome as our intention was to give David the opportunity to demonstrate why his lifetime leadership ban should be varied at an independent hearing and we amended our Code of Conduct accordingly,” a statement said.”We supported David’s wish for these discussions to be heard behind closed doors and respect his decision to withdraw his application. David is a very senior and highly regarded member of the Australian team who has been a great ambassador for the game as a whole since his return from a year-long ban.”Although it was far from certain that Warner would have had the opportunity to captain again if his ban had been overturned he had been discussed as a short-term option for Australia’s T20 side heading into the 2024 T20 World Cup.

As bad as Alexander-Arnold: Slot must axe 5/10 Liverpool dud after Man Utd

da esport bet: Liverpool dropped points at home for just the third time in the Premier League this season, drawing 2-2 with Manchester United at Anfield earlier this evening.

da cassino online: Goals from Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah looked to secure all three points for Arne Slot’s side after Lisandro Martínez put the visitors ahead just minutes into the second half.

However, Amad Diallo found the net late on, securing a point for Ruben Amorim’s men, with the Reds’ backline unable to prevent a run and cut back from substitute Alejandro Garnacho.

After Arsenal’s failure to secure all three points against Brighton yesterday, Slot’s side still sit six points ahead of the Gunners with 19 games remaining in the 2024/25 campaign.

However, it was an afternoon to forget for numerous players, potentially putting their first-team future at risk, especially given the opening of the transfer window earlier this week.

Attacker Luis Diaz started at the top end of the pitch once more for Liverpool this afternoon, looking to build on his impressive display against West Ham last weekend where he scored his third goal in just two matches.

However, he was a lonely figure against the Red Devils, only managing 23 touches and completing just nine passes in the process as the visitors sat in a low block for the majority of the first half.

The Colombian also lost 58% of his duels and lost possession seven times, looking wasteful and ineffective when the ball eventually fell his way before his withdrawal on the hour mark.

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future has been a huge talking point in recent weeks amid interest from Real Madrid, with his head evidently not in the clash today after his woeful showing on Merseyside.

The academy graduate endured a performance to forget, losing possession 25 times – the most of any player – whilst losing 100% of his duels, often looking well off the pace of a derby day clash at Anfield.

He was eventually booked for preventing a counter attack before being replaced by Conor Bradley in the closing stages, topping off his dismal showing for the Reds.

However, despite his lack of positive impact, another first-team star was just as disappointing, failing to take advantage of the opportunity handed in his direction.

The Liverpool star who was as bad as Alexander-Arnold

Midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai missed the clash against United through illness, with boss Slot handing a starting role to Curtis Jones once again.

The 23-year-old has already scored three times in the league this campaign but was unable to add to his tally this afternoon, looking slow in possession and unable to provide that creative spark within the final third.

Like Diaz, he was replaced upon the hour mark as Slot hunted for the goal to give his side the lead, but after his lack of impact, his withdrawal was warranted, potentially putting his starting role at risk in the coming weeks.

Jones only notched a total of just 37 touches, just four more than goalkeeper Alisson, completing just 25 passes at a pass completion of 89% – undoubtedly a misleading figure, with 9% of his efforts moving in a forward direction.

He gifted possession back to the opposition six times – an average of once every 6.1 times he touched the ball, whilst only managing to win 50% of the duels he entered on the pitch.

The midfielder’s lack of creativity was evident by the fact he failed to produce any shots on goal, whilst completing zero key passes or any dribbles past the opposition.

As a result, he was handed a measly 5/10 match rating from The Express’ Charlie Gordon, with Gary Neville claiming the academy star “really struggled” during his commentary duties at Anfield.

Given his showing, Jones will be lucky to maintain his role as a starter on Wednesday night when the Reds travel to North London to face Tottenham Hotspur in the semi-final of the Carabao Cup.

Many supporters will be hoping Szoboszlai will be able to feature after his illness, further pushing the 23-year-old down the pecking order after his latest disappointing display.
