Ruhan Pretorius has revealed he was in “a bit of a weird space” after his positive Covid test result led Ireland Wolves’ first one-day game in Bangladesh to be abandoned after 30 overs, only for him to discover a day later that the result was a false positive.Pretorius, 30, was born and raised in South Africa but has played club cricket in Ireland since 2015, and after relocating permanently, he will qualify for international selection through residency in 2022.Related

He was not picked for the first-class game against a Bangladesh Emerging Team, meaning that the first 50-over game was his first appearance for an Irish representative team. He had taken one wicket in his first four-over spell as a first-change bowler, but was told to leave the field after 30 overs, with the match abandoned soon after.”It’s been the most bizarre few days, to be honest,” Pretorius said in an interview with Cricket Ireland. “We started the first game all testing negative for Covid – we had to be negative in order to get on the field according to the protocols. Then halfway through the first innings I was pulled off the field and the game was stopped. To then be told I was potentially Covid-positive was a shock.”I was isolated immediately from the team and was told to wear an orange suit – kind of like a sweat suit, but this one was for isolation. I then was taken in an ambulance to the team hotel, where I was immediately sent to the isolation room and spent the evening there.”To be fair, the team management were brilliant in managing the whole situation. I underwent two tests – an emergency test and another along with the rest of the team. Luckily both came back negative, and the medical staff advised that the original test was a false positive, so I was able to resume the tour.”I was in a bit of a weird space after trying to get used to being in isolation, and thinking worst case that I might be there for 14 days if I was positive. To deal with it mentally was challenging – I was preparing myself for the worst. However, after getting the two negative results, I just tried to re-focus and get back in my normal routine.”Pretorius returned to the side to top-score with 90, opening the batting, and then took 1 for 40 in his nine overs as the Wolves fell to a four-wicket loss with two balls to spare. The series continues with the third 50-over fixture on Tuesday.

Each MLB Wild-Card Contender’s X-Factor for the Playoff Chase

When MLB expanded its playoff format to 12 teams in 2022, the hope was that it would create a more compelling final few weeks of the season. Four years in, it seems that mission was accomplished.

With just over a month to play, the races for each league’s three wild-card spots are far from settled. In the American League, five teams are within three games of the final bid. In the National League, the Cubs, Padres and Mets are fighting to fend off the Reds, who are just a game back. As each club jockeys for position, the margins will be thin in determining who makes it to October and who gets left out in the cold.

The household names will need to produce during this crucial time, of course, but so too will the x-factors and complimentary pieces. With a focus on the latter, here’s a pick for who will be each wild-card contender’s key difference maker for the stretch run.

New York Yankees

Current standing: 69–57, AL East 4 GB, AL wild-card 4 GU on fourth place
X-factor: SP Cam Schlittler

The rookie has impressed during his first two months in The Show, allowing no more than three runs in any of his first seven starts. Schlittler was considered among the Yankees’ top pitching prospects entering the season and is coming off his best outing when he threw 6 2/3 shutout innings against the Rays on Wednesday, giving up just one hit while striking out eight. Given Max Fried’s continued struggles, New York can use all the quality starts it can get down the stretch, and Schlittler is proving he can provide them.

Boston Red Sox

Current standing: 68–59, AL East 5.5 GB, AL wild-card 2.5 GU on fourth place
X-factor: SP Dustin May

Dustin May has allowed just one home run in 15 2/3 innings for the Red Sox. / Troy Taormina-Imagn Images

May was squeezed out of the Dodgers’ rotation at the deadline, but so far he’s proven to be just what the doctor ordered in Boston. In three outings with his new squad, the righthander has two quality starts and a 2.87 ERA, with 17 strikeouts and just four walks. The Red Sox have been searching for a stable fifth starter for a while now, and May has filled that need with aplomb. Settling on three or four starters for a postseason series might be a more complicated problem, but it will be a welcome one if Boston can get there, and May is critical to accomplishing that goal.

Seattle Mariners

Current standing: 68–60, AL West 1.5 GB, AL wild-card 2 GU on fourth place
X-factor: DH Jorge Polanco

Early on this season, Polanco was a pleasant surprise for Mariners fans who might have been frustrated with the team’s relatively quiet offseason. A scalding hot April gave way to an ice cold May and June, but the veteran picked things up in July. Now, Polanco is struggling again, batting .196/.255/.275 in August. Seattle added reinforcements at the deadline in Eugenio Suárez and Josh Naylor, but that hasn’t come at the expense of Polanco’s playing time. He’s started 14 of the team’s 17 games this month, so the Mariners clearly prefer to see him hit his way out of his slump rather than turn to a replacement player. If Polanco can rediscover his earlier form, it will make a suddenly formidable Seattle lineup that much deeper.

Kansas City Royals

Current standing: 66–62, AL Central 9.5 GB, AL wild-card 2 GB
X-factor: SP Ryan Bergert

Kansas City did well in adding Bergert and pitcher Stephen Kolek in exchange for backup catcher Freddy Fermin at the deadline. The Royals slotted Bergert directly into their rotation, and he’s put up a 2.70 ERA through three starts, pitching into the sixth inning in all three. Those contributions will need to continue if Kansas City wants to remain within striking distance of the final wild-card spot, particularly in the wake of Kris Bubic’s season-ending shoulder injury.

Cleveland Guardians

Current standing: 64–62, AL Central 10.5 GB, AL wild-card 3 GB
X-factor: 1B Kyle Manzardo

Manzardo picked a great time to go on his best tear of the season, catching fire at the plate to help prop up Cleveland’s otherwise subpar offense. Over his last 28 games, Manzardo is batting .287/.396/.598 with eight homers and 22 RBIs, and the Guardians are 16–12 during that span. Perennial MVP candidate José Ramírez continues to do his part, but he’ll need players like Manzardo to chip in and give the offense more firepower.

Chicago Cubs

Current standing: 73–55, NL Central 7 GB, NL wild-card 6 GU on fourth place
X-factor: 3B Matt Shaw

Matt Shaw has rebounded from a slow start to his rookie season. / Patrick Gorski-Imagn Images

The once-feared Cubs lineup has picked a bad time to go quiet. Through the All-Star break, Chicago ranked second in the majors in runs scored. Since then, the Cubs rank 26th in runs, 28th in on-base percentage and 28th in batting average. Shaw has been the exception, a silver lining that’s almost single-handedly kept the offense from going under. During the second half, the 2023 first-round pick is batting .302/.344/.721 with nine home runs, four stolen bases and 16 extra-base hits in 30 games. After a slow start to his rookie season, the third baseman has found his power stroke, helping pick up the slack for slumping stars Kyle Tucker, Pete Crow-Armstrong and Dansby Swanson.

San Diego Padres

Current standing: 72–56, NL West 1 GB, NL wild-card 5 GU on fourth place
X-factor: SP JP Sears

Amid San Diego’s busy trade trendline, you’d be forgiven for overlooking Sears’s inclusion in the deal that sent flame-throwing closer Mason Miller to the Padres in exchange for a package that included top prospect Leo De Vries. Sears is much more than just a throw-in, though, and will likely be counted on to log crucial innings for an injury-starved rotation that’s already seen Michael King land back on the IL. Sears has made just two starts with San Diego and has been up and down from the minors, but it’s a safe bet that the Padres will need him to deliver in the coming weeks. He logged six innings in Wednesday’s 8–1 win over the Giants.

New York Mets

Current standing: 67–60, NL East 7 GB, NL wild-card 0.5 GU on fourth place
X-factor: 2B/3B Brett Baty

Mets fans have had a tumultuous relationship with Baty, a 2019 first-round pick and former top prospect who, prior to this year, never quite panned out. Now in his fourth big-league season and still just 25, he’s beginning to look like the everyday contributor the club hoped he’d develop into. Baty has hit .284/.357/.541 since the All-Star break to become a productive bat at the bottom of the lineup. New York has several issues plaguing its roster lately—namely pitching—so there are plenty of candidates to pick for this spot, but Baty can do the team a huge favor by maintaining this form for the next month.

Cincinnati Reds

Current standing: 67–61, NL Central 13 GB, NL wild-card 0.5 GB
X-factor: DH Miguel Andújar

The Reds landed Andújar in a deadline deal with the A’s that didn’t grab many headlines, but the well-traveled slugger has quickly made himself right at home on his fourth team in as many years. Since arriving in Cincinnati, Andújar has started 13 of 17 games (mostly at DH) and raked, batting .383/.442/.660 while predominantly hitting out of the cleanup spot. Reds pitchers have put up the league’s third-lowest ERA (3.39) since the All-Star break, and if their below-average offense can get this big of a boost from Andujar down the stretch, it might be enough to run down the teams ahead of them.

Relaxed Rohit Sharma eases himself into Wankhede gig

Hardik Pandya was not at Mumbai Indians’ optional training on Sunday, but there was no hint of any unease in the camp over the captaincy switch

Moody: Mumbai need to start winning to silence Hardik criticism

Walking into the Wankhede Stadium on Saturday didn’t feel too different. The venue was gearing up for its first match of IPL 2024. There was an air of busy chaos all around. Banners and billboards bearing names of stands and various sponsors were all being put up all along the periphery. Huge trucks were parked, ready to unload food and beverages for match day. The stadium’s dull blue exterior had given way to the more vibrant blue of Mumbai Indians.Once you passed security and got inside the compound, you saw pillars covered with huge placards of players – Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya… And the thing is, looking at the décor, there was no way someone not in the know would have guessed there has been a change in captaincy for Mumbai. Even the digital billboard inside the stadium – installed next to the big screens square of the strip – flashed a picture of Rohit standing with his hands on his hips.Related

Mumbai have built a fan-base – MI Paltan – that has backed the team to the hilt. But perhaps at no time before in IPL history have their fans felt as divided as when heading into IPL 2024. The transition was smooth when Mumbai had to move on from Sachin Tendulkar – both as a captain and a player – an icon for whom special cheers can still be heard around the Wankhede Stadium. But when Hardik was named captain heading into this season, replacing Rohit, the struggled to come to grips with it. The result? Hardik was booed in their first two games this season in Ahmedabad and Hyderabad – both of which Mumbai lost.So now the question that seems to be on everyone’s lips is: how will the fans greet the five-time champions and their new captain on Monday, when they take on Rajasthan Royals. On Sunday, Hardik – and Bumrah – was not at Mumbai’s optional training session. Rohit was there but he did not bat. He has been in fair touch, with scores of 43 off 29 and 26 off 12 in the first two outings. So Sunday seemed more about interacting with players from both sides, and perhaps soaking in the feeling of a venue where he has grown up playing most of his cricket. After Mumbai’s nets started, he stood near the MCA Pavilion and spoke intently, at various points, to Dewald Brevis, Nehal Wadhera and Naman Dhir. Tim David and later Dhir had stints in the nets, and Yashasvi Jaiswal, Riyan Parag and Shimron Hetmyer from the Royals camp, all regularly depositing the ball into the vacant stands at the media end. None of the batting held Rohit’s attention though. On IPL 2024’s opening night, a packed Motera was not too kind to Hardik Pandya, and the same continued in Hyderabad days later•BCCIHe had a conversation with Piyush Chawla, while he waited for his turn to bat, and then head coach Mark Boucher too. The most significant training Rohit put himself through was ten minutes of sprinting near the square boundary below the Sunil Gavaskar Pavilion. When Rohit met Royals’ Sanju Samson and Yuzvendra Chahal, he sported a big grin. If there were tensions over the captaincy switch, they certainly were not visible. Rohit seemed as relaxed and focused as he is heading into any match – and the same could be said of the entire Mumbai contingent present. How Hardik’s reception will be when the fans get here is anybody’s guess, but on match eve he found support in opposition pace spearhead Trent Boult.”There are a lot of passionate fans in this country and speaking of Hardik, specifically, he is one of my favourite Indian cricketers and I do not think the booing will hold out for too long,” Boult said at the pre-match press conference. “I am sure, he is one of those guys who can put it aside and focus on the job.”This season was supposed to be a homecoming for Hardik, who first rose to prominence with Mumbai in IPL 2015. But the road home has so far been anything but smooth. It goes without saying, a win on Sunday could go a long way in changing it all.

VIDEO: Lionel Messi caught on camera barely getting involved in wild Inter Miami MLS Cup celebrations as co-owner Sir David Beckham leads conga line at afterparty

Lionel Messi helped to inspire Inter Miami to a historic MLS Cup triumph, but the Argentine GOAT was not really in a party mood when wild post-match celebrations were taken in. Club co-owner Sir David Beckham formed part of those, as he led a conga line, but Messi – who has enhanced his status as the most decorated player of all-time – looked like he would rather be anywhere else in the world.

Historic win: Inter Miami land MLS Cup in 2025

The Herons have savoured MLS Cup glory for the first time, with impressive progress being made over the course of five years since becoming another expansion franchise in 2020. Acquiring eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi in 2023 represented a notable coup for the club.

He helped them to Leagues Cup success a matter of weeks after arriving in South Florida, before claiming the Supporters’ Shield in record-breaking style last season. Inter Miami have now landed the ultimate prize, with Vancouver being seen off in the 2025 MLS Cup final.

How many trophies has Messi won?

The contest took place at Chase Stadium, as the Herons prepare to bid farewell to that venue and move into a new purpose-built home for 2026. They delivered the perfect send-off when overcoming Thomas Muller and the Whitecaps.

Messi was not among the goals in a 3-1 win over Vancouver, but delivered Golden Boot-winning exploits during the regular season – finding the target on 43 occasions across all competitions.

The former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain playmaker now has 47 major titles to his name. He was full of smiles after hoisting the MLS Cup aloft as captain of Inter Miami. Beckham was on hand – alongside wife Victoria – to join in with those celebrations.

The party carried on long after confetti had been cleared from the field, with Inter Miami’s squad getting the chance to let their hair down alongside friends and family. Beckham was front and centre again, with the Manchester United and England legend leading players in a conga as drinks flowed.

Messi was dragged into that performance, seemingly against his wishes. The evergreen 38-year-old looked less than impressed at being forced to parade alongside Sergio Busquets and Rodrigo De Paul.

While not really being in the party spirit, Messi will be back for more with Inter Miami next season. He has committed to a new three-year contract that will take him through 2028. The all-time great also has a World Cup title defence with Argentina on his agenda, with the expectation being that he will form part of the Albiceleste’s plans for the major tournament that is heading to the United States, Canada and Mexico next summer.

Wellington to Wankhede: How Rachin Ravindra has made himself cricket's new poster boy

He’s a skilful disruptor, and a bit of a cricket tragic, who took the 2023 World Cup by storm. Could the IPL be next?

Deivarayan Muthu and Alagappan Muthu15-Dec-20232:43

Rachin Ravindra on IPL hopes: ‘There are no guarantees’

On his first day off in two months, in a city that offers everything for everyone – a 225-hectare wildlife sanctuary, award-winning restaurants and bars, sprawling museums and a thriving film hub – guess what Rachin Ravindra did?”I managed to squeeze in a little net.” He laughs. So he knows it is utterly ridiculous. “I enjoy it. Sometimes it can be a bit therapeutic or it’s always nice to have something to work towards. And I’ve done it from a very young age, so that helps me a lot. You get into your space and really enjoy what you do and soak it all in.” Poor Wellington. It never even had a chance.Earlier this year, the 24-year-old left-hander made as many runs as any New Zealander has ever done in a single edition of the men’s ODI World Cup. He outdid 142 of 143 batters at scoring against spin, and went for an aggressive shot roughly once every six balls. He still ended up with a control percentage of 86. Ravindra also likes stuffing raw fish into his team-mates’ kit bags and used to cry when it rained because it meant he couldn’t go outside and play.Related

“I was only a kid back then (laughs). These are definitely things I won’t do now.”The 2024 IPL auction will take place on December 19 while Ravindra prepares to put on his black cap and go out to face Bangladesh in an ODI in Nelson. He has set his base price at INR 50 lakh (USD 60,000 approx.) – looks like he wants to be picked over striking it rich – and has actively tried to forget all about it.”It’s external noise. People can speculate all they want and they’re allowed to be excited about potential players going to the IPL teams they support and that’s sport. As a kid, I enjoyed watching my heroes play for the team I supported not just in cricket but also football and basketball. You get attached and I completely understand. It’s not rocket science; whatever happens will happen. What’s important right now is the Bangladesh one-day series in front of me, so I’m getting prepared for that.”Most IPL teams have fairly settled top-order options so they might not be in a tearing hurry to bring in someone who averages 16 and strikes at 123 over a T20 career that spans a mere 53 matches. But there are intangibles to consider here, notably how Ravindra has always risen to a challenge. Here is Sriram Krishnamurthy, who works with Chennai Super Kings in their grassroots programme, talking all about it.

“I remember it very vividly. I was a bit sick and I wasn’t feeling as good as I’d want to physically. And that almost was quite good because it took the edge off the cricket, you know.”Rachin Ravindra on his debut, at 15, for Wellington Under-19s

“I had been appointed Wellington’s Under-19 coach and I hadn’t really had a look at this boy. But there had been talk about him, about how he could be a very good player in the future. To be honest, at that stage, there was a bit more hype around his bowling. So, I was just curious to see who this player is and I happened to watch him one day and… it was evident what people were saying.””When we originally selected Rachin for the Wellington Under-19 team, it was the year of the 2016 Under-19 World Cup in Bangladesh and it was a strategic move. We knew that this boy was young and perhaps might not make it to the New Zealand Under-19 team. However, we also knew if he’s able to show his promise through performances, there’s an outside chance he could be picked. I had this conversation with him when he was just 15.”The pull brought Rachin Ravindra plenty of success at the 2023 World Cup•ICC/Getty ImagesRavindra was a little nervous about making his debut. But help arrived, in unusual fashion. “I remember it very vividly,” he says, “I was a bit sick and I wasn’t feeling as good as I’d want to physically. And that almost was quite good because it took the edge off the cricket, you know. You’re more worried about the sickness rather than actually the game and what’s happening. So you’re mind’s somewhere else which was quite nice and you’re only watching the ball. All the other external things didn’t matter.”He hit a century that day. “I still remember the way I got out. It was a sweep shot to a legspinner. I didn’t play a sweep shot through the whole innings and all of a sudden I played the sweep and was out lbw. But it gave me the confidence at that age. When you’re 15 and competing with guys who are 18-19, who are bigger or stronger, you put yourself in that situation and you have the confidence to perform. The most fun I’ve ever had was during the years Sri was coaching. It was just unbelievable.”Ravindra did go to that Under-19 World Cup in 2016 and he came back as New Zealand’s joint-highest wicket-taker. He was realising he was made for this. Two years later, he levelled up again, to the point that he found himself in the UAE, competing with established international players like BJ Watling and Mohammad Rizwan. These experiences built his self-belief and he began charging up the learning curve so hard it started to look like a straight line.”I’ve seen Rachin facing big boys right from when he was young,” Krishnamurthy says. “When I was the batting coach of NZ A, we went to play against Pakistan and their bowlers are very skilful. My memories don’t come through with regards to who the bowlers were at the time. But he made a couple of fifties in the four-day games. I’ve seen him do this against quality oppositions from when he was very young and part of that goes back to the person he is. He is not going to get overawed by who is bowling to him. What he’s doing is he’s enjoying himself.”If the IPL is about talent meeting opportunity, Ravindra is about seizing opportunity at every turn, which is how he has gone from being little more than a dream; a future that even New Zealand thought was still some way off to capturing the imagination of cricket fans all over the world right here, right now.Picture the Wankhede. The crowd there serenading him. They already know the tune. Just need to change one syllable. The Eden Gardens could use him too. Kolkata Knight Riders had the fewest fifty-plus scores by openers in IPL 2023. The same metric, applied to No. 3s, puts Sunrisers Hyderabad at the bottom of the table. In the three times those two teams have won the IPL, they had a top-order batter performing at the peak of his powers. Ravindra has enough potential to tick that box.

Being able to take calculated risks like that and seeing them through to the desired result elevates Rachin Ravindra from a simple accumulator to a skilful disruptor and isn’t that the profile of player who makes T20 franchises break the bank?

“Rachin’s set-up is really simple,” Krishnamurthy says. “He doesn’t do these trigger movements and stays as still as he can. It allows him to watch the ball hard. When we speak about batters, we speak about intent but that comes naturally to Rachin. Wanting to play in a positive manner is ingrained in him. The conscious effort from him is to watch the ball hard. So he stays as still as possible.””His natural strength is to play the ball late. He has a good back-foot game. Always did. He can cut the ball and is a very good puller. He also has this knack of playing the square-drive on the up. He has always showed that he can play balls that are short or short-of-a-good-length very well. From there, what he had to do was make himself more rounded and this World Cup showed he’s done that.”The most striking image of Ravindra at the crease as he made 578 runs in 10 ODIs across October and November is the front foot drive, probably through the covers. He opted for it a total of 135 times and gained 115 runs but it was all a ruse. By allowing himself to be a little more forceful when he pushed forward, he tricked bowlers into making mistakes they didn’t even know were mistakes and promptly took them for all they were worth. You know, like Danny Ocean, but with better hair. Eighty-three of Ravindra’s runs came via the pull shot. He only had 33 chances to unleash it but it still yielded a third of his boundaries (14 of 42).Being able to take calculated risks like that and seeing them through to the desired result elevates him from a simple accumulator to a skilful disruptor and isn’t that the profile of player who makes T20 franchises break the bank?

Kuldeep Yadav: 'I didn't understand what length to bowl against England'

“There was no assistance for spin on the pitch, so I didn’t get the desired results,” said the India wristspinner

ESPNcricinfo staff01-Apr-2021It has been a forgettable few months for Kuldeep Yadav. After a poor stint at the IPL with Kolkata Knight Riders last year where he played just five matches and picked up only one wicket, he was mostly relegated to the bench for India’s tour of Australia, as well as the home series against England. After being sidelined for the entire five-match T20I series against England which India won 3-2, Yadav eventually got his chance in the ODIs, being selected for the first two matches. However, he once again struggled to make an impact, going wicketless and conceding 152 runs across the two games.Yadav had a particularly torrid time against Ben Stokes in the second ODI in Pune, conceding 20 runs in an over, including three consecutive sixes because he “didn’t understand what length to bowl” and “didn’t have any assistance on the pitch”. It allowed England to chase down a target of 337 inside 44 overs.Yadav admitted that rust was an issue with his performances, but that he is also “not at all worried” about what the future holds.”If you’re playing regularly, you get an idea about the length and can quickly identify what length to bowl,” Yadav told . “But when you’re playing with breaks, the length may sometimes be a little up or short. If I work hard on my lengths, it will help me bowl better.Related

  • Kuldeep Yadav: 'I have seen failure. I feel I understand things better now'

“The first game was very important as I was playing after a long time. I didn’t get into a good rhythm in that match. Had I been playing regularly, rhythm would not have been an issue. I made a good comeback after the first over [conceding 13 runs]. In the second game, I bowled better. It’s just that there was no assistance for spin on the pitch, so I didn’t get the desired results. On flat pitches, length is crucial. It was difficult for spinners in the ODIs, all went for runs.”Yadav also dismissed talk that batsmen had him “figured out”, insisting that his main job was “to keep improving” and not focus on anything else.”I don’t pay attention to all this talk. It’s important that I keep improving my skills and be as accurate as possible. If you’re playing regularly, batsmen tend to read you. If they are getting comfortable playing me, then my job as a bowler is to keep improving. And that’s why I look to add or change a few things every time.”Despite all the analysis, batsmen still find ways to score runs and bowlers still find different methods to take wickets. There are other factors, too, like form, rhythm and confidence. If [your] confidence is high, you’ll start taking wickets and people will again start talking good things about you.”My job is to be ready whenever the opportunity arises. The team management has always communicated to me the reason why I wasn’t getting a place in the XI. They have always backed me and I am not at all worried. I keep working hard in training sessions and do whatever the team needs.”

Wolves in contact for new manager Abel Ferreira as Jeff Shi receives reply

Wolves have made an enquiry for Palmeiras manager Abel Ferreira, with executive chairman Jeff Shi receiving a reply.

Wolves to “take time” in new manager search

The Old Gold parted ways with Vitor Pereira on Sunday following their eighth Premier League defeat of the season and are no further down the line in regards appointing a long-term replacement.

David Ornstein has revealed that Wolves didn’t begin the process for a new manager until Pereira was sacked after the 3-0 loss at Fulham, despite their struggles all season.

“I think they wanted to give Vitor Pereira as long as possible. And therefore, they didn’t start a process to replace him before he was actually sacked.

“Once he was, the work began in earnest, or maybe Saturday night after the Fulham defeat, into Sunday, phone calls were starting to be made to express interest in a number of candidates, including Gary O’Neil.”

It looked as if Gary O’Neil was going to return to Molineux, however, he walked away from talks to leave the club at square one.

Under-21s head coach, James Collins, and under-18s head coach, Richard Walker, are in interim charge ahead of Saturday’s trip to Chelsea.

Sam Allardyce keen on taking Molineux job but reveals what Wolves are after

It has been claimed that Wolves “want to take time” to find the right man after O’Neil’s move fell through and Rob Edwards distanced himself from the vacancy.

A leadership group involving Shi and Matt Jackson are involved in the managerial process, whereas Wolves are also being influenced by Jorge Mendes in the background.

The new Nuno Santo: "World-class" manager wants to hold talks with Wolves

Now, a new name has emerged with Wolves even making contact over a deal.

Wolves make Abel Ferreira approach

According to reports from ESPN Brazil, Wolves have made an enquiry over a move for Palmeiras boss Ferreira.

The Portuguese manager was wanted by Nottingham Forest following Nuno Espirito Santo’s exit and was also linked with Chelsea back in 2023.

However, following the latest move from Molineux chiefs, Ferreira has rejected Wolves’ offer as he is focused on the CONMEBOL Libertadores final and the Brazilian Championship with Palmeiras.

A two-time Brazil league winner with his current employers, Ferreira plays a 4-2-3-1 manager and has won 6-0 on four separate occasions.

Two of those came with Palmeiras and the other two in Portugal when he was in charge of Braga, and as can be seen, the 46-year-old has plenty of managerial experience at a relatively young age.

Unfortunately for Shi and co, a move to Wolves for Ferreira doesn’t look like it is on the cards in 2025, leaving Wolves to look elsewhere once again.

MLB Playoff Clinching Scenarios: What's at Stake for Each Team on Final Day

One-hundred and sixty-one games later, it all comes down to this.

After a drama-filled week of heartbreaking eliminations and champagne-popping celebrations, there is still plenty to be decided on Sunday, the final day of the 2025 MLB regular season.

In the National League, two teams remain jockeying for one final playoff spot. Over in the American League, the AL Central and AL East divisions have yet to crown a champion, and there is playoff seeding up for grabs throughout the bracket.

Here's a breakdown of everything each team is playing for on the final day of the 2025 regular season:

American LeagueToronto Blue Jays (93-68)

What's at stake: AL East title; No. 1 seed
The skinny: Toronto owns the tiebreaker over the Yankees, so the Blue Jays will be crowned AL East champs on Sunday (and secure the No. 1 seed in the AL) with either a win over the Rays or a New York loss to the Orioles. If Sunday doesn't go their way, the Blue Jays will be the top wild-card team in the AL as the No. 4 seed.

Seattle Mariners (90-71)

What's at stake: Nothing.
The skinny: Seattle clinched its first division title since 2001 earlier this week, so there's nothing to play for on Sunday. The Mariners will be the No. 2 seed in the AL no matter what happens. It is worth watching to see if Cal Raleigh—sitting with 60 homers on the year—tries to chase Aaron Judge's AL record of 62 homers on the final day of the regular season.

Cleveland Guardians (87-74)

What's at stake: AL Central title
The skinny: The Guardians clinched a postseason berth Saturday in the ultimate "Guards Ball" way—on a walk-off hit by pitch in the ninth inning. Cleveland, which owns the tiebreaker over the Tigers, can claim its third AL Central title in the last four years on Sunday with either a win over the Rangers or a Detroit loss to the Red Sox. If Cleveland loses out on the division title, the Guardians would be locked into the final wild-card spot (No. 6 seed) because they lost the tiebreaker to Boston.

New York Yankees (93-69)

What's at stake: AL East title; No. 1 seed
The skinny: New York will be chasing a division title and a chance for home-field advantage and a first-round bye on the final day of the regular season. To do so, the Yankees will need to beat the Orioles combined with the Blue Jays falling to the Rays.

Boston Red Sox (88-73)

What's at stake: Wild-card seeding
The skinny: Boston, already having clinched a wild-card spot earlier this week, is postseason bound. But the Red Sox could either grab the No. 5 or No. 6 seed based on Sunday's results. The Red Sox own the tiebreaker over the Guardians but would lose the tiebreaker to Detroit. If Boston loses to the Tigers on Sunday and the Guardians beat the Rangers, the Red Sox would slide to the No. 6 seed. If any other scenario happens, the Red Sox will be the No. 5 seed in the AL.

Detroit Tigers (87-74)

What's at stake: AL Central title
The skinny: Take a sigh of relief, Detroit. The Tigers were on the brink of a historic collapse all week before clinching a postseason berth on Saturday. They could win the AL Central on Sunday with a win over the Red Sox combined with the Guardians losing to Texas. If Detroit beats the Red Sox and the Guardians take down the Rangers, the Tigers would be the No. 5 seed. If the Tigers lose on Sunday, they'll claim the No. 6 seed and final wild-card spot in the AL.

National LeagueMilwaukee Brewers (96-65)

What's at stake: Nada.
The skinny: Fire up the tailgate grill and relax, Brewers fans. For the first time since 1982, Milwaukee will finish the season with the best record in the big leagues, meaning the Brewers will have home-field advantage at American Family Field through the World Series. Milwaukee can play spoiler on Sunday, however, if they'd like to send the division rival Reds packing.

Philadelphia Phillies (95-66)

What's at stake: Not a thing.
The skinny: The Phillies had a chance at the NL's top seed before losing to the lowly Twins on Saturday night. That loss locked Philadelphia into the No. 2 seed, which also comes with a first-round bye. We'll see you in the NLDS, Phillie Phanatic.

Los Angeles Dodgers (92-69)

What's at stake: Nothing.
The skinny: Like the Brewers and Phillies, the Dodgers don't have anything to play for on Sunday. The NL West champs will be the No. 3 seed in the postseason and will be preparing to host a wild-card round at Dodger Stadium. There is some interesting baseball to watch for Dodgers fans on Sunday, however, to see if either the Reds or Mets will claim the final wild-card spot for a chance to play Los Angeles.

Chicago Cubs (91-70)

What's at stake: Nothing.
The skinny: The Cubs clinched the top NL wild-card spot on Saturday, so they'll host the Padres in the best-of-three first round of the playoffs at Wrigley Field. Aside from the postseason tilt in 2020 that had no fans in attendance, the last playoff game hosted at the "Friendly Confines" was the Cubs' 2-1 loss to the Rockies in the 2018 wild-card game. Should be fun.

San Diego Padres (89-72)

What's at stake: Nothing.
The skinny: As mentioned above, the Padres will be catching a flight to Chicago to open up the wild-card round at Wrigley Field on Tuesday.

Cincinnati Reds (83-78)

What's at stake: Playoff spot.
The skinny: The Reds control their own destiny. A win over the rival Brewers, and Cincinnati is heading to the playoffs for the first time since 2020. It's that simple. If they lose to the Brewers, the Reds will still get in if the Mets lose to the Marlins. But if the Reds lose to Milwaukee and the Mets beat Miami, Cincinnati will be packing its bags for Cancún.

New York Mets (83-78)

What's at stake: Playoff spot.
The skinny: Missing the playoffs would be a disaster for Steve Cohen's $341 million payroll. But that has a decent chance of happening Sunday. The only way the Mets get into the playoffs is with a win over the Marlins combined with the Reds losing to the Brewers. Gulp.
