No more excuses: Alexander Isak must start showing why Liverpool spent £125m to sign star striker

After the October international break, Arne Slot conceded that there could be no more excuses as far as Alexander Isak was concerned. "Fitness-wise, he is close to the level he should be," the Dutch coach acknowledged ahead of Liverpool's meeting with Manchester United at Anfield, "and we can judge him in a fair way from now on." Just three weeks later, though, Slot was back pleading for patience with the most expensive player in British football history.

"I know that I said that his pre-season had ended, and that it was time for us to see where he is, but I have to go back on those words," the Reds boss told reporters on November 7. "Because if you are only doing rehab for three weeks, that doesn't bring you back to the level you were at."

Isak should be there now, though. And he really needs to be, too, because nearly three months after his arrival at Anfield, the Sweden striker is still looking like a player that Liverpool didn't necessarily need to sign – and certainly not for £125 million ($163m).

Getty Images SportThe striking striker

Isak leaving Newcastle for Liverpool was the story of the summer, a transfer that was as acrimonious as it was protracted. Everyone had an opinion on it – but not everyone had "the whole picture", according to the Swede.

"I can't control everything that is said or written," Isak said of the bitter backlash to his successful strike. "There is a lot to discuss, and it can be discussed for a long time. But it has been educational, and I'm happy with the final result. I'm proud to be a Liverpool player. I don't want to go into details or talk about that situation too much. It is a closed chapter, but I have never had any problems."

Unfortunately for Isak, Liverpool and indeed Sweden, he's had plenty of problems since forcing through his move to Merseyside.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportFitness issues

During his first interview with his new club, Isak admitted that he wasn't entirely sure when he would be physically capable of making his Liverpool debut. "I've had a tricky summer," he said – which was obviously putting it mildly.

Because of his refusal to even participate in Newcastle's pre-season friendlies, let alone their opening three Premier League fixtures (one of which was against the reigning champions), Isak joined Liverpool without having played a single second of football for more than three months. Their shared "ambition" was for the forward to feature in the first Premier League game after the September international break, against Burnley, but even though he saw 18 minutes of action in Sweden's World Cup qualifier in Kosovo, Slot decided against risking Isak at Turf Moor.

"We got him from Newcastle in a state where you could say his pre-season was only going to start then," the Dutchman told reporters after Liverpool's 1-0 win on September 14. "He needs proper minutes of training before he has a certain base, let alone for him to play twice in three days. So, that's what we do, we try to prepare players for the beginning of the season once a week, and then we try to do more and more and more before we go into the rhythm of two games a week, so that they are ready for that schedule."

Getty ImagesSurprisingly positive debut

Despite adopting a wisely cautious approach with Isak, Slot threw him straight into the starting line-up for Liverpool's Champions League opener against Atletico Madrid four days later and even the manager was taken aback by how well it went.

"I wasn't surprised by his quality, as we know all about that, but I was positively surprised by how fit Alexander was during his 60 minutes," Slot told . "But that maybe tells you that it might be different to sign a 20-year-old from a different league than a 25-year-old used to playing in the Premier League.

"Although he only trained for two weeks, he has so many games under his belt [at the highest level]. One of the things you need if you want to compete for the Premier League and the cups is mentality, fitness and quality and, today, we saw all of that."

However, if Slot thought that Isak was going to get back up to speed quicker than expected, he would be sorely mistaken.

Getty Images Sport'Unprofessional' and 'naive'

Isak may have opened his Liverpool account with a characteristically neat finish in the Carabao Cup win over Southampton on September 23, but that remains his only goal of the season so far, and that's in spite of the fact that he started three consecutive Premier League games between September 27 and October 19 – all of which were lost.

The 26-year-old may have registered an assist in the 2-1 defeat at Chelsea on October 4, but it was an attempt to control the ball for himself rather than an intentional lay-off for goal-scorer Cody Gakpo. The sad fact of the matter was that in complete contrast to fellow forward Hugo Ekitike, who had hit the ground running after his summer switch from Eintracht Frankfurt, Isak still looked miles off the pace of the Premier League. Unsurprisingly, sympathy was in short supply – and not just on Tyneside.

"It was unprofessional and naive not just to down tools, but to sacrifice his match fitness for whoever he was going to play for," former Liverpool attacker Don Hutchison told . "I think he’s been managed and advised really badly by his agent all summer, but it comes down to the player, ultimately. He’s under contract with Newcastle, he owes them fitness and professionalism.

"Bigger picture, if you end up at Liverpool, you have to [be ready to] hit the ground running. Now he's playing catch-up and it's because of how he behaved."

Chelsea staff now hailing fringe player who's slipped under Maresca's radar

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has a plethora of star players in his squad, and some have been reduced to fewer minutes than they’d like.

BlueCo are spearheading another major reshuffle of the squad, and perhaps even more so this summer, with the expectation being that Chelsea are poised to offload many more squad members as new players fill their spaces.

Carney Chukwuemeka, Axel Disasi, Raheem Sterling, Ben Chilwell, Christopher Nkunku, Nicolas Jackson and Alfie Gilchrist could all still leave Stamford Bridge before the summer transfer deadline on September 1, as UEFA pressure Chelsea to produce a positive transfer balance by next month.

The aforementioned seven could follow a host of players out the door, with Kepa Arrizabalaga, Basir Humphreys, Noni Madueke, Marcus Bettinelli, Mathis Amougou, Djordje Petrovic, João Félix, Ishe Samuels-Smith, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Armando Broja and Lesley Ugochukwu parting company permanently.

For most of a portion of this window, defender Benoit Badiashile has also been linked with exit door, but the Frenchman’s future has proved more complicated.

While Badiashile isn’t exactly at the forefront of Maresca’s plans, starting just three Premier League games last season, he did play in all but two games of their Conference League campaign.

The 24-year-old was a firm regular of their ‘B team’ last term, so to speak, but remains behind the likes of Wesley Fofana, Trevoh Chalobah and Levi Colwill in the pecking order.

Unfortunately for Maresca, Colwill is now set to miss most of the new campaign after damaging his ACL in training, with Chelsea thought to be exploring new centre-back options in the transfer market as a result.

Chelsea could even sign a new defender on an emergency loan, according to some reports, but any deal for the right player will be hard to do considering how late it is in the window.

They also remain in ongoing talks to sign both Xavi Simons and Alejandro Garnacho respectively, and bringing in the attacking duo would take Chelsea’s summer spending to well past the £300 million mark.

Maresca could well be forced to consider more internal solutions to their centre-back shortage, with Badiashile now receiving plenty of support at Cobham.

Chelsea defender Benoit Badiashile praised by staff behind-the-scenes

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, speaking on the London is Blue podcast this week, the former AS Monaco man is earning real admiration from members of the Chelsea staff.

Those within the club are convinced that Badiashile can develop into a consistent and reliable player for Chelsea, with Maresca told to take note of the ex-Ligue 1 star as a potential option – even if he’s currently injured himself right now.

Badiashile is expected back around September, though, so he could soon come in as cover for Colwill if Maresca opts to head in that direction.

In another interview on Playback, Jacobs also revealed that Badiashile has a fierce work ethic, with there being a growing sense that his signing has “slipped under the radar”.

'Karma' – Mario Balotelli appears to take X-rated swipe at 'selfish' Patrick Vieira after Arsenal legend is sacked by Genoa

Outspoken Mario Balotelli appears to have taken an X-rated swipe at Patrick Vieira after seeing the Arsenal legend relieved of his duties as manager of Genoa. Italy international Balotelli had found himself frozen out by a one-time team-mate and has taken aim at those that he considers to have acted in a “selfish” manner, with the enigmatic striker pointing out that “Karma is a b*tch”.

Serie A woe: Why Vieira was sacked by Genoa

World Cup winner Vieira spent 12 months at the helm with Genoa, having been appointed in November 2024. He picked up just 10 wins from his 37 games in charge, with the club enduring their worst-ever start to a Serie A campaign in 2025-26.

Genoa sit rock-bottom of the Italian top-flight with just three points to their name from nine fixtures. Vieira found himself falling under mounting pressure as a result, with the decision eventually taken for a mutual parting of ways.

AdvertisementGOAL/GettyBalotelli takes aim at Vieira & Co in social media blast

Ex-Manchester City and Liverpool striker Balotelli is among those have welcomed a change in the dugout, with the 35-year-old watching on from afar after becoming a free agent in the summer of 2025. Taking to social media, the mercurial frontman said: “Karma is a b*tch”.

Balotelli went on to add, in an apparent dig at Vieira and his coaching team: “Now Genoa can finally focus on people who truly love the environment, the fans and the crest, and who deeply believe in the idea and the fact that Genoa deserves to be at the top. The great work done by Gilardino and Zangrillo has not been lost.”

After making a point of tagging Alberto Zangrillo, Alberto Gilardino and Vieira in his post, Balotelli continued: “It was just exploited selfishly and badly by those who came after, taking advantage of what they had built with hard work, respect and passion. They exploited the immense work of Gilardino and Zangrillo, their commitment and dedication to these colours, without really understanding their value. Now let’s focus on Genoa and the Genoese! Come on Genoa! Come on guys! I believed in you and I still do.”

What is it like to manage Balotelli? Vieira explains

Balotelli linked up with Genoa in October 2024, shortly before Gilardino was replaced by Vieira. He had previously played alongside the iconic Frenchman at Manchester City and Inter. The pair also worked together in Ligue 1 at Nice.

Balotelli failed to find the target through 10 appearances during that forgettable stint in 2018, having reportedly missed Vieira’s first training session.

Vieira said at the time of trying to handle a combustible character: “When it comes to Mario, I want to answer back, or just slam him up against the wall, or leave him hanging by his collar on the coat rack. But I can’t, as I’m no longer a player.”

He went on to say in 2020: “Mario’s mindset was difficult for a collective sport. The philosophy I wanted to put in place, the togetherness and work ethic I wanted to build, it was difficult for me to work with a player like Mario. It was really difficult for both of us to work together so we decided to go different ways.”

Getty Images SportWhat next for Balotelli? Striker remains a free agent

Vieira is being left to reflect on where it all went wrong for him at Genoa. His final game at the helm was a 2-0 defeat to Jamie Vardy’s Cremonese. That result left Genoa rooted to the foot of the table with three draws and six losses to their name. They have, however, progressed to the last-16 of the Coppa Italia.

Roberto Murgita has been handed the reins for now, with inspiration being sought from a fresh set of eyes. It remains to be seen when and where Balotelli will be seen again. He has not made a competitive appearance in 2025, having been frozen out by Vieira, with his last outing for Genoa coming in a 2-1 defeat to current Serie A champions Napoli on December 21, 2024. He is currently without a club and waiting on enticing offers.

Worth more than Buonanotte & Wilson: Leeds hit gold signing "electric" star

It is hard to describe the summer transfer window as anything other than a disappointment for Leeds United after they failed to make any further additions to their squad on deadline day.

Speaking ahead of the deadline, Daniel Farke said: “In defence and midfield, goalkeeper position and full-back position, we’ve done really good business. But we spoke quite open and honest about it, we would need to add some more quality up front. We need to stay awake until the last hour of this window.”

Journalist Graham Smyth added that the German head coach claimed that it would be “difficult” for the Championship champions to avoid relegation if they did not strengthen their attack in the final days of the window.

The same reporter noted after the deadline passed that the day was a “disaster” for the 49ers, who failed to back their manager with what he felt they needed to avoid relegation.

Leeds have only scored one goal, a penalty against Everton, in three Premier League matches so far, and there are big concerns over the quality of their frontline.

The Whites were linked with plenty of attackers heading into the deadline, but they were ultimately unable to land Facundo Buonanotte or Harry Wilson.

How Leeds failed Farke this summer

Leeds may well go on to achieve survival and enjoy a fantastic first season back in the Premier League, but it is worrying when the manager states outright that it will be difficult to avoid the drop without signings and the club fail to bring any players in.

The Whites were reportedly hopeful of signing Buonanotte on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion in the final few days of the window, after he scored five goals on loan at Leicester City in the Premier League last season, per Sofascore.

However, Chelsea, despite their vast resources and the incredible talent they already possess in attacking areas, decided to sign the Argentine youngster on a season-long loan to compete with Estevao, Pedro Neto, Cole Palmer, Jamie Gittens, Tyrique George, Andrey Santos, Joao Pedro, and Enzo Fernandez for a starting berth in the attacking midfield positions.

After their move for Buonanotte fell through, Leeds entered into talks with Fulham over a permanent deal to sign Wales international Harry Wilson to bolster their squad.

The left-footed star, who scored ten goals in the last two Premier League seasons combined, did not end up at Elland Road on deadline day, though, because the Cottagers pulled the plug.

Fulham reportedly had a late change of heart and decided to keep Wilson as part of their squad after a deal for Tyrique George from Chelsea fell through for them.

Ipswich Town'sLeifDavisin action with Fulham's Harry Wilson

This meant that Leeds ended the day without any reinforcements to their attack, and that they ended the window with Noah Okafor as the only attacking signing who was signed for a transfer fee.

The situation is what it is now, though, and Farke has to work with what he has to achieve what he feels is now unlikely – survival. One of the players he is tasked with getting the best out of is Wilfried Gnonto, who is currently worth more than both Buonanotte and Wilson.

Leeds have hit the jackpot with Wilfried Gnonto

The West Yorkshire outfit paid a fee of £3.8m to sign the versatile forward from Zurich back in the summer of 2022, and he is now worth significantly more than that.

Leeds targeted Buonanotte and Wilson to bolster the team in the positions that Gnonto plays for the Whites, but the Italian youngster is worth even more than both of them, per Transfermarkt.

Leeds United'sMateoJosephcelebrates with Ethan Ampadu and Wilfried Gnonto

The Chelsea loanee is valued at £17.3m and the Wales international is valued at £13m by Transfermarkt, which shows that both players are highly valued players, thanks to their respective performances in the Premier League in recent seasons.

Gnonto may still be waiting for his first goal contribution in the Premier League this season, but he is an exciting young talent who has the potential to develop into a terrific option for Farke if he can hit his stride in the top-flight.

At the age of 21, the Leeds forward still has plenty of time left ahead of him to develop and improve as a player, with every match in the Premier League another piece of valuable experience for him.

Gnonto, who was hailed as “electric” by Statman Dave when the Whites were last in the top-flight, has already shown plenty of signs of progression throughout his career at Elland Road, as illustrated by his soaring market value.

As you can see in the table above, the Italy U21 international is currently valued at around £19m by Transfermarkt, which means that he is worth even more than both Buonanotte and Wilson.

This also shows that Leeds have hit the jackpot with the 21-year-old starlet because his value has soared from £3.8m to £19m in the space of three years, suggesting that the club could make a gigantic profit on him in the future if they ever decide to cash in.

Gnonto’s next step is to show that he can deliver consistent quality and consistent all-round performances in the Premier League with Leeds this season to help them avoid the drop, and to show that the club did not need the attackers that they targeted in his position.

The Italian ace produced nine goals and six assists in 26 starts in the Championship last season, per Sofascore, and may be able to provide a threat as both a scorer and a creator of goals if given the chance to start regularly in the top-flight this term.

Irrespective of what happens this season, though, Leeds have undoubtedly hit the jackpot with Gnonto, who is an incredibly valuable asset for the club at this moment in time.

Crystal Palace now leading race for £30m attacker, club-to-club talks held

da bet sport: Crystal Palace are leading the race for a “skilful” attacker, and they are now working to make a breakthrough in talks with his club, according to a report.

Palace want new attacker with Eze 100% committed to Spurs move

da aviator aposta: Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg has now revealed that Tottenham Hotspur are making progress in their pursuit of Eberechi Eze, who is now fully expected to make a move across the capital before the September 1st deadline.

Losing Eze will, of course, be a major blow for Oliver Glasner, given that the England international chipped in with 16 goal contributions in the league alone last season, but the manager has already started working on bringing in a replacement.

Oliver Glasner lifts the FA Cup.

Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Hwang Hee-chan and Leicester City’s Bilal El Khannouss have been named as potential options, with positive talks being held over a deal for the latter, and there has now been a new update on the Eagles’ pursuit of the Moroccan.

According to a report from TEAMtalk, Crystal Palace are now leading their Premier League rivals in the race for El Khannouss, and they are looking to make a breakthrough in club-to-club talks with Leicester.

The 21-year-old has been left impressed by the strides Palace have made under the helm of Glasner, meaning he is now keen on a move to Selhurst Park, and the Eagles are in a strong position to win the race.

Crystal Palace receive reply to £27.6m bid for 21-goal star

BySean Markus Clifford Aug 19, 2025

However, a deal for the youngster, who is regarded as one of the top targets to replace Eze, could be on the expensive side, with the Foxes now looking to hold out for £30m.

"Skilful" El Khannouss could be exciting Eze heir

At just 21-years-old, the Leicester starlet is at the right age to be a long-term replacement for Eze, and there are indications he has the talent to replace the England international, having received high praise after performing well against Manchester City last season.

Former manager Ruud van Nistelrooy said: “I think Bilal deserves a big compliment today, for his work rate off the ball and on the ball for how skillful and technical he is.”

The Belgium-born maestro has also gotten off to a fantastic start to the new Championship campaign, picking up two assists in his opening two games for Leicester.

It would be a gamble for Palace to sign El Khannouss, given that he is yet to truly establish himself at Premier League level, but the Leicester ace is clearly very talented, and can play in both attacking midfield and left-wing, making him a like-for-like replacement for Eze.

Kasun Rajitha joins Essex on five-match deal

Sri Lanka seamer Kasun Rajitha has joined Essex on a five-match deal for the Rothesay County Championship. The right-armer has 18 Test caps, with 55 wickets at 29.58, and returned a career-best 5 for 56 in the last of those appearances, in March 2024 against Bangladesh. A tall quick, measuring in at close to 6ft 4in, Rajitha is set to feature in the squad for Essex’s third County Championship match against Worcestershire which begins on Friday at Chelmsford. The move will see Rajitha reunited with Chris Silverwood, who had a spell as Sri Lanka head coach from 2022 to 2024. Now director of cricket at Essex, Silverwood regards the 31-year-old’s skill and experience as a vital addition to an already strong pace attack. His arrival will help compensate for the loss of Shardul Thakur, after the India international won a late call-up to the IPL.”We are delighted to welcome Kasun to Essex and very much look forward to watching him perform in the County Championship,” said Silverwood. “I know his experience and skill set will certainly help strengthen our already superb bowling attack.”Kasun Rajitha has two five-wicket hauls in Tests•AFP/Getty Images

In a statement released by Essex, Rajitha added: “It is a really proud moment for me to be joining Essex. I have followed the team over the years, and they have always produced excellent and entertaining first-class cricket.”I am joining a strong bowling unit and look forward to contributing on the field and helping the team win matches. I would like to thank Chris Silverwood for giving me this opportunity and Sri Lanka Cricket for allowing me to further hone my skills.”The acquisition of Rajitha could mean rotation is on the cards for Essex’s three-pronged seam attack, with Sam Cook the likeliest to sit out the next round ahead of a possible appearance in England’s first Test of the summer against Zimbabwe, which begins on May 22 at Trent Bridge. Cook, uncapped, has already bowled 75 overs across four innings so far, with seven dismissals at 28.42.

More important than Isak & Barcola: Liverpool ramping up move for £45m star

da aposte e ganhe: And with that, Darwin Nunez is gone. Liverpool have taken the riches of Saudi and could now look to force through a move for Alexander Isak.

da bet7: The Reds have spent a colossal amount already this summer, that is no secret. Florian Wirtz arrived in a British record £116m deal from Bayer Leverkusen and Hugo Ekitike has also arrived for over £70m.

Yet, Isak, valued at £150m by Newcastle United, would be their biggest move yet. It’s just a pity for their sake that the Toon have no desire to sell their prized asset between now and September 1st.

Still, Isak isn’t the only priority target for the remaining weeks of the summer window.

Liverpool's priority targets

A move for Isak would be simply lovely, of course it would be, but despite the sale of Nunez – who departed for £46m – it would take something special for Newcastle to be convinced to sell.

The same feeling is felt when assessing the Bradley Barcola situation at PSG. Liverpool admire the winger (who doesn’t?), and could make their move after Luis Diaz headed for Bayern Munich.

Luis Diaz

However, the French sensation isn’t planning to force through a move as Isak has, and PSG are in no hurry to sell one of their key players.

One might argue that Liverpool look fine in forward areas, but at the back they need options. Marc Guehi could be that.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

This saga has been rumbling on for most of the summer now, so much so that over a month ago it was reported that the Crystal Palace centre-back was close to agreeing personal terms with the Anfield side.

Since then, things have gone quiet but the England international remains on Liverpool’s radar.

Crystal Palace's MarcGuehi

A new report from the Daily Mail this weekend suggests that Liverpool are due to hold further talks with Palace over signing Guehi after Sunday’s Community Shield.

The defender is in the last year of his deal at Selhurst Park and a year on from when the Eagles rejected a £65m bid from Newcastle, he could now be on the move for a fee of £45m.

Hear us out, Guehi is more important than Isak

Isak would be an almighty statement, don’t get us wrong. This is a player who Jamie Carragher described as “the best striker in the Premier League” and scored 27 goals in all competitions throughout 2024/25.

In the Premier League last term, only a certain Mo Salah found the net more regularly.

Yet, the sensational Swede isn’t the be-all and end-all as far as Arne Slot’s title hopes are concerned. Why? Well, Liverpool have already signed Ekitike – a player boasting immense potential – and they have Cody Gakpo who can play up top.

Of course, looking at Manchester City’s Erling Haaland, the Reds could do with a talismanic focal point but let’s not forget the aforementioned Salah. He’s still around and he’s ready to have a big season in front of goal again.

As for Barcola, we can make a similar argument here. Liverpool may require another wide option after Diaz left Merseyside behind but they do have options. Once again, both Ekitike and Gakpo could play in that role.

But, in defence, Liverpool look rather barren. Out wide they have strengthened significantly with Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong bolstering the full-back areas but with Joe Gomez injured, Jarrel Quansah having left and Ibou Konate potentially off to Real Madrid, things do look sparse in central defence.

Jarell Quansah for Liverpool

Indeed, throughout pre-season so far, we’ve seen Wataru Endo, Trey Nyoni and Ryan Gravenberch all start games as a centre-half.

For a team harbouring ambitions of retaining their Premier League title, this isn’t okay. After all, let’s look at Arsenal. While they’ve had problems building a cohesive attack, their defensive depth is remarkable.

At right-back they have Ben White and Jurrien Timber, at left-back they have Riccardo Calafiori and Myles Lewis-Skelly. In the middle William Saliba, Gabriel, Cristhian Mosquera and Jakub Kiwior make up a fantastic quartet.

Arsenal'sGabrielMagalhaes and WilliamSaliba

At Anfield, they can only dream of such defensive luxuries. However, with the arrival of Guehi, it would suitably strengthen what looks like Liverpool’s biggest weakness heading into the new season.

Isak and Barcola would be captivating additions but the Palace captain is a ready-made option who would immediately strengthen the backline at Slot’s disposal.

Already described as “England’s player” during the last European Championships by analyst Ben Mattinson, Guehi is most notably an excellent reader of the play, ranking inside the best 4% of centre-backs in Europe’s top five leagues for passes blocked with 0.96 per 90 minutes.

Guehi is also brilliant and bringing the ball out from the back. Only 20% of positionally similar players in the continent’s best divisions have registered more successful take-ons over the last year. Is it really any surprise that reporter Bobby Manzi suggested he is a “monster in defence”?

At the age of 25, he’s also approaching his prime and it feels like he’s got the best years of his career ahead of him.

So, while Isak and Barcola would be statement additions that send shockwaves through the rest of the Premier League, Guehi must be the priority. Liverpool’s backline looks incomplete but the Crystal Palace stalwart would complete the jigsaw.
