Slot should drop Salah by unleashing Liverpool ace for the very first time

da apostebet: Maybe we all got a little carried away. After all, it was only Old Trafford. Liverpool faced a sterner test in the form of Nuno Espirito Santo’s Nottingham Forest, and they did not pass.

da bet7k: Nine points from 12 is hardly a poor return for Arne Slot’s opening phase as Liverpool boss, but the Dutchman must ensure that a blip does not devolve into a blue streak to cast the honeymoon period into long faded memory.

The games are going to come thick and fast, with the new and larger Champions League mixing with the Carabao Cup to perch atop the unceasing top-flight action.

Liverpool were throttled by their own lacklustre performance, dredging nightmarish memories of the backend of last season. Still, credit must be handed to Forest, who were coherent and tenacious and took their chance when it mattered. Their unbeaten start, at the expense of Slot’s, extends.

And so we now turn away from the Premier League for the first time under Slot’s wing. The Champions League returns, with AC Milan awaiting Liverpool at the San Siro, and the Reds might want to consider the somewhat dramatic move to drop Mohamed Salah on Tuesday.

Why Slot should drop Mohamed Salah

It hardly requires microscopic analysis to determine that Liverpool were far below par on Saturday, but microscopic analysis has been rife since, spreading like damp on an old wall.

Mohamed Salah against Nottingham Forest

Perhaps, Liverpool had an off day. Perhaps, this is a new system with a new boss, and hiccups are to be expected, especially early on.

But such setbacks can’t continue, must not continue. Liverpool were a day late and a dollar short, and the scarcely altered starting lineup across this first month of the era has to now change, or Slot will face the same issues as his predecessor and see his first-team reduced by the snapping jas of injury setbacks.

Salah was not the only home player to toil on Saturday, but he did put in a pretty dire performance. The Merseysiders were possibly lulled into a false sense of infallibility after an emphatic start to the campaign, but as skipper Virgil van Dijk said, the recent loss was “unacceptable” and a “reality check”.

The Egyptian has scored three goals and supplied three assists so far for Liverpool this season but after starting both of his nation’s international fixtures over the past couple of weeks, it’s important that he is rotated to preserve fitness and juggle the workload.

Though he’s a world-class athlete, Salah is 32 years old. He made 3.8 ball recoveries per 90 during the 2017/18 Premier League season, his first at Liverpool, but so far this year just 2.31, as per FBref. This is only natural; Salah has tweaked his game accordingly as he is still one of the best in the business.

But AC Milan put Venezia to the sword last weekend, ploughing into a four-goal lead after half an hour, and any languidness will be found out.

That’s why it might be high time to make a change or two. Diogo Jota has struggled to influence across his past few outings – failing to find the net – and Luis Diaz had an off day after the Tricky Trees, so with Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez waiting in the wings, it would seem apt timing for Slot to make a change.

But Salah, ahh, Salah’s a different story, right? Wrong. He could do with a rest and can always be introduced after the break against Tuesday’s Italian opponents, should he be required. Harvey Elliott’s out injured after fracturing his foot, but maybe it’s time to unleash Federico Chiesa for the first time.

The man to replace Mo Salah

It was a frustrating summer, with a bid to sign Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi foiled by the midfielder’s desire to remain in Basque Country. No alternatives were landed and Liverpool also neglected to improve their backline.

But Chiesa arrived from Juventus for a cut-price £12.5m fee. The versatile forward had been expected to leave Turin all summer with one year remaining on his deal, and Liverpool acted to bypass competition from the likes of Barcelona and complete their frontline.

He’s yet to make his debut but will hope to be in line now, having used the recent international break to build on his fitness and attune to Slot’s system.

Chiesa could also be the perfect weapon against Milan, especially considering that either Gakpo or Nunez are expected to get the nod in midweek. Salah, while an elite-class playmaker, does not have the wheels that he once did and will struggle to stretch the flanks and overload with the same kind of success that Chiesa could have.

The Italy international, indeed, ranks among the top 1% of forwards across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for shot-creating actions and the top 3% for progressive carries per 90.

Salah, conversely, ranks among the top 19% for shot-creating actions but only the top 44% for progressive carries per 90.

Federico Chiesa for Juventus

This could see the 26-year-old work in a kind of dynamic tandem with, say, Gakpo, whose finishing and multi-functionality as a focal striker could prove key in unlocking the hosts’ backline tomorrow.

Liverpool’s new recruit, moreover, scored ten goals across 29 starting appearances in all competitions for Juventus last year, putting the misery of the past injury-riddled years behind him.

He knows Milan well and will feel that he has the tools to unlock the defence. Liverpool will always be at their most threatening when Salah is in the starting line-up but he played 75 minutes in Botswana last week and 90 minutes for Egypt just over one week ago. He needs to be rested ahead of the gruelling fixture list up ahead.

It might just bear dividends in the long run.

Cost £650k: Celtic struck gold by selling star who’s worth more than CCV

The summer transfer window officially slammed shut towards the end of last month and it was a busy last few weeks of the market for Celtic and their incoming business.

It was a slow start to the summer for the Scottish giants, who did not make a single outfield signing before August, but they finished it with a flourish.

Viljami Sinisalo and Kasper Schmeichel both came through the door before the last month of the window, following Joe Hart's retirement at the end of the 2023/24 campaign.

The Hoops then swooped to sign Paulo Bernardo and Adam Idah on permanent deals, along with Barcelona left-back Alex Valle on a season-long loan deal.

It then got to deadline day, shortly after the sale of Matt O'Riley to Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion, and Brendan Rodgers dipped into the market to make three new additions to his squad.

Central midfielders Arne Engels and Luke McCowan came in from Augsburg and Dundee respectively, whilst centre-back Auston Trusty joined from Sheffield United.

Trusty has the task of displacing Liam Scales, as a left-footed central defender, in order to play alongside Cameron Carter-Vickers, who has been a rock at the back for Celtic for a number of seasons.

Cameron Carter-Vickers' current market value

At the time of writing (08/09/2024), Transfermarkt currently values the USA international at a whopping €14m (£11.8m) and that makes him the joint-highest valued player in the squad, alongside Kyogo Furuhashi.

In the summer of 2022, Celtic paid a reported fee of £6m to sign the central defender on a permanent basis after an initial year on loan with the club under Ange Postecoglou.

Carter-Vickers featured in 33 of the club's 38 Scottish Premiership matches in his season on loan from Tottenham Hotspur in the 2021/22 campaign, and won 68% of his defensive duels.

As you can see in the table above, the American titan was a dominant figure at the heart of the Celtic defence in his first two seasons with the club as a permanent member of the team.

He has also won 67% of his duels and helped the Hoops to keep four clean sheets in four matches at the start of the 2024/25 campaign, which suggests that Carter-Vickers is on course for yet another impressive year at Parkhead.

Despite being the most valuable player in the Celtic squad and a consistently fantastic performer, there is a former Bhoys centre-back who is currently worth more than him – Kristoffer Ajer.

How much Celtic paid for Kristoffer Ajer

At the start of 2016, the Scottish giants swooped to sign the 17-year-old starlet from IK Start for a reported fee of just £650k, after the teenage gem had emerged as a first-team option for the side in his home country, in a deal that saw him officially join the club in the summer.

Curiously, Ajer played as a defensive midfielder, a central midfielder, and as a centre-forward for Start, and contributed with 14 goals and seven assists in 61 matches in all competitions, including seven goals in 14 games as a striker.

The Norwegian gem initially joined the academy team, and played five UEFA Youth League matches in the first half of the 2016/17 campaign, before being sent out on loan to Kilmarnock at the start of 2017 – making 16 Premiership appearances.

Former Celtic defender Kristoffer Ajer.

Ajer then returned to Celtic and made 24 appearances in the Scottish top-flight during the 2017/18 campaign, with all 34 of his outings in all competitions coming as a centre-back.

The Norway international went on to rack up 176 games in all competitions for the Premiership giants, contributing with seven goals and seven assists.

Along with providing an attacking threat from a centre-back position, the towering colossus, who was described as "faultless" by former boss Neil Lennon, also showcased his defensive quality in his final Premiership season with the club.

As you can see in the table above, Ajer was a dominant performer at the heart of the defence for Celtic and that form helped him to earn a move to the Premier League in the summer of 2021.

How much Celtic sold Kristoffer Ajer for

Brentford swooped in to sign him from Celtic for a reported fee of £13.5m ahead of the 2021/22 campaign, following their promotion from the Championship.

This shows that the Hoops struck gold with the central defender as they turned a £650k signing from Norway into a £13.5m player, who also made the best part of 200 appearances for the club in all competitions.

Brentford centre-back Kristoffer Ajer.

At the time of writing (08/09/2024), Transfermarkt places Ajer's current market value at €15m (£12.6m) and that means that, whilst he is still more valuable than Carter-Vickers, his value has decreased since his move to the Bees.

This is another reason why the Scottish giants hit the jackpot with the central defender, as his market value has not improved during his time in England.

Therefore, Celtic seemingly cashed in on him at the perfect time and have not, as of yet, lived to regret selling him for £13.5m, as that currently looks like a fantastic deal by the Premiership side.

As you can see in the table above, Ajer did feature in 28 of Brentford's 38 Premier League games in the 2023/24 campaign, but only helped his team to keep two clean sheets, which suggests that he was part of a leaky defence for Thomas Frank.

Ultimately, his performances in England over the last three seasons or so have not been good enough to see his value rise above the fee Celtic paid for him, which is why they struck gold with the Norway international, despite him still being worth more than Carter-Vickers.

Fabrizio Romano: Southampton hold talks to sign new £48k-p/w international

Southampton could be set to add another new face to their ranks this summer as they are reportedly in talks to sign a Dutch international ace.

Saints loe Premier League opener

Russell Martin's side fell to a 1-0 opening day defeat against Newcastle United on their return to the Premier League, with a goal from Joelinton proving to be the difference between the sides.

Their defeat came in spite of the fact that they played an hour of the match against 10-man opposition, with Fabian Schar having been shown a red card for a coming together with Ben Brereton-Diaz.

After Fernandes: Southampton want perfect £100k-p/w Walker-Peters partner

Southampton are continuing to be busy in the transfer window.

ByKelan Sarson Aug 21, 2024

The goal came from a Southampton mistake rather than a piece of brilliance from the Magpies though, with goalkeeper Alex McCarthy giving the ball away close to his own goal and seeing it fly past him moments later. After the game, Martin defended his shot-stopper, who is deputising for the injured Gavin Bazunu.

"It doesn't bother me – Al will be fine. The problem is the few minutes before that and the throw-in shouldn't even end up back at him. He made one mistake, and we've been punished – but it's not just him. It's on me for asking him to play that way, and it's on the players for going back to him in the first place."

Now though, they could be set to land a potential upgrade.

Southampton in talks with Dutch goalkeeper

That comes as transfer guru Fabrizio Romano reveals that the Saints are in talks with Feyenoord over a potential move to sign goalkeeper Justin Bijlow this summer.

The 26-year-old, who has eight caps for the Netherlands and was part of their EURO 2024 squad, has been linked with Arsenal and Manchester United in recent transfer windows, but both clubs appear to have since looked elsewhere.

Feyenoord's Justin Bijlow

And it is now a move to the south coast outfit that seems most likely, with Romano explaining that the goalkeeper is keen on the move to the Premier League and that he is high on Southampton's list of potential additions.

Currently earning £48,000-a-week in the Netherlands, Bijlow's arrival on a similar wage could make him one of the club's highest earners, but the 6ft 2 shot stopper certainly brings an ability to play out with his feet.

Part of Arne Slot's title-winning side, Bijlow made more passes than McCarthy on average in 2023/24 and is perfectly comfortable playing with a high line and press, ranking in the top 1% of all goalkeepers for defensive actions outside the penalty area, while he also ranks in the top percentile for crosses stopped, claiming 13% of all balls into the box compared to a paltry 4.1% from McCarthy.

Should he arrive at St Mary's before the transfer window slams shut, he may quickly become one of the most important players in Martin's side.

Lord Patel: Black Lives Matter opponents are behind Yorkshire reform delays

Chairman hits out at predecessor following cancellation of EGM to determine Test viability

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Feb-2022Lord Kamlesh Patel has accused a group of Yorkshire members of attempting to “delay and derail” Headingley’s reinstatement as an international venue, because they believe the club is being “sacrificed on the altar of Black Lives Matter”.Yorkshire’s hopes of meeting the ECB’s conditions for hosting fixtures against New Zealand and South Africa this summer suffered a setback this week, after the club was forced to delay a proposed Emergency General Meeting (EGM), which had been expected to confirm governance changes in the wake of the Azeem Rafiq racism scandal. The EGM had been due to take place on Wednesday evening, but was cancelled after Yorkshire admitted it “had not been properly called under club rules”. The news was followed by claims from former chairman Robin Smith that the process to appoint Patel as the new chairman last year was “invalid”.In a statement to the PA news agency, Patel said: “It is plain that, when I joined the club in November, it had a wealth of legacy problems inherited from previous leadership, of which former chairman Robin Smith was a part.”I made a conscious decision that we would focus on a positive future for Yorkshire and remediate the inherited issues. For me and others at the club, this was part of a positive programme for change as there is no benefit to Yorkshire CCC in arguing about the past. That is a block to reform.”There is emerging, however, a clear agenda to undermine the club, driven by opposition to our progress and a desire to maintain an outdated status quo. It is disheartening and pernicious in equal manner.”We have become aware of a small group of individuals who have indicated a belief that, by looking to make progress and change for the better, ‘the lamb that is Yorkshire Cricket Club is to be sacrificed on the altar of Black Lives Matter’. This is unacceptable in every possible way.”This group is actively seeking to delay and derail the essential reforms and consequently the return of international cricket by litigating process issues, without presenting any positive alternative.”Patel has been the driving force behind Yorkshire’s response to being stripped of the right to host international matches by the ECB, following their mishandling of a report into Rafiq’s claims of institutional racism. Patel was brought in as chair in November, shortly after the incumbent, Roger Hutton, resigned. He said last month the club had made “significant progress” but warned that they could not remain “financially viable” without the restoration of major match status, with Headingley otherwise set to lose out on hosting a Test on New Zealand’s tour and an ODI featuring South Africa.Related

However, the reported on Thursday that Yorkshire’s failure to register a rule change, which had been voted on at last year’s Annual General Meeting, with the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), meant that Patel’s authority had been called into question. In a written statement, Smith responded: “Lord Patel’s comments seek to damage me for drawing attention to his own failures.”The members will in due course have an opportunity to pass judgement on Lord Patel’s actions since November last year and their enormous financial consequences for the club (currently rumoured to be more than GBP 3million).”In the meantime he should focus on getting the club’s legal position corrected in timely fashion.”As to the majority of members wanting his reforms, we shall see in due course. The reality, though, is that all Yorkshire members wish to see Test cricket returned to Headingley and have been threatened that that will not happen unless they support the reforms.”That is no way to ascertain members’ true views. Yorkshire members are true lovers of the game and are entitled to more respect than Lord Patel is showing them.”Among Patel’s first actions taken as chair was settling an employment tribunal with Rafiq, and overseeing the removal of Martyn Moxon, Yorkshire’s long-serving director of cricket, and Andrew Gale, the head coach, as part of a cull of 16 staff members.Yorkshire had been hoping to push through changes to the structure of their board, which reportedly included the ECB being given a seat on the club’s nominations committee, this week – with the outcome expected to influence the possible return of international cricket to Headingley.Martin Darlow, the ECB’s deputy chair, said during an appearance before the Department of Culture, Media and Sport select committee last week that the governing body “will be making a decision and considering their options” following the EGM. Rafiq himself said last month that the “time is right” for Yorkshire to regain its hosting rights.Yorkshire released a statement saying that it had cancelled the EGM after taking “specialist legal advice”, suggesting that the failure to notify the FCA of changes to its rules was “a legacy issue” attributable to the previous leadership. The club also said that it hoped to rearrange the EGM before the end of the month.

Unpredictable Pakistan become regular semi-finalists

Despite numerous uncertainties that have shrouded their cricket, Pakistan have made it to their sixth consecutive semi-final of an ICC tournament

Abhishek Purohit in Colombo03-Oct-2012The Premadasa Stadium, in its refurbished avatar, shimmers in the Colombo afternoon heat, its near-vertical stands staring coldly at the tattered outfield, large patches of brown spread like a rash on the green. Last evening Pakistan’s fielders, faced with a win-or-depart situation, threw themselves around on it, without a care for their bodies. Their spinners squeezed all the power and fight out of Australia’s batsmen. The reward was a sixth successive semi-final in an ICC tournament since the double blows of tragedy and disappointment in the 2007 World Cup.For a side that is called unpredictable, inconsistent, mercurial and the like almost by rote, that is an achievement beyond belief. Even more so, given that they have been reduced to a life lived perpetually out of suitcases for a majority of that period. You wonder whether someone like young Umar Akmal, who started his international career after Pakistan’s international exile began, even knows what it is like to have home advantage. It has to be one of international sports’ more fascinating stories, if only for the demands the situation places on a group of men to remain largely away from loved ones and the comfort of familiarity, perform at their peak, every series, every game, every innings. Perhaps, one day, an expressive and thoughtful man like Mohammad Hafeez will be able to reveal just what it takes, mentally and physically, out of him and his players. For the moment, Hafeez is just proud of what Pakistan have done. “For the past three years we have been away from our home grounds and home crowd,” he said. “We are very much used to it now. It has been a very difficult time for our team. It is amazing and special what we have been able to achieve despite all that, and credit should go to all players and the management.”Do the six consecutive knockout appearances signal a break from the past – a new set of beliefs, a new method of operation, an end to the chaos, the intrigue, the flux? Far from it. Just sample the number of captains Pakistan have had since the 2007 World Cup: Shoaib Malik, Younis Khan, Mohammad Yousuf, Salman Butt, Shahid Afridi, Misbah-ul-Haq, Hafeez. Seven. This is without counting the permutations within the seven. The controversies, bans and investigations continued to happen, among them being the attack on the Sri Lanka team, the Sydney Test fallout and the spot-fixing fiasco. It is tempting to see the latest semi-final appearance from the point of view of what happened after the previous one at the 2010 World Twenty20. Pakistan appear to have regrouped completely and convincingly from the incidents in England that it is easy to view the possibility of another title simply as a break from the recent past, as a final stamp of vindication. That could be an important undercurrent but the larger picture is that Pakistan have achieved consistency in global tournaments without abandoning the traits that make them so moving to watch as a team, and so infuriating as a system. While the controversies continued, Pakistan also found inspiration from the unlikeliest of quarters at world events. The standout instance is probably that of Afridi, as volatile with the bat as he is dependable with the ball, producing two bursts of all-round dominance in the semi-final and final of the 2009 World Twenty20. While nowhere close in magnitude, but equally crucial to Pakistan’s chances, was the unexpected burst from Umar Gul the batsman, who stunned the South Africa pace battery a few days ago at the Premadasa. Gul’s cameo was vintage Pakistan, in that it came out of nowhere. Premier fast bowler, under pressure and out of form, comes in at 76 for 7 and starts blasting sixes like nobody’s business. As the tournament progressed, it seemed as though a team performance similar to Afridi and Gul’s individual freakish brilliance was not far away. And it arrived against Australia, in a match where uncertainty was at its peak. With India slated to play after them, Pakistan had no determinable safe goal to aim for. Except for the requirement that they had to win, and win big.Pakistan sides somehow find direction in vagueness. While they may have a lot in common with fellow subcontinent teams, such as the ability to play spin, wristy batsmen, susceptibility against genuine pace and swing, the ability to explode from one spark of instinct is decidedly Pakistani. On the day they rediscover it, they are a compelling sight They may find it again in the semi-final, they may not. But watch we must.

With their losses against Bournemouth and Brighton, the Cityzens now find themselves five points behind league leaders Liverpool.

While it is too early to write off a team like City at this stage of the season, concerns have been raised over Pep Guariola's men's poor performances, especially in the absence of Ballon d'Or winner and ace midfielder Rodri, however, star striker Haaland felt that there is nothing to worry about and fired a warning they will be back to their best very soon.

When asked if the international break helped the Manchester City players amid a series of poor results, the Norwegian said, "Yeah, I think it was good. I think it was good for everyone to maybe go to their countries and national teams and to restart a little bit. We lost four in a row but how bad is it? It's not that bad.

England have named an unchanged 16-player squad for the three-match ODI series against Pakistan, which gets underway in Cardiff on July 8.England are already 2-0 up in their ODI series against Sri Lanka, with the final match taking place in Bristol on Sunday. Tom Banton was a late call-up for that series, after Dawid Malan withdrew for family reasons, and he retains his place in the squad to face Pakistan.Speaking in the wake of England’s eight-wicket win in the second ODI against Sri Lanka, at The Kia Oval on Thursday, Graham Thorpe indicated that changes could be afoot for the Bristol fixture, as England seek to test their bench strength ahead of the Pakistan series, which he admitted was likely to be a stiffer test of their credentials than Sri Lanka have managed to offer.”Potentially the Pakistan series could push us further,” Thorpe said. “We’ve been pleased with our own performances. We didn’t want any complacency to creep in. And because of the competition we have, the players want to put in good performances.”ESPNcricinfo Ltd

“Sri Lanka have a decent group of players, there’s no doubt about that. I think they’ve been weakened more on their batting side than their bowling unit but I believe Pakistan will be a team that’s further ahead in terms of experience and how they’ll be able to challenge. It’ll probably be a tougher contest.”One player who could come into the mix for the Bristol match is George Garton, the Sussex left-arm fast bowler. If selected, he will be making his England debut, three years after he was drafted into the Test squad as a replacement in the 2017-18 Ashes.Liam Dawson, Hampshire’s left-arm-spinning allrounder, is another player who has yet to feature in either match so far, and could be set for his first England appearance since 2018, having been a non-playing reserve in the 2019 World Cup-winning squad.England will name their squad for the T20I leg of the Pakistan series later this month, a series which will serve as an important pointer ahead of the T20 World Cup in the UAE and Oman this winter.”I think it will be a very good series,” Moeen Ali said. “Pakistan are normally a very good side, they give us good games, and I think they’ll be a stronger opposition than Sri Lanka, which means you get more of a chance to bat and bowl as a player who’s down the order, for example, and hasn’t been bowling much.”Definitely, they are one of the best [T20I] teams in the world, along with West Indies, India, Australia,’ he said. “I think Pakistan are our bogey-team in World Cups, they always seem to do really well against us, so we can’t take them lightly at all, they are a fantastic team with quality players.”England ODI series vs Pakistan
