Dickson: 'It was a fire within me to prove they made the wrong decision'

Somerset’s quarter-final hero hoping to sign off with more silverware despite impending departure

Matt Roller12-Sep-2025Sean Dickson is a sports psychologist in training and does not have to look far to find a compelling case study for his second career. On Saturday night, Dickson walked out to play his final innings for Somerset at Taunton’s County Ground determined to prove the club’s management had made a mistake in not offering him a new contract; 43 minutes later, he walked off having dragged them to T20 Blast Finals Day almost single-handedly.”I was very clear on what I wanted to do: I wanted to sign off, and I wanted to sign off properly,” Dickson says. “It was a fire within me to go and prove that they’ve made the wrong decision, and I wanted to show them that… Normally, nerves are flowing, but I just took a deep breath, looked around, and just took it in for a bit. I set out to go and prove a point.”He proved it emphatically, hitting 71 not out off 26 balls. Somerset needed 33 off the last two overs, then 19 off the final five balls; Dickson took them across the line in four. “That was my best T20 innings,” he says. “Everyone wants to be in that position where they need to score 20 off the last over and hit sixes to win the end of the game… It’s quite nice to say I’ve done it.”Related

Few would have seen it coming when Dickson, once a first-class triple-centurion with Kent, first signed for Somerset three years ago, ostensibly to strengthen their red-ball batting. He has struggled in the Championship, averaging 20.41, but his T20 record for Somerset is phenomenal: he averages 38.32 for them while maintaining a strike rate of 155.51.Somerset’s decision to let him go is not without logic, and Dickson acknowledges there is plenty of talent in the club’s “remarkable” academy. They have several promising young batters – including Tom Lammonby, Archie Vaughan, and James and Thomas Rew – and know that they need to offer them first-team cricket across formats to keep hold of them in the longer term.But he was clearly hurt by it nonetheless, describing the realisation that he would not be offered a deal as “heart-breaking”. He will instead spend the next two seasons at Glamorgan, who have effectively signed him as a replacement for Sam Northeast; the proximity will enable his young family to stay put in the south-west, where his eldest daughter recently started school.Dickson turned 34 last week and could have several years left ahead of him: during his time at London Spirit in the Hundred, he sought advice from coach Justin Langer on how he could become a “permanent player within the franchise system”. But he is already setting himself up for life after cricket, launching a sports psychology business early last year.His interest in the field started over a decade ago when he was diagnosed with generalised anxiety: “I just thought it was normal to have these situations where there was almost a dissociation from me being able to be in the present moment. It wasn’t.” He has since completed a masters in it, and is working towards his full accreditation.!function(){“use strict”;window.addEventListener(“message”,function(a){if(void 0!==a.data[“datawrapper-height”]){var e=document.querySelectorAll(“iframe”);for(var t in a.data[“datawrapper-height”])for(var r,i=0;r=e[i];i++)if(r.contentWindow===a.source){var d=a.data[“datawrapper-height”][t]+”px”;r.style.height=d}}})}();

He has worked primarily with young cricketers at Taunton School and in Somerset’s academy, along with his former Durham team-mate – and fellow South African – David Bedingham: “It’s not something that’s necessarily bringing in chunks of money, but it’s getting me to where I want to be from a transitional point of view once I decide to leave the game.”Dickson believes that conversations he had with James Franklin, the former New Zealand allrounder who he worked with at Durham, helped to change his mindset and unlock a new gear for him as a T20 player. “[We worked] on how you see situations. He harped on a lot on having that intent to get a boundary in your first six balls, and that’s transformed my career.”I was always happy to be 10 off 10… You’re never really going to impact the game [from there]. Him saying that just freed me up a little bit, and it then got me to realise how good I am within my first six balls and how potent I can be – and also, to realise that bowlers bowl their loosest balls to you in your first six balls… It’s just having that self-belief to go out and do that.”The nice thing is being able to lean on my own experience… I can’t show that X-factor if I’m going to fear the outcome, so being able to do what I did on Saturday and then speak to my clients around having that expectation within themselves is quite nice. I can lean on that nicely… ‘This is me putting it into practice.'”Dickson top-scored for Somerset in both the semi-final and the final when they won the Blast two years ago; last year, he dragged them from 7 for 3 to a successful chase of 154 against Surrey before a duck in their defeat to Gloucestershire in the final. He has become a reliable performer on county cricket’s biggest stage, and is targeting more of the same.So what would Sean Dickson, the sports psychologist, say to help Sean Dickson, the cricketer, prepare for Saturday? “He would probably harp on [about] staying as present as you can. I’ve got loads of tools in my toolbox for situations when the pressure’s high, so [I’ll be] relying on those, and also just being true to yourself and understanding who you are in the moment.”If your intuition says you need to play a certain shot or you need to take down a certain bowler and back yourself to do something different, then trust that… You’d rather walk off the field knowing you gave it a shot than walk off knowing you didn’t even give it an attempt in the first place. The most important thing is just to stay as humble and as present as you possibly can.”It has been a “bittersweet” few days for Dickson since his match-winning innings in the quarter-final, with his imminent departure slowly sinking in. But come Saturday, his only focus will be on capping his three years at Somerset with a second Blast title: “That would be the icing on top of the cake… That’d be the best ending for me.”

Man Utd must sell £31m star who earns more than Branthwaite & Zirkzee

Having historically struggled to assert their dominance in the transfer market, Manchester United are now looking to complete their business early.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is keen to sign young players that can develop into superstars, hence the recent links to Joshua Zirkzee and Jarrad Branthwaite.

The duo both fit the profile of a Man Utd target under INEOS ownership, being 23 and 21 years old, respectively, however, the Everton defender could prove to be too costly according to reports.

With the two most talked-about Man United targets in mind, who could be given the boot if one of them arrives?

Lindelof’s Man Utd career so far

Almost seven years ago, Jose Mourinho signed a young Victor Lindelof from Benfica for a fee in the region of £31m.

During his first campaign at Old Trafford, the Sweden international struggled to work his way into the starting eleven, starting just 13 Premier League matches.

Man United's Victor Lindelof

However, he solidified himself as a regular during the 2018/19 season, starting 29 Premier League games while partnering Chris Smalling, Eric Bailly, and Phil Jones.

The 29-year-old continued to be a reliable performer under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but his involvement has decreased recently, and that will only continue to be the case next season.

What Man United currently pay Lindelof

It’s fair to say that going into last season, Lindelof would have been viewed as a rotation option for the centre-half position, with Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, and Harry Maguire all ahead of him in the pecking order.

However, Lindelof’s chances of saving his Man Utd career were hindered massively, with an injury halting any momentum that he’d developed, missing 22 games in total.

This meant that the Swede only started 14 Premier League games, with a few of them even coming as a left-back due to the lack of depth in that position.

Fast forward to today, and it’s unknown whether Lindelof will be a Man United player next season, especially considering reports have suggested he could reunite with Mourinho at Fenerbahce.

Despite his absence making the defensive department slightly more vulnerable, his exit could prove to be the best decision, especially considering how much he currently earns at Old Trafford.

Via Capology

As per Capology, the Swedish captain’s salary is an astonishing £120k-per-week, which equates to exactly £6.24m per year.

This means that the number two earns over two times more than the aforementioned Zirkzee and Branthwaite’s, as they earn £18.7k and £35k per week each week respectively.

Furthermore, Lindelof is on the same wage as Martinez and Andre Onana, while also boasting a higher salary than the likes of Rasmus Hojlund, Alejandro Garnacho, and Kobbie Mainoo.

On top of that, the right-footed defender earns an identical wage to Alexander Isak, Jarrod Bowen, and Emiliano Martinez, for example, who are all far more influential for their teams.

Considering Lindelof’s contract expires in the summer of 2025, this transfer window may be the last opportunity for Man United to recoup any funds from their £31m signing.

Therefore, considering his salary, contract length, and performance, it’s vital that the Red Devils look to move the centre half on this summer; otherwise, he will walk on a free deal.

'Can he do it?' – Wayne Rooney set 'fantastic achievement' challenge as Man Utd legend made aware of issue that he has to address at Plymouth

Wayne Rooney continues to see "can he do it?" questions asked at Plymouth, with the Manchester United legend set a "fantastic achievement" challenge.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The former England captain returned to management in the summer of 2024 when taking the reins at Home Park. He is attempting to rebuild his reputation in coaching circles following a disastrous stint in charge of Birmingham that saw NFL legend Tom Brady and the Blues board cut that experiment short after just 83 days.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Plymouth have delivered a mixed bag in 2024-25, with three wins being countered by six defeats. The Pilgrims have conceded 19 goals through 11 games – which is the second-worst record in the Championship – and Rooney has been told that merely finishing outside of the bottom three should be considered success in his debut campaign.

  • WHAT PALMER SAID

Former EFL player and coach Carlton Palmer has told : "I think the problem is for Wayne Rooney's side that they're conceding way too many goals. I mean, they're up there with the most goals conceded so far this season. Watford are in ninth place, and they've conceded 19 goals, but the teams that have conceded as many as Plymouth’s 19 are Queens Park Rangers, 19, and Portsmouth, 23. They're all at the bottom end of the table.

"Wayne Rooney needs to stop Plymouth shipping goals the way that they are doing. As I said before, everybody is focusing in on Plymouth and Wayne Rooney every time there's a result. If it's a good result they're talking about, has he turned the corner? Is he proving people wrong? If they get a bad result, then you know people are saying, well, can he do it?"

  • Getty

    DID YOU KNOW?

Ex-England international Palmer added: "I think people just have to be patient and wait and see how the season unfolds. There's a long way to go to see if Wayne Rooney keeps Plymouth Argyle in the Championship this season. Given their resources, this would be a fantastic achievement.

"But they've certainly got to stop shipping goals, and they've got to sort their away form out, this is what you've got to do as a manager. You want to play attractive football, of course you do, you want to play a certain style, but the Championship’s a tough league and what you've got to do is you've got to make yourself hard to beat. At this moment in time, I can't say whether Plymouth are going to be relegated or not."

Sophie Devine yearns 'for an opportunity to pull on the whites'

New Zealand Women haven’t played a Test since 2004

Annesha Ghosh15-Sep-2021New Zealand captain Sophie Devine has echoed Alyssa Healy’s call for scheduling of more Tests in the women’s game, especially as part of multi-format series.Devine, who has 111 ODI caps and is only the third New Zealand woman to play 100 T20Is, said she yearns for “the opportunity to pull on the whites,” a reality that has eluded her in an international career spanning nearly 15 years. New Zealand women haven’t played a Test since 2004.”I think you ask any New Zealand player, whether they want to play a Test match or not, and I can guarantee you everyone would put their hand up and say that they would absolutely love the opportunity,” Devine said on the eve of the first ODI against England in Bristol, a venue that recently hosted the first non-Ashes women’s Test held in over half a decade.”I know certainly from my career, I have been pretty vocal about [the fact that] I would love to play Test cricket and certainly I would love to see the format used in the Ashes,” Devine said. “And, it’s going to be played in the Australia-India series, with, I guess, points carried across all formats. That’s a great way to play and keep the pressure on throughout the series.”New Zealand’s ongoing tour of England, which began with the hosts winning the T20Is 2-1, doesn’t feature a Test. However, in a deviation from what has become the norm in the women’s game, the calendar features more than one Test. England hosted India for a standalone Test in June. Later this month, India will play Australia in a one-off fixture in Gold Coast, as part of a multi-format series. For Devine, the No. 1 women’s T20I allrounder, the slight uptick in women’s Tests this year is “fantastic”.Related

“Look, I’d absolutely love to play Test cricket, I’d absolutely love to take on the Aussies, I’d love to play India obviously, love to play England, anyone – just to have the opportunity to pull on the whites. It’s something I haven’t been able to do in my longish career.”I would love to see more Test cricket in the women’s arena. It’s fantastic that there are two Test matches this year, which is the most in quite a while. So, I will certainly be watching that game (Australia vs India, starting September 30) with interest.”Earlier in the day, Healy had spoken with measured optimism about more multi-format series taking place in the future among a wider pool of women’s teams.”I love that it’s been spoken about. I wouldn’t say it’s going to be the new norm [against all teams] but imagine the Kiwis (New Zealand) standing up and saying, ‘We’d be really interested in playing one of these multi-format series,” Healy said at Fox Cricket’s launch of Australia’s seven-match home series against India that begins on September 21.”These multi format series are really fun to be a part of and the point structure is just a whole other ball game,” she said. “I never thought we’d have two Tests in the one summer… to be able to play against India and then England in the Ashes is really exciting. My Baggy Green is tucked nicely in my backpack and hopefully I can pull it on my head twice [this summer].”

Australia's top order: What are the selectors' options?

There are a number of permutations Australia’s selectors are mulling over as a decision on the first Test squad looms

Andrew McGlashan22-Oct-2025There’s a one-day series going on against India, but the main topic of conversation in Australian cricket is what the selectors will do with the squad for the first Ashes Test in Perth. Decision day is looming with one more round of Sheffield Shield to be played and while a few things are becoming clearer the big calls are still to be made. The fitness of Pat Cummins looms large over everything. But on the assumption he misses at least the first Test, which is all-but certain, and Scott Boland slots into the attack, the major talking points around the final XI will remain the top order. Here we run through three potential scenarios that George Bailey, Tony Dodemaide and head coach Andrew McDonald will be pondering. There is also a chance that the squad announcement won’t clarify everything, with the final calls not taken until the eve of the first Test.

Option 1: One in, one out

If the only spot vacant is an opener, then Marnus Labuschagne’s irresistible claims for a recall will see him go in at the top alongside Usman Khawaja as he did in the World Test Championship final against South Africa at Lord’s. That was a last-ditch move from the selectors, basically honouring Labuschagne’s role in getting them to the final, and he was dropped the Test after. He will be in much better form heading into the Perth Test should the role come his way again.”He can open…he can bat three. He’s versatile,” Steven Smith said. “We’ll see where it all stands when the team gets picked. I mean, it’s not too different to batting three, to be honest. He could be in first ball. So, it’s essentially the same thing.”This team also means Beau Webster’s bowling is retained which would take the pressure of Cameron Green to send down too many overs as he continues to work his way back with the ball even if his withdrawal from the India ODIs was described as a conservative decision. It keeps Green at No. 3 where he finished the West Indies series with scores of 52, 46 and 42 in tough batting conditions.Webster has missed the first two rounds of the Sheffield Shield after rolling his ankle but will feature against Victoria in Melbourne and last week Bailey confirmed he would be part of the Test squad.Could Jake Weatherald make his Test debut?•Getty Images

Option 2: Marnus at No. 3, Webster unlucky

While it’s often said there is very little difference between opening and No. 3, Labuschagne’s position is No. 3. If there was a decision made that he has to return in that slot, then an opener is still needed. That creates a few scenarios.Sam Konstas has been unconvincing in two Shield rounds, but a big score against Queensland, at a Test venue in the Gabba, would be an interesting twist. Uncapped Jake Weatherald has played arguably the most significant innings so far among the contenders with 94 off 99 balls in a low-scoring contest against Western Australia. Matt Renshaw started the season with a century for Queensland and has since earned an ODI recall. Would runs against India in the next two games be of any significance? And then there’s Mitch Marsh…This balance of top order would see Green move back down to No. 6 and require the selectors to have complete confidence in him being able to operate close to, if not completely, unrestricted as a bowler so that he can ease the burden on the three frontline quicks. If that was the case, Webster would very unfortunately be sidelined.Steven Smith averages 67.07 at No.3 but hasn’t batted there since 2017•Getty Images

Option 3: Positional shifts

This XI is the same as option one but with a subtle shift in the order. Smith returns to No. 3 and Green drops one spot to No. 4, where he made 174 against New Zealand early last year before his back injury. It’s an outcome endorsed by a number of pundits, including Mark Waugh, who believe that it is Green’s natural position.”I think he can bat anywhere,” Smith said of Green. “As he showed in the West Indies, I thought he batted really nicely at three. You know, he’s got a really good technique, good temperament. The beauty with our line-up, I think everyone can sort of slot in at different spots and be versatile.”Smith, meanwhile, has averaged 67.07 from 29 innings at No. 3 but, while on Tuesday he said he wasn’t “too fussed” about batting orders, he may be reluctant to shift again after the opening experiment. What would you do? Have your say

What could change

Whichever batting line-up Australia settle on for Perth, there’s a very good chance it’s not the one which finishes the series in Sydney. If Khawaja struggles early on it will raise questions about whether Australia need to bite the bullet and find opener. And what happens if Labuschagne is picked to open and starts poorly in the first two Tests? There are also, probably unfairly given his early success, still a few questions asked about whether Webster’s technique will stand-up long term in Test cricket. Josh Inglis is a versatile batter who the selectors value highly and he would come into the mix should anyone struggle or be injured.

Nottingham Forest eyeing Nuno upgrade who’d take Wood to the next level

Nottingham Forest face a big summer ahead of them if they are to build on the 17th-placed finish achieved in the Premier League during the 2023/24 campaign.

During the season, the Reds changed managers with fan-favourite Steve Cooper replaced by Nuno Espírito Santo, following a run of six matches which included five defeats and one draw.

The Portuguese boss managed to secure the club another season of top-flight football on the final day, despite receiving a four-point deduction for breaking the league’s PSR limits.

As a result of the previous points deduction, the club will have to operate shrewdly this summer to bolster their playing squad, but also to avoid any further PSR breach which could put their future Premier League status at risk.

However, despite keeping the Reds in England’s top-flight, the job expected of him upon his arrival at the City Ground, Nuno could find himself being replaced before the start of the 2024/25 campaign, by one manager owner Evangelos Marinakis knows very well.

Forest interested in Premier League boss

According to a report by the Daily Mail, Nottingham Forest are targeting a deal for Fulham boss Marco Silva should they decide to brutally part ways with Nuno during the off-season.

Fulham manager Marco Silva.

Silva, who like Nuno is Portuguese, has done an excellent job at Craven Cottage in recent seasons, pulling the club clear of any looming relegation threat, and transforming the Londoners into a solid Premier League side, with little investment from the owner.

The Fulham boss has previously worked under current Reds owner Marinakis, taking charge of Greek outfit Olympiacos for the 2015/16 campaign, before leaving for personal reasons with a win rate of 79% in his 48 games in charge.

The 46-year-old has been in charge of the Cottagers for nearly three years now, leading them back to the Premier League before keeping them up for two consecutive seasons – returning the club to a stable top-flight outfit.

However, the report does go on to state that he has a £9m release clause in his current deal, with any side free to negotiate with Silva should they trigger the deal within his current deal.

It would be an excellent coup for Forest should they get the deal over the line, with one player in particular set to benefit from any potential arrival of Silva in the East Midlands.

Why Silva would be an upgrade on Nuno

There’s no denying that Silva would be an upgrade on Nuno based on the 2023/24 campaign, with the Fulham manager blowing the former Wolves man out of the water.

The former Olympiacos boss has averaged 1.24 points per game in the Premier League over the last 12 months, 0.19 more than Nuno could muster despite taking charge of 17 games fewer.

Silva managed to lead his side to more than double the number of victories compared to Nuno, collecting 25 less and finishing 15 points behind the Cottagers come the conclusion of the campaign.

Although he would be an upgrade on the current managerial situation at the City Ground, the current boss would allow Chris Wood to reach the next level on Trentside.

The New Zealand international managed to score 14 goals in the Premier League this season – his joint-highest tally – a great return from a player who was seemingly written off at the start of the campaign.

However, the “unbelievable” Silva, as described by the outgoing Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, managed to turn striker Aleksandar Mitrovic into a force to be reckoned with during his team at Craven Cottage – with the Serbian scoring 57 times in just 68 appearances under the Portuguese boss in London.

He’s clearly capable of getting the best out of his centre forwards with his side scoring 55 goals in the 2023/24 season, a tally that was six higher than the Reds.

Whilst Nuno has done an excellent job in keeping Forest in the Premier League, fully deserving of another season to implement his system, there’s no denying Silva would be an upgrade on the current Reds boss, with Marinakis having a huge decision to make over the coming weeks.

Bangladesh are all systems go for two-game face-off against T20I-happy UAE

UAE are returning to their favourite format after a poor run in ODIs, while Bangladesh are gearing up for a busy season against some strong teams

Mohammad Isam16-May-2025

Are Bangladesh too top-heavy?

Bangladesh have picked five batters that have to be fitted into the top four. Tanzid Hasan is likely to open with Soumya Sarkar with captain Litton Das and Najmul Hossain Shanto likely to come in next. They will get first dibs before Parvez Hossain Emon, who is still in a development stage as a T20 opener. Towhid Hridoy, Shamim Hossain and Jaker Ali have strong strike rates that should come in handy in the later overs, before Rishad Hossain and Mahedi Hasan come in as the designated hitters.Bangladesh’s pace attack is also quite full, with Mustafizur Rahman the most experienced, and Tanzim Hasan the most versatile. Nahid Rana, Hasan Mahmud and Shoriful Islam are also in the squad, while left-arm spinner Tanvir Islam is the back-up spinner to Rishad and Mahedi.Jaker Ali has been Bangladesh’s key batter in the middle order across formats•AFP/Getty Images

Jaker the in-form batter

Jaker has already bailed out the Bangladesh batting several times in his first year in international cricket. He made a bright start against Sri Lanka last year before losing his way during the T20 World Cup, but made important runs in both Tests and T20Is on the West Indies tour, striking the ball sweetly, especially on the leg side.Related

  • NOC issue, fixture clash put Mustafizur's IPL participation in doubt

  • Litton: 'Not going to talk about a particular brand of cricket'

Jaker is a heavy run-getter in the middle-order in domestic cricket, which has now translated into good form at the highest level. There are more attractive strokemakers in the middle order, like Shamim and Hridoy, but Jaker is the one Bangladesh rely on the most these days. He has earned that reputation.

UAE would welcome T20 return

UAE will have little time to recalibrate to T20 mode after their trip for to the Netherlands for the Cricket World Cup League 2 matches, where they were beaten by both the hosts and Scotland, winning just one game in the last two weeks. Rahul Chopra’s century and Simranjeet Singh’s four-wicket haul in a match against Scotland were the only real high points from the tour for UAE. They should, however, feel better playing T20Is, their best format.Their good form in the format helped them qualify for this year’s Asia Cup after they dominated the Asian Cricket Council’s Premier Cup last year. But UAE haven’t really played a lot of cricket against the Full-Member teams. Afghanistan beat them 2-1 in their bilateral series in 2023-24. They also beat New Zealand in 2023, while they lost a similar two-match series against Bangladesh in 2022.Muhammad Waseem has been one of the star T20I batters since his debut•SLC

Can Waseem live up to his reputation?

Muhammad Waseem is the highest run-getter in T20Is in the world since his debut in 2021, but it hasn’t gone too well for him of late. Waseem went through the ILT20 without scoring a half-century – the last time he did was in December last year, against Qatar. He has also scored just a single ODI fifty in the last two years.Waseem, the UAE captain, had a very brief stint in the BPL, when he appeared for Chattogram Challengers in one game in the 2023-24 season. He made just one run then. However, Waseem is the most prominent UAE batter, so the Bangladesh analysts will rev up their laptops to show his footage to the bowlers. Waseem on song is a treat to watch, but it has been a long time since he has really taken on a top attack.

Sharjah is steaming

Night games will be welcomed by the players in Sharjah, which is very hot at the moment. The temperatures are in the high 30s (Celsius) this week.Bangladesh, though, have some idea about the Sharjah pitches, where they played the three ODIs against Afghanistan last year, while UAE don’t play much of their home T20Is in Sharjah. Generally, 170-180 would be seen as competitive totals; the two 180-plus scores were both comfortably defended in Sharjah in the last two years.

Newcastle United manager Howe says he was not spoken to by the FA, while reports ex-Chelsea head coach Potter was not approached either, with Thomas Tuchel eventually taking up the post. FA CEO Mark Bullingham claimed 10 coaches had been interviewed for the role, including some English candidates. But the report states the publication knows of at least seven of the top English and British coaches who were not interviewed – raising questions over Bullingham's claim. They add Everton's Sean Dyche, Leicester City's Steve Cooper, former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard, Wolves' Gary O'Neil and Southampton's Russell Martin were not interviewed by the FA.

    WHAT EDDIE HOWE SAID

When asked if he was interviewed for the England job, Howe said: "I was not. There was no contact from the FA."

After being questioned if this bothered him, he replied: "England have to do what is right for them and only they will know the processes they have gone through and the decisions they have made. I am certainly not the type of person that is going to analyse that. For me, it's about Newcastle and trying to win games and it's hard enough to do that if you are 100% focused, and I will always remain that way to my work. If you drop your levels, then the job becomes impossible and at no stage have I allowed myself to do that."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

While there may be concerns about transparency and going away from promoting British managerial talent, Tuchel is a serial winner and is arguably the best coach who was available. The Three Lions want to win the 2026 World Cup and they have a great chance with the group of players at their disposal and with the German at the helm.

Phil Hay "surprised" if Leeds don’t move for "outstanding" star this summer

Leeds United might be having to rapidly change their plans for the summer after Championship playoff heartbreak, but they still remain keen to add to their ranks ahead of the new season.

Firesale incoming at Leeds

A 1-0 defeat to Southampton at Wembley ensured that Leeds United will spend another season in England's second tier, and that is likely to have a knock on effect on their transfer business as their sorry play-off record continued.

Daniel Farke's side still owe £73.5m this summer in outstanding transfer fees from their time as a top-flight club, and it has been reported that they will have to raise up to £100m from player sales this summer, leaving a grim outlook at Elland Road.

Chief among those likely to leave is Championship player of the year Crysencio Summerville, while the likes of Wilfried Gnonto and Archie Gray have also been mooted as potential sales as the Yorkshire side look to balance their books.

There are also question marks over plenty of returning loanees, with Diego Llorente, Rasmus Kristensen, Max Wober, Marc Roca and Jack Harrison all set to return from spells away from the club.

But Leeds remain keen to formulate transfer plans of their own despite the ongoing uncertainty, and now they have been tipped to make one move in particular.

Leeds believe they can still win Rodon race

That comes with Leeds still keen on turning Joe Rodon's loan move into a permanent one despite their second tier status next season. The Welshman, who is contracted to Tottenham but spent the year at Elland Road, was a key part of Farke's defence this season and has become a fan favourite too.

He was dubbed "outstanding" by former Leeds man Jon Newsome back in September after one particular performance against Millwall.

"Outstanding. Absolutely outstanding. Joe Rodon was man of the match for me. He got his head on everything. He was a different class, he really, really was", Newsome told BBC Radio Leeds.

He went on to rack up 43 appearances, and Leeds Live report that those at Elland Road still hold hope that they can win the race for his services despite interest from teams in the top flight and an eight-figure price tag of around £10-15m.

The reliable Phil Hay has also backed Leeds to try and keep him beyond this summer despite rumoured interest from clubs that can offer Premier League football, admitting that the club should be doing everything to "get it done".

“I’d be really surprised if they didn’t have another go at Rodon, I really would. It will come down to what his alternatives are,” Hay said.

Leeds defender Joe Rodon.

“If you looked at him this season as a team who has just been promoted or you’re bottom-end of the Premier League, the money you’d have to pay for him, by Premier League standards, isn’t massive, he might be worth a punt.

“Tottenham tend to bargain pretty hard, but he’s been so good this season and so steady you’d absolutely say if you can get him back that fills the right centre-back, get it done.”

Though it will likely come down to Rodon's personal ambitions, he seems to have settled in well at Elland Road, and should Leeds be able to keep him he could be the man to help them back to the top flight next season.
