Why the women's World Cup was postponed by 12 months

The tournament was scheduled for February 2021 but has been pushed to the same window in 2022

The disparity in the level of preparedness of the teams is understood to be the key reason behind the ICC postponing the women’s ODI World Cup from 2021 to 2022, with an eye on maintaining the “integrity of the tournament”.The ICC has retained the February-March window for the tournament to be played in New Zealand, as well as the format which will feature the eight teams and 31 matches. It is understood the qualifiers would be played in July 2021 in Sri Lanka with ten contestants.Being one of the first countries to declare itself free of the Covid-19 pandemic, New Zealand was also the first to allow spectators at sporting venues. As of August 7, New Zealand has had a total of 1569 cases since the pandemic took force, with fewer than ten new cases reported since the start of the month. With that in mind the ICC would have been optimistic of hosting the event as per original schedule between February 6 and March 7, 2021.Biosecurity protocols had already been drawn up by the World Cup’s organising committee, in consultation with the ICC, New Zealand Cricket, and the New Zealand government. Spectators have been present at rugby games in the country, without limitation, since mid-June and there are few restrictions once visitors have completed their two-week quarantine. The teams for the World Cup were originally expected to arrive in New Zealand towards the end of January, but an earlier arrival had been planned, which would have impacted the cost considerations of the tournament. The ICC had even scheduled the qualifiers in the UAE in November, which would determine the remaining three vacant slots to join the five countries (Australia, England, South Africa, India, and hosts New Zealand) that had already qualified. However, ESPNcricinfo understands, several member countries, who attended the ICC Business Corporation meeting on Friday, raised concerns about the readiness of most of the eight participants. It is understood that representatives of the Pakistan Cricket Board and Bangladesh Cricket Board were concerned their teams would be under-cooked for the qualifiers, having played no cricket for several months. For other teams, too, the T20 World Cup was the last time they featured in any cricket. Also with not much women’s international cricket scheduled globally due to the pandemic, it would diminish the product and the competition. With the UAE being selective about allowing visitors from various countries, the ICC, it is understood, was also concerned about getting permission for countries playing in the qualifiers there.”We have taken the decision to move the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup to give players from every competing nation, the best opportunity to be ready for the world’s biggest stage and there is still a global qualifier to complete to decide the final three teams,” Manu Sawhney, the ICC chief executive said in a media release on Friday. “Moving the event by 12 months gives all competing teams the chance to play a sufficient level of cricket ahead of both the qualification event and leading into a Cricket World Cup so the integrity of the tournament is maintained.”

Sunderland ready new bid to sign international who snubbed them in January

da betobet: Sunderland are believed to be preparing a new offer to sign a versatile international player this summer, having snubbed a move to the Stadium of Light in January.

Sunderland transfer news

da bet nacional: The Black Cats will be hoping to be in a more stable position come the end of the season, once a new manager is appointed and Mike Dodds' disappointing period as interim manager comes to an end.

Whoever the next boss is may want to bring in players who can suit his style of play, and a number of players have been linked with moves to Sunderland in recent times.

Leicester City youngster Amani Richards has emerged as a target for the Championship side, having once been at Arsenal, and the 19-year-old could be looked at as one for the future. He scored 20 goals in 45 Under-18 Premier League appearances, also appearing for England at Under-15 and Under-16 level.

Wigan Athletic goalkeeper Sam Tickle is another player who has been linked with a switch to Sunderland, with the England Under-21 international someone the club have turned their attention to ahead of the summer transfer window. Now, it looks as though the Black Cats are looking to raid their Championship rivals for one of their current players.

Sunderland want versatile international player

According to Football Insider, Sunderland want to sign Birmingham City midfielder Paik Seung-Ho, with the Black Cats "plotting a move" for him at the end of the season, even though he only moved to his current club in January.

The report says "it is believed that the Black Cats pursued the South Korea international’s signature last winter and held talks with Seung-ho over a potential deal, but he opted for a move to Birmingham City".

Paik could be a strong option for Sunderland this summer, coming in as a player who is capable of shining in various different midfield positions, with such versatility a priceless asset for managers. Korean football writer Sungmo Lee has talked up his compatriot's qualities as a footballer in the past, outlining his versatile nature, saying:

"He surely has great skills and technique to play in England. He experienced Spanish and German leagues, and then developed physical abilities in the K-League. I believe he will definitely be one to watch for Birmingham and English football fans. Korean fans still have very high hopes in him, and he has potential to be a regular midfielder in Korea national team. He's still young, played in Spain, Germany and now in England, and based on how he'll play in England, he has a chance to be the next leader in Korea national team midfield."

Sunderland now eyeing move to sign former Arsenal gem

He has no weak foot.

ByTom Cunningham Apr 18, 2024

At 27, Paik is both experienced but also still young enough to enjoy plenty of good years at Sunderland – he has scored three goals in 15 caps for South Korea – and the fact that he has now got used to the pace and power of the Championship suggests that he shouldn't have to take time finding his feet for the Black Cats.

O’Neil can ditch Doherty by unleashing "outstanding" Wolves rock

da betcris: After such a positive start to the season, Wolverhampton Wanderers’ lack of depth is finally catching up to them.

da doce: In truth, Gary O’Neil has been dealt an almost impossible card, where he’s not only had to change personnel due to injuries but also systems.

gary-oneil-wolves

This was on display this week against Burnley, where the former Bournemouth manager ditched his usual 3-4-2-1 for a 4-4-1-1, even playing full-backs as wingers.

However, the boss seems to finally be getting a break as multiple players are set to return from injuries, with one individual allowing him to return to his trusty three-back and ditch Matt Doherty.

Why Matt Doherty should be dropped

Since returning to Wolves on a free transfer, the club icon has failed to produce similar feats to what he offered prior to his move to Tottenham Hotspur in 2020.

Four years on, and the 32-year-old has struggled to work his way into the side under O’Neil, starting just four times in 23 appearances and often coming off the bench for the last half an hour of games.

In truth, even when on the field, the Irish defender has failed to impress, and that was the case once again against Burnley, where he played as a right-midfielder.

Over the 90 minutes, the number two was rather sloppy on the ball, having a pass accuracy of 78% and losing possession on 13 separate occasions.

It was by far a disastrous display, but the boss will be thankful that one individual is set to return extremely soon, even potentially in time for Saturday’s home clash against West Ham United.

Wolves should regret summer signing who earns 5x more than Ait Nouri

The player is one of Wolves’ highest earners.

ByTom Lever Mar 14, 2024 Why Craig Dawson must be unleashed

The signing of Craig Dawson from the Hammers for just £3.3m has been an absolute bargain, with the defender becoming a key player under every manager.

The former West Bromwich Albion star has been a rock at the heart of the Wolves backline in particular this season, proving to be such a complete centre-half with an old-fashioned approach to defending.

Unfortunately, the 33-year-old has had to endure a spell on the sidelines recently after suffering a groin issue, but he’s set to return this weekend.

Dawson has started 25 Premier League matches this season as the central centre-back in a back three, and his recovery will certainly hand Wolves a huge boost, as not only will the defensive relationships be reinstalled, but the boss will also be able to return to his usual formation.

As you can see in the table above showcasing his statistics from the Premier League this season, the £45k-per-week Englishman is an “outstanding” defender, as dubbed by journalist Matt Law.

The best way to describe the number 15’s approach to defending is that he’s willing to put his head where it hurts for his team, as shown by his 4.8 clearances per game, which is a club high.

However, in recent years, he’s really developed into a fantastic ball-playing defender, controlling the tempo of the game and rarely giving the ball away cheaply, as shown by his touches and pass accuracy statistics.

On top of that, despite not wearing the captain’s armband, he is a true leader at the heart of the side, bringing organisation and experience when it matters most, which is a priceless attribute.

With Matheus Cunha also returning at the other end of the field, Wolves will be a much more balanced team, and if Dawson is fit, he will be guaranteed to start this weekend.

Raphael Macena é o 15º reforço do Mirassol nesta temporada.

Australia stars prepared for pay cuts, says Tim Paine

On Australia’s tour of Bangladesh, he says ‘you don’t have to be Einstein to realise it’s probably unlikely to go ahead’

Daniel Brettig31-Mar-2020Australia’s captain Tim Paine says the nation’s cricketers are aware the delay to their central contracting for next season may well lead to pay cuts, and they accept that such a move would be part of the need to “do our bit” to preserve the game amid the coronavirus pandemic. He has also conceded that the scheduled Test tour of Bangladesh is looking unlikely, with the ICC yet to deliberate on what will take place should the remaining series of the World Test Championship be delayed or cancelled due to the need to reset for whenever it is safe again to travel around the world for international series. While Cricket Australia has been highly fortunate in the timing of the pandemic, the governing body and its state association owners have been locked into deep discussions of how to prepare for the broad range of scenarios in front of them, ranging from minimal disruption of next summer to an outlook as bleak as that currently faced by the winter football codes.Paine, who awoke on Tuesday morning to find his wallet had been stolen after he left it in his car in Hobart after moving it outside to make room for a home gym set-up, said that the players were aware of the fact that they may need to make financial sacrifices to help shore up the wider game, under the terms of their collective agreement with CA that affords them around 26% of Australian Cricket Revenue each season.”Certainly discussions will start happening in the next week or so,” Paine said. “There’s obviously the delay in our list announcement if you like. Certainly if things happen similar to what’s happened to football and other sports, then we’ve certainly got to do our bit to make sure the game survives and remains really healthy for years to come.”If it comes to that, I’m sure that’s something that the players will look at. But there are bigger issues going on around the world at the moment than how much our sportsmen are going to get paid. That’ll be a small thing to us if that was to happen.”As for Bangladesh, Paine said that time was running short for the series to be able to be played as scheduled, leaving administrators to weigh up what to do next. “At this stage I think you don’t have to be Einstein to realise it’s probably unlikely to go ahead, particularly in June,” Paine said. “Whether it’s cancelled completely or its pushed back, we’re not quite sure at the moment, but it’s a couple of Test matches and if at the end of the day we have to miss them, then so be it.”I think whether some series have been cancelled, whether one’s going forward, or we are going to postpone them [we have to wait and see]… And maybe players are going to go through a period where we play five weeks’ cricket [at a stretch] if we can to complete the Test championship.”I think the players are certainly enjoying that points system and the fact that every Test match counts for something and you are playing towards a premiership if you like. I think all players will be in favour of trying to finish that in any way we can. But again if it doesn’t happen as I said there are bigger issues in the world and missing a few Test matches isn’t going to hurt us.”Similarly, Paine spoke with equanimity when asked about the likely need for fixture clashes between cricket and football codes should health restrictions for coronavirus be relaxed late this year.”If that’s what happens, that’s what happens. We’re going through some pretty different circumstances clearly around the world at the moment,” Paine said when asked about the Twenty20 World Cup going head-to-head with the AFL. “I think all sporting codes and businesses are going to have to do things slightly differently going forward. Again it’s about working together, I think footy and cricket can help each other as much as society can in general in difficult times. For me personally I’d quite like to see both if I’m totally honest.”This week brought an end to Steven Smith’s two-year ban from captaincy in the wake of the Newlands ball-tampering scandal, and Paine indicated that leadership would likely be a conversation topic with his No. 4 batsman. However he clarified that he had no intention to stand aside early to hand the captaincy reins back to Smith, also pointing out that there were a growing number of options around the national teams.”I haven’t had that conversation with Steve, I probably will at some stage no doubt,” Paine said. “But I think if you look at the fact he’s captaining Rajasthan Royals, captaining in The Hundred, it’s obviously something that he loves doing. So if Steve Smith decides that’s the way he wants to go, then I will fully support him in trying to do it again.”I know it’s a really big thing for JL [coach Justin Langer] and [CA chief executive] Kevin Roberts to make sure that we are developing a number of people when the role comes up, whether it’s the Test role or when [limited-overs captain] Aaron Finch decides that he’s had enough. We’ve got a number of guys to choose from.”At the moment, I’d like a Steve Smith who’s done it before or ones that are developing like a Travis Head or Alex Carey, Marnus Labuschagne. Pat Cummins is another one. We are starting to build a real depth and that’s what we want to do to make sure that when my time’s up, there are a number of options.”
