Newcastle seriously considering "elite" new target who's a set-piece wizard

da esport bet: Newcastle United hold a “strong interest” in signing an exciting set-piece expert this summer, according to a new report from reliable journalist John Percy.

Two new signings agreed at Newcastle

da brwin: It has been a tumultuous summer at St James’ Park, with the Magpies failing to bring in numerous transfer targets, being pipped by other Premier League clubs to the likes of James Trafford and Bryan Mbeumo, among others.

Still, there have been more positive signs in the past few days, with AC Milan centre-back Malick Thiaw agreeing a move to Newcastle, strengthening Eddie Howe’s defensive options, which has been a priority throughout the summer transfer window. He underwent a medical on Monday.

Meanwhile, the Magpies have also completed the signing of teenager Isaac Moran, who was formerly at Liverpool, with the 16-year-old midfielder coming in as a bright part of the club’s future.

It is important that further business is also completed between now and deadline day, not least signing a couple of strikers if Alexander Isak ends up sealing a move to Liverpool. Now, a positive update has emerged in that respect.

Newcastle have "strong interest" in set-piece wizard

According to Percy on X, Newcastle club chiefs have a “strong interest” in Leicester City attacking midfielder Bilal El Khannouss, amid interest from other Premier League clubs.

El Khannouss is a big talent who could impress greatly for the Magpies, not least with his set-piece quality that he outlined over the weekend during the opening round of Championship matches.

The 21-year-old registered both assists in Leicester’s 2-1 win at home to Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday, both from set-pieces, and he is arguably too good a footballer to be playing in the second tier of English football.

El Khannouss has been hailed as an “elite” player by Ben Mattinson as recently as last year, and while an attacking midfielder by trade, he can also take up a deeper role if needed, and can shine on the left wing.

Magpies supporters must be buoyed by this update…

At 21, there is still so much more to come from the Moroccan, too, and he could add some extra midfield guile that is arguably needed for Newcastle, giving Howe a different option to the likes of Joelinton and Joe Willock in the current squad.

Rajat Patidar fined for RCB's slow over-rate against Mumbai Indians

Hardik Pandya, Riyan Parag and Rishabh Pant are the other captains to have been fined for slow over-rates in IPL 2025

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Apr-20253:43

Rayudu: Patidar’s use of Bhuvi at the death was a masterstroke

Rajat Patidar, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) captain, has been fined INR 12 lakh for his side’s slow over-rate in the win over Mumbai Indians (MI) at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium on Monday night. This was RCB’s first slow-over-rate offence of IPL 2025.Patidar, RCB’s second-highest run-getting this season so far with 161 runs in four innings – behind Virat Kohli’s 164 from four innings – has been credited with bringing a lot of aggression to RCB’s batting in his first season as their captain. His captaincy has also come in for praise. After the win over MI, Ambati Rayudu pointed to the reintroduction of the experienced Bhuvneshwar Kumar at a crucial point in MI’s chase, calling it “a brilliant move” on ESPNcricinfo’s TimeOut show.Speaking about Patidar’s shuffling of his bowlers, Sanjay Bangar said, “He was pretty smart with that. To hold back Krunal for the 20th over made absolute sense, because you don’t want him to be bowling the 19th over with Josh Hazlewood only having ten or 12 to defend.” Rayudu also noticed the fact that Patidar “was at ease in the pressure situations” and that Kohli didn’t go up to him as often as he has done in the past to offer suggestions.RCB, who have won three of their six games so far, next play Delhi Capitals (DC) at home in Bengaluru on Thursday evening.Prior to this game, Hardik Pandya of MI, Riyan Parag of Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Rishabh Pant of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) were the other captains to be fined for over-rate fines.

More important than Isak & Barcola: Liverpool ramping up move for £45m star

da aposte e ganhe: And with that, Darwin Nunez is gone. Liverpool have taken the riches of Saudi and could now look to force through a move for Alexander Isak.

da bet7: The Reds have spent a colossal amount already this summer, that is no secret. Florian Wirtz arrived in a British record £116m deal from Bayer Leverkusen and Hugo Ekitike has also arrived for over £70m.

Yet, Isak, valued at £150m by Newcastle United, would be their biggest move yet. It’s just a pity for their sake that the Toon have no desire to sell their prized asset between now and September 1st.

Still, Isak isn’t the only priority target for the remaining weeks of the summer window.

Liverpool's priority targets

A move for Isak would be simply lovely, of course it would be, but despite the sale of Nunez – who departed for £46m – it would take something special for Newcastle to be convinced to sell.

The same feeling is felt when assessing the Bradley Barcola situation at PSG. Liverpool admire the winger (who doesn’t?), and could make their move after Luis Diaz headed for Bayern Munich.

Luis Diaz

However, the French sensation isn’t planning to force through a move as Isak has, and PSG are in no hurry to sell one of their key players.

One might argue that Liverpool look fine in forward areas, but at the back they need options. Marc Guehi could be that.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

This saga has been rumbling on for most of the summer now, so much so that over a month ago it was reported that the Crystal Palace centre-back was close to agreeing personal terms with the Anfield side.

Since then, things have gone quiet but the England international remains on Liverpool’s radar.

Crystal Palace's MarcGuehi

A new report from the Daily Mail this weekend suggests that Liverpool are due to hold further talks with Palace over signing Guehi after Sunday’s Community Shield.

The defender is in the last year of his deal at Selhurst Park and a year on from when the Eagles rejected a £65m bid from Newcastle, he could now be on the move for a fee of £45m.

Hear us out, Guehi is more important than Isak

Isak would be an almighty statement, don’t get us wrong. This is a player who Jamie Carragher described as “the best striker in the Premier League” and scored 27 goals in all competitions throughout 2024/25.

In the Premier League last term, only a certain Mo Salah found the net more regularly.

Yet, the sensational Swede isn’t the be-all and end-all as far as Arne Slot’s title hopes are concerned. Why? Well, Liverpool have already signed Ekitike – a player boasting immense potential – and they have Cody Gakpo who can play up top.

Of course, looking at Manchester City’s Erling Haaland, the Reds could do with a talismanic focal point but let’s not forget the aforementioned Salah. He’s still around and he’s ready to have a big season in front of goal again.

As for Barcola, we can make a similar argument here. Liverpool may require another wide option after Diaz left Merseyside behind but they do have options. Once again, both Ekitike and Gakpo could play in that role.

But, in defence, Liverpool look rather barren. Out wide they have strengthened significantly with Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong bolstering the full-back areas but with Joe Gomez injured, Jarrel Quansah having left and Ibou Konate potentially off to Real Madrid, things do look sparse in central defence.

Jarell Quansah for Liverpool

Indeed, throughout pre-season so far, we’ve seen Wataru Endo, Trey Nyoni and Ryan Gravenberch all start games as a centre-half.

For a team harbouring ambitions of retaining their Premier League title, this isn’t okay. After all, let’s look at Arsenal. While they’ve had problems building a cohesive attack, their defensive depth is remarkable.

At right-back they have Ben White and Jurrien Timber, at left-back they have Riccardo Calafiori and Myles Lewis-Skelly. In the middle William Saliba, Gabriel, Cristhian Mosquera and Jakub Kiwior make up a fantastic quartet.

Arsenal'sGabrielMagalhaes and WilliamSaliba

At Anfield, they can only dream of such defensive luxuries. However, with the arrival of Guehi, it would suitably strengthen what looks like Liverpool’s biggest weakness heading into the new season.

Isak and Barcola would be captivating additions but the Palace captain is a ready-made option who would immediately strengthen the backline at Slot’s disposal.

Already described as “England’s player” during the last European Championships by analyst Ben Mattinson, Guehi is most notably an excellent reader of the play, ranking inside the best 4% of centre-backs in Europe’s top five leagues for passes blocked with 0.96 per 90 minutes.

Guehi is also brilliant and bringing the ball out from the back. Only 20% of positionally similar players in the continent’s best divisions have registered more successful take-ons over the last year. Is it really any surprise that reporter Bobby Manzi suggested he is a “monster in defence”?

At the age of 25, he’s also approaching his prime and it feels like he’s got the best years of his career ahead of him.

So, while Isak and Barcola would be statement additions that send shockwaves through the rest of the Premier League, Guehi must be the priority. Liverpool’s backline looks incomplete but the Crystal Palace stalwart would complete the jigsaw.

Vamos nessa…

Tudo remetia a efemérides.

E a FPF decidiu o Pacaembu.

Another Tomori situation: Maresca at risk of losing the "future of Chelsea"

da dobrowin: One of the most interesting debates in English football is which clubs, such as Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal, have the best academy. It is often a debate that can be seen raging on social media and for good merit. Those three clubs in particular have produced some legendary players.

da brdice: Arsenal’s Hale End academy has produced some legendary players. The likes of Tony Adams, who went on to captain the Gunners, as well as England, is one of the most famous academy products ever produced by Arsenal. The likes of Ashley Cole and Cesc Fabregas also came through at Hale End, and Bukayo Saka is a more recent success story.

United’s academy needs no introduction. From the Busby Babes to the Class of ‘92, the Red Devils have produced some simply phenomenal players, including the likes of Duncan Edwards and Paul Scholes. In recent days, talents such as Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford have been brought through, with academy stars Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho winning United the FA Cup.

Chelsea has also produced some exceptional players at their Cobham base over the years. Club legends like Ray Wilkins and John Terry came through the Blues’ academy, and recently the likes of Conor Gallagher are making waves at Stamford Bridge. However, there is one emerging product who could depart this summer, echoing the departure of another academy player a few years ago.

Who could leave Chelsea this summer

The player in question here is Chelsea and England international Levi Colwill. The young centre-back came through the academy at Chelsea but could be on his way out of the club this summer in search of regular game time.

At least, that is according to an article by 90min earlier this week, who claim Colwill is 'seeking assurances' from new Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca about the amount of game time he will get next season, before deciding on his future. The article explains that the 21-year-old would like to be assured he is 'the number one choice' for left centre-back next season under Maresca.

If Colwill was to depart Stamford Bridge this summer, he would not be short of suitors. The youngster is thought to be a target of Chelsea’s Premier League rivals Liverpool, as well as French champions Paris Saint Germain.

Whilst a price for Colwill is yet to be named, he is valued at £42.5m by Football Observatory. It could well take anywhere from that value and upwards to strike a deal for the defender this summer.

Why Colwill’s departure would be bad news

Should Colwill depart Chelsea this summer, it would be reminiscent of a sale the Blues commissioned a few years ago when Fikayo Tomori left London to join Italian giants AC Milan.

The former Derby County loanee joined the 19-time Scudetto winners in 2021 for £25m. Like Colwill, Tomori came through the academy at Chelsea, before struggling for regular minutes and eventually departing.

A potential Colwill sale this summer could see plenty of similarities to the sale of Tomori three years ago. Last season, the former Brighton loanee played 23 times in the Premier League for Chelsea, just slightly more than Tomori, who played just 15 times in his final full season at Stamford Bridge.

It may be surprising that Colwill featured so little, given his former manager Mauricio Pochettino was full of praise for him last season. Following a 4-3 pre-season victory against Brighton last summer, the Argentine claimed Colwill could one day be “one of the greatest centre-backs in England”.

Thus, his limited chances last season were frustrating, and whilst he was injured at times, Colwill – who has been described as the "future of Chelsea" by journalist Felix Johnston – was an unused substitute for each of last four Premier League games.

Since leaving Stamford Bridge, Tomori has already won the Scudetto, with the Serie A becoming increasingly competitive each season. Chelsea would be careful not to see a repeat of the sale if Colwill is to join the likes of PSG,

As his former boss implied, the youngster could become one of the greatest defenders in the Premier League if he stays where he is.

Vyshak 'changes the game' on a night Siraj makes the wrong decisions

It was “brilliant planning” on Punjab Kings’ part to hold back the impact sub till after Gujarat Titans had made theirs, Varun Aaron says

ESPNcricinfo staff26-Mar-20251:49

What’s ailing Mohammed Siraj?

Lots of fast bowlers were in action in the IPL 2025 game between Gujarat Titans (GT) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Tuesday night. One of them was a seasoned veteran, an international player, Mohammed Siraj. The other isn’t a rookie by any yardstick, but was playing just his 12th IPL game in his third year, and doesn’t really have a significant body of work at this level to raise his profile, Vijaykumar Vyshak. On the night, with his team’s planning outdoing that of the opposition, Vyshak “changed the game”, while Siraj ended with 4-0-54-0.”It’s his first game in this IPL. To pass judgment, you have to wait at least four to five games,” Varun Aaron said of Siraj on ESPNcricinfo’s TimeOut. “Yes, Siraj has been a bit expensive in the beginning, but he can also win you games with the ball. Being under Ashish Nehra [GT head coach] now, this year could be one of the better years for him. He will learn from tonight, but his decision-making towards the end was not the best.”It really wasn’t. Bowling the last over of the PBKS innings, Siraj went short and wide, swinging in and full, a yorker on off, short and wide, then a wide down the leg side, inswing on leg, and short and wide again. The three that were sent short and wide of off all went for fours. Two of the other deliveries went fours too, as Shashank Singh singlehandedly took 23 runs from the over. The difference between the two sides in the end was 11 runs.Related

Aaron and Ambati Rayudu felt it came down to Siraj not trusting what came naturally to him.Rayudu: “[Siraj] is predominantly an inswing bowler. Today he bowled one ball [that was] seam up and inswing; the rest were all trying to bowl his outswingers, which he [has started doing] recently. But I think he has to get back to his natural ability to bowl that inswing and then maybe try and get one-odd ball to outswing.”Aaron: “We actually did an analysis of this last year on Star Sports […] he bowled 20% more outswing balls last year and he didn’t have a good IPL, compared to the previous year, when he bowled more inswing. I agree Siraj is way better when he is bowling inswing, and the odd outswing, because his outswing isn’t like a [Mohammed] Shami outswing, it doesn’t leave people late.”Rayudu: “It swings quite early, because he’s doing that [indicating how Siraj’s wrist doesn’t come down in a straight line]; he is not releasing it straight like that [indicating more of a Shami action].”A part of the IPL from 2017, Siraj had a very good IPL in 2023 (19 wickets with an economy rate of 7.52), but in IPL 2024, he got just 15 wickets from 14 bowling innings and conceded runs at 9.19. This season hasn’t started well with his new team either.Which is the opposite of what happened with Vyshak, for his new team.’Just get Vyshak out here’But, with Vyshak, there was some smart planning on the part of the team’s think tank that made sure it worked right.PBKS didn’t sub out Priyansh Arya for Vyshak till the 13th over of the GT chase. The ball after Arshdeep Singh removed B Sai Sudharsan, GT subbed out Prasidh Krishna and subbed in Sherfane Rutherford, a left-hand basher. Three balls later, at the end of the over, Vyshak was subbed in for Arya.”I think Vyshak’s entry [was the turning point],” Rayudu said. “He changed the game.”1:36

Was subbing in Vyshak a masterstroke?

In his dressing-room debrief after the game, Ricky Ponting said, “I was sitting there [in the dugout] and it was like, oh, they need 13 an over, they need 14 an over; sent a message out to Shreyas, ‘mate, what do you want to do?’ And he said straightaway, ‘Just get Vyshak out here, he’ll nail a couple of overs of yorkers and we’ll close the game.’ And you [Vyshak] were the one that changed the game. So congratulations.”Curiously, as Rutherford walked to the crease, and Arshdeep went back to the top of his mark, it looked like he was pointing out to his captain, Shreyas Iyer, that Vyshak needed to be brought in. Irrespective of what the sequence of events was, he came in.Vyshak bowled the 15th (five runs), the 17th (five runs) and the 19th, which was expensive as he went for 18. But the first two overs, at a critical time in the chase, was certainly impactful, as Rutherford and Jos Buttler couldn’t really break free.”They [PBKS] might have been waiting for the GT impact sub, because if it was [Glenn] Phillips, then they could have got on [left-arm spinner Harpreet] Brar. Because, obviously, it would have been much easier for Rutherford to get away with Brar bowling from the other side.”End of the day, I think Vyshak’s role is very much [that of] the death-bowling specialist. If not wide yorkers, his knuckleballs, which are very handy.”It was brilliant planning by Punjab. They held their nerve. This is when you bring an IPL-winning captain [Iyer] and a coach [Ricky Ponting] together, there is a bit of sense of calm in pressure.”

Craig Young’s four-wicket haul appeared to put Ireland on the ascendancy, but No. 6 Tony Munyonga dragged Zimbabwe out of a hole with an unbeaten 43 to seal a tight three-wicket win for the hosts in Harare.Their victory with four balls to spare now gives Zimbabwe an unassailable 1-0 lead in the three-game series with the first T20I washed out and the third encounter remaining on February 25.Young turns perfect replacementThe quick was not in the T20I squad originally, but brought in late to replace the injured Mark Adair. Adair had been Ireland’s best bowler in the ODIs, but Young’s new-ball spell made up for his absence. His first ball of the evening was a short ball that Zimbabwe opener Tadiwanashe Marumani half-heartedly pulled towards short fine leg. Three balls later, he dug another one in and took Wessly Madhevere’s outside edge to Paul Stirling. Next over, Brian Bennett sliced one to deep backward point and Ireland had the early edge.Later, when Ireland were desperate for a wicket, his dismissal of Tashinga Musekiwa at what seemed to be a crucial point in the game left him with figures of 4 for 24.Zimbabwe’s lower-middle order steps upWith the early collapse, the experienced pair of Raza and Burl were the perfect batters to follow. Ireland kept the pressure up, but Raza grinded it out with only two fours in his 27-ball 22. He could afford to with a middling target.Burl’s 27 at a strike rate of 135 kept the Zimbabwe innings in touch with the rate. Ireland, though, dismissed both in quick succession with Burl edging Harry Tector behind and Raza hitting down long off’s throat to leave Zimbabwe at 64 for 5.Munyonga, though, showed great maturity in navigating a tricky period by contributing in the 33-run sixth-wicket stand with Musekiwa (15) and another 15 runs with Wellington Masakadza. No. 9 Richard Ngarava struck two crucial fours late in the 19th over off Young before Munyonga hit the winning runs with a thrashing through the covers.Ireland stutter after rain breakAfter losing Stirling early, the other opener Lorcan Tucker (46) held fort in the company of No. 3 Tector (28) to lift the innings. Tector, the more enterprising of the two, fell in the eighth over to Raza trying to find a big shot, leaving Ireland at 59 for 2.But Tucker and No. 4 Curtis Campher failed to gain momentum like Tector, adding only 40 runs in their 5.5 overs together and their dismissals shortly after the rain break came in a phase when Zimbabwe’s bowlers kept things tight.Blessing Muzarabani, Trevor Gwandu and Raza all went for under six an over. Gwandu’s dismissals of Tucker, George Dockrell and Neil Rock crippled Ireland’s pursuit of a big flourish, while Raza broke two dangerous partnerships. Ireland scored only 16 in the last three overs to finish on a below-par 137 for 8.
