Leeds already have their next Dallas in "unbelievable" star who Farke loves

da fezbet: Everyone at Leeds United would have felt gutted when Stuart Dallas announced his retirement from football this week, the 32-year-old Whites icon bowing out of the game after an extensive two-year period out with a now career-ending knee injury.

da supremo: The Northern Irishman was once a key part of the Marcelo Bielsa machine at Elland Road, hanging up his boots having helped himself to 28 goals and 18 assists from 267 Leeds games.

The time for sentimentality is obviously now, with an outpouring of love coming his way from fans and ex-players alike after the tragic news was revealed.

Yet, in the long-term, Leeds will hope that this bright young star – who has already taken the first team by storm this campaign – can become the next Dallas with time.

The next Stuart Dallas

Dallas might well now pass the baton on for Archie Gray to star for Leeds in a similar fashion, with the departing number 15 adept at playing both in midfield and at the back which Gray has also shown he's capable of doing this season.

Gray has been an absolute revelation for the West Yorkshire titans in the second tier, having accumulated 45 appearances this season with 40 of those coming in the Championship at just 18 years of age.

He hasn't looked like a deer in the headlights when he's been thrown into the thick of the action either, Farke trusting Gray to be his starting right-back for the majority of the season despite a midfield role being his preferred position from his youth days.

28 of those appearances Gray has made this campaign have come from this now familiar right-back role, with Dallas equally as adaptable when called upon to play at both full-back positions if a midfield spot wasn't needing to be plugged.

The Northern Irish star would line up in the back four 101 times for Leeds throughout his celebrated stay at Elland Road, with the Whites now hoping Gray can go down as a club legend in the same vein.

This has led to many waxing lyrical about Gray and how far he could go in the game, described as being "unbelievable" by Not the Top 20 podcast Ali Maxwell earlier this campaign, having also been dubbed "outstanding" by that man Farke.

The 18-year-old could well have his head turned by the likes of Liverpool swooping for his services again potentially this summer, but the Championship promotion hopefuls will attempt to bat away any clubs circling for their homegrown talent in a bid to make him an eventual hall-of-famer.

Transfer interest in Gray

Wild rumours coming out of West Yorkshire indicate that interested parties for Gray now also include Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, with a sizeable price tag of £50m now being slapped above his head.

This shows you how much Leeds want to keep a firm grip on their breakout teenage sensation, already rating him as being worth more than the £45m they sold Kalvin Phillips for at the peak of his Whites career.

With Leeds running in Gray's blood – the 18-year-old being the great nephew of Whites icon Eddie Gray – there will be a temptation on the flexible number 22's mind to stay put at Elland Road and insert himself into the history books like Dallas managed before an abrupt injury stopped it all.

There's no doubt a very real tinge of sadness about how Dallas' decorated time with the Whites has ended, but with emerging talents such as Gray attempting to lead Leeds back to the Premier League where the club legend managed to excel in the past, the future looks bright regardless of this bleak development.

Leeds were bled dry by Bielsa signing who earned 2x James' wage

Leeds United will still be having nightmares about how much this deal cost them.

O’Neil can ditch Doherty by unleashing "outstanding" Wolves rock

da betcris: After such a positive start to the season, Wolverhampton Wanderers’ lack of depth is finally catching up to them.

da doce: In truth, Gary O’Neil has been dealt an almost impossible card, where he’s not only had to change personnel due to injuries but also systems.

gary-oneil-wolves

This was on display this week against Burnley, where the former Bournemouth manager ditched his usual 3-4-2-1 for a 4-4-1-1, even playing full-backs as wingers.

However, the boss seems to finally be getting a break as multiple players are set to return from injuries, with one individual allowing him to return to his trusty three-back and ditch Matt Doherty.

Why Matt Doherty should be dropped

Since returning to Wolves on a free transfer, the club icon has failed to produce similar feats to what he offered prior to his move to Tottenham Hotspur in 2020.

Four years on, and the 32-year-old has struggled to work his way into the side under O’Neil, starting just four times in 23 appearances and often coming off the bench for the last half an hour of games.

In truth, even when on the field, the Irish defender has failed to impress, and that was the case once again against Burnley, where he played as a right-midfielder.

Over the 90 minutes, the number two was rather sloppy on the ball, having a pass accuracy of 78% and losing possession on 13 separate occasions.

It was by far a disastrous display, but the boss will be thankful that one individual is set to return extremely soon, even potentially in time for Saturday’s home clash against West Ham United.

Wolves should regret summer signing who earns 5x more than Ait Nouri

The player is one of Wolves’ highest earners.

ByTom Lever Mar 14, 2024 Why Craig Dawson must be unleashed

The signing of Craig Dawson from the Hammers for just £3.3m has been an absolute bargain, with the defender becoming a key player under every manager.

The former West Bromwich Albion star has been a rock at the heart of the Wolves backline in particular this season, proving to be such a complete centre-half with an old-fashioned approach to defending.

Unfortunately, the 33-year-old has had to endure a spell on the sidelines recently after suffering a groin issue, but he’s set to return this weekend.

Dawson has started 25 Premier League matches this season as the central centre-back in a back three, and his recovery will certainly hand Wolves a huge boost, as not only will the defensive relationships be reinstalled, but the boss will also be able to return to his usual formation.

As you can see in the table above showcasing his statistics from the Premier League this season, the £45k-per-week Englishman is an “outstanding” defender, as dubbed by journalist Matt Law.

The best way to describe the number 15’s approach to defending is that he’s willing to put his head where it hurts for his team, as shown by his 4.8 clearances per game, which is a club high.

However, in recent years, he’s really developed into a fantastic ball-playing defender, controlling the tempo of the game and rarely giving the ball away cheaply, as shown by his touches and pass accuracy statistics.

On top of that, despite not wearing the captain’s armband, he is a true leader at the heart of the side, bringing organisation and experience when it matters most, which is a priceless attribute.

With Matheus Cunha also returning at the other end of the field, Wolves will be a much more balanced team, and if Dawson is fit, he will be guaranteed to start this weekend.

Sunderland ready new bid to sign international who snubbed them in January

da betobet: Sunderland are believed to be preparing a new offer to sign a versatile international player this summer, having snubbed a move to the Stadium of Light in January.

Sunderland transfer news

da bet nacional: The Black Cats will be hoping to be in a more stable position come the end of the season, once a new manager is appointed and Mike Dodds' disappointing period as interim manager comes to an end.

Whoever the next boss is may want to bring in players who can suit his style of play, and a number of players have been linked with moves to Sunderland in recent times.

Leicester City youngster Amani Richards has emerged as a target for the Championship side, having once been at Arsenal, and the 19-year-old could be looked at as one for the future. He scored 20 goals in 45 Under-18 Premier League appearances, also appearing for England at Under-15 and Under-16 level.

Wigan Athletic goalkeeper Sam Tickle is another player who has been linked with a switch to Sunderland, with the England Under-21 international someone the club have turned their attention to ahead of the summer transfer window. Now, it looks as though the Black Cats are looking to raid their Championship rivals for one of their current players.

Sunderland want versatile international player

According to Football Insider, Sunderland want to sign Birmingham City midfielder Paik Seung-Ho, with the Black Cats "plotting a move" for him at the end of the season, even though he only moved to his current club in January.

The report says "it is believed that the Black Cats pursued the South Korea international’s signature last winter and held talks with Seung-ho over a potential deal, but he opted for a move to Birmingham City".

Paik could be a strong option for Sunderland this summer, coming in as a player who is capable of shining in various different midfield positions, with such versatility a priceless asset for managers. Korean football writer Sungmo Lee has talked up his compatriot's qualities as a footballer in the past, outlining his versatile nature, saying:

"He surely has great skills and technique to play in England. He experienced Spanish and German leagues, and then developed physical abilities in the K-League. I believe he will definitely be one to watch for Birmingham and English football fans. Korean fans still have very high hopes in him, and he has potential to be a regular midfielder in Korea national team. He's still young, played in Spain, Germany and now in England, and based on how he'll play in England, he has a chance to be the next leader in Korea national team midfield."

Sunderland now eyeing move to sign former Arsenal gem

He has no weak foot.

ByTom Cunningham Apr 18, 2024

At 27, Paik is both experienced but also still young enough to enjoy plenty of good years at Sunderland – he has scored three goals in 15 caps for South Korea – and the fact that he has now got used to the pace and power of the Championship suggests that he shouldn't have to take time finding his feet for the Black Cats.

Nottinghamshire maintain unbeaten start as Alex Hales fires in small chase

Leicestershire struggle to post 123 for 8 after choosing to bat first on slow surface

Luke Fletcher celebrates a wicket for Notts•Getty Images

An explosive start by Alex Hales enabled Notts Outlaws to maintain their unbeaten start to the Vitality Blast. Hales made 44 from only 16 balls to help Notts towards a five-wicket victory over Leicestershire Foxes in their North Group clash at Trent Bridge. The opener smashed four fours and four sixes in his brief stay as the hosts made short work of a victory target of 124. Although the Foxes removed Joe Clarke and Tom Moores in quick succession, captain Dan Christian plundered an unbeaten 33 from only 26 balls to guarantee the points.Leicestershire had struggled to find any momentum during their innings and were restricted to 123 for 8 in their allotted 20 overs. Gareth Delaney top-scored with 25, whilst Jake Ball nabbed 2 for 17 from four impressive overs for Notts.Hales went on the offensive, despite the loss of partner Chris Nash in the first over of the chase, before falling to a boundary catch off Delany. Clarke was dropped twice in making 19 but despite his eventual dismissal the home side weren’t overly stretched as they cantered towards the finishing line.Ben Duckett, playing his 100 T20 match, chopped o nto his stumps to give Delany a second wicket but by then Christian was into his stride and he clubbed the same bowler for his second maximum to tie the scores before stroking the winning run with 30 deliveries still remaining.Earlier, the Foxes struggled on a sluggish wicket after winning the toss and choosing to bat first. Only eight runs were on the board when Harry Dearden fell to Ball in the third over.Irish international Delany muscled Samit Patel over the ropes at long-on but fell in the same over to a catch by Steven Mullaney, who then bagged an even better one off his own bowling to remove Foxes’ skipper Colin Ackermann. George Rhodes was then the unlucky victim of a mix-up with Lewis Hill and was run out as the innings began to unravel quickly.Imad Wasim, back for a second season with the Outlaws after recent international duty with Pakistan, bagged figures of 2 for 24. He was indebted to a juggling catch from Nash to dismiss Arron Lilley and then hung on to a return offering from Tom Taylor himself, as the Foxes limped towards the end of their allocation.Notts Outlaws recaptured the top spot in the North Group with their victory, although they remain level on eight points with Lancashire Lightning. Their first defeat of the competition leaves Leicestershire Foxes on five points at the halfway stage of the qualifying round.

Umar Akmal given harsh penalty because of lack of remorse

“He did admit the questionable incidents yet was offering frivolous justifications for non-reporting”

Umar Farooq 27-Apr-2020Given that the charge against Umar Akmal dealt with a failure to report corrupt approaches, it was expected that his decision to not challenge it would lead to a relatively light sanction. Akmal, however, was banned for three years for this breach of PCB’s anti-corruption code. This is unprecedented. In similar cases in the past, Mohammad Irfan sat out for six months, while in 2017, Mohammad Nawaz was given a two-month ban. In recent examples outside Pakistan, Shakib Al Hasan – among the senior-most players in the game – was banned for two years with one year of that sentence suspended.Akmal had been charged by the PCB on two counts of breaching their anti-corruption code ahead of this year’s PSL. ESPNcricinfo understands that in his reply, Akmal did admit the violation, saying that he was approached by two men on separate occasions. He did not inform the authorities of these meetings, which went against protocol and led to his suspension.Akmal, then, chose to forego the right to a hearing before the anti-corruption tribunal, where he could have pleaded innocence or contested the charges. So his case went directly to the PCB disciplinary panel. In this hearing, however, he did plead not guilty. Appearing without a lawyer, Akmal tried to wriggle out of a tricky situation by justifying his failure to report the approaches. His lack of remorse, despite accepting the charges, resulted in the severe punishment. His justification was understood to be unconvincing and was cited as a “farce”.”He was repeatedly attempting to justify his folly,” Taffazul Rizvi, the PCB counsel, told the media after the hearing. “His reply was confused, he neither accepted his position nor denied it. He did admit the questionable incidents yet was offering frivolous justifications for non-reporting. When you admit violation, you leave yourself to the mercy of the tribunal. There is no general exception in the anti-corruption code that you report on your wish or convenience. You either report or do not report.”Rizvi gave the example of left-arm quick Irfan, who had been slapped with a 12-month ban (with six months suspended) after unconditionally pleading guilty over his failure to report two corrupt approaches. Rizvi also felt that the duration of bans for such failures should be increased.”Even today, the honourable judge asked him [Akmal] on a clear note if he accepts his indiscretions, but he insisted on justifying his failures,” Rizvi said. “He was charged on two counts, for two different unrelated incidents while Mohammad Irfan and others had completely different cases. Irfan got lesser ban because he had accepted his mistake and agreed to the imposed sanctioned. But Umar Akmal didn’t accept his omission and tried to justify why he didn’t report.”This three-year ban on the basis of non-reporting is considered appropriate. The PCB was asking for a stiffer sentence. It’s high time that duration of the ban should be increased because it’s very clear that players are not learning the lessons as much as they should have. So as far as the legal side is concerned, I am very satisfied as the duration of the ban is reasonable, justified and proportionate.”

Spurs line up move for £43m Richarlison upgrade

da betcris: It's been a rough few weeks for Tottenham Hotspur as four Premier League defeats in a row have left them seven points off Aston Villa in the final Champions League spot.

da apostaganha: Ange Postecoglou's team looks entirely different from the one that went ten games unbeaten at the start of the campaign. Still, considering it's the Australian's first season in charge, it would be unfair to chastise him too much.

Richarlison for Tottenham.

Moreover, with the summer transfer window just around the corner, he'll have another opportunity to further shape the team into one he wants to manage, and based on recent reports, he could soon have an upgrade on the injury-prone Richarlison.

Tottenham transfer news

According to a report from German publication BILD (via TEAMtalk), Tottenham Hotspur are positioning themselves to hijack Liverpool's pursuit of Egypt international Omar Marmoush this summer.

The report has revealed that the Eintracht Frankfurt striker has caught the attention of both the Lilywhites and Merseysiders following his successful season in Germany's top flight, and as such, his side are preparing for his departure in the coming months.

While this is great news for the North Londoners, it won't be a cheap signing to complete, with the report claiming that Frankfurt won't authorise the sale unless offers of around €50m – £43m – are made.

Omar Marmoush for Frankfurt.

It would undoubtedly represent a sizeable investment in the team from Daniel Levy and Co, but with goals seriously drying up in recent weeks, it looks like it would be one worth making.

How Marmoush compares to Richarlison

Now, if Spurs were to get ahead of the Reds and sign Marmoush in the summer, the fact that his primary and most effective, position in the team is as the central number nine would certainly threaten Richarlison's standing in the side, but how do the pair stack up against one another?

Well, from a straightforward goals and assists perspective, it's the Frankfurt ace who comes out ahead with 16 goals and six assists in 39 games, meaning he averages a goal involvement every 1.7 games.

In comparison, the former Everton star has scored 12 goals and provided four assists in 31 games so far this term, averaging a goal involvement every 1.9 games for Postecoglou's Lilywhites.

Unfortunately for the Brazilian, while putting up a bit more of a fight, he falls even further behind his potential replacement when comparing their underlying numbers.

The positives are that he produces a higher non-penalty expected goal and assists figure, scores more non-penalty goals, provides more assists, and takes more shots per 90, but in all other relevant metrics, he comes out a clear second-best.

For example, the Egyptian produces more progressive passes and carries, maintains a better passing accuracy, produces more shot and goal-creating actions, completes significantly more take-ons, is dispossessed less often, makes more ball recoveries, and a higher percentage of his shots are on target, all per 90.

Another crucial factor to consider is the players' injury records. While the Spurs forward has missed 31 games through injury in the last three seasons, the "tireless" Marmoush, as described by Eintracht boss Dino Toppmoller, has missed just 11 games in the same time, suggesting he'd be a far more reliable option over the course of a campaign.

Ultimately, Richarlison is a talented striker who could continue to be useful for Tottenham, but with a better injury record, a more productive season behind him, and underlying numbers that show the level of his all-round game, Levy should sign Marmoush as an upgrade in the summer.
