Man Utd preparing £62m+ bid for "monster" new defensive partner for De Ligt

da pinup bet: It has been a very poor start to the season for Manchester United and Erik ten Hag, and it appears they could already be putting plans in place for January, as the Red Devils eye a deal for a new defender, according to a new report.

Man Utd must drop 4/10 star who Neville thought was "awful"

Manchester United resemble a sinking ship under Erik ten Hag’s stewardship.

ByMatt Dawson Sep 30, 2024 Man Utd transfer news

da esoccer bet: Defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon piled even more misery on to Ten Hag and raised even more doubts about his future at the club, with a testing week ahead with trips to Porto and Aston Villa to come. The United hierarchy will be looking for an instant turn of results, but it appears that Dan Ashworth and Jason Wilcox already have their eye on what business they would like to conclude in January.

The Red Devils have been linked with a move for Nico Williams in 2025, with INEOS reportedly willing to throw everything at the deal to get it completed as they try to beat Barcelona to his signature. Meanwhile, as well as looking at Williams, United are also keeping an eye on Ruben van Bommel, following his rise through at AZ Alkmaar. The Dutchman is the son of PSV and Champions League legend Mark van Bommel, who also played for Bayern Munich, AC Milan, and Barcelona.

Spain star Nico Williams

While United keep their options open for attacking additions in 2025, the Red Devils also appear to be looking to reinforce their defence, despite adding Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt in the summer.

Man Utd prepare £62m+ bid for new centre-back

According to a report from Spain, Manchester United are looking to beat Liverpool to the signing of Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace. The defender was hot property during the summer transfer window with Newcastle United chasing his signature, but he remains a Palace player.

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi

This report states that Man Utd are looking for quick solutions to their defence given their poor start to the campaign and have identified Guehi as a “serious target”. There is apparently talk of a €75m (over £62m) bid being prepared as a matter of “urgency”, while the report even claims United and Liverpool are “preparing offers that could break the market”.

Guehi, who was labelled as “great” by John Stones at Euro 2024 and a “monster” by Palace reporters for his performances in Germany, was the subject of bids of around £70 million from Newcastle in the summer, so United may well have to up the reported opening offer even further if they truly wish to get a deal done.

Guehi, who is said to be on a weekly wage of £50,000, has been at Crystal Palace since 2021, when he joined the club from fellow London side Chelsea. The defender’s importance at Selhurst Park has grown and grown in the last few seasons, and during the summer he was recognised on the international stage as he stepped up for England and replaced the injured Harry Maguire.

He could be seen as a replacement for Maguire once again, as the defender is in the final year of his contract at Old Trafford, fighting Lisandro Martinez for the chance to be the permanent starter alongside De Ligt.

Slot should drop Salah by unleashing Liverpool ace for the very first time

da apostebet: Maybe we all got a little carried away. After all, it was only Old Trafford. Liverpool faced a sterner test in the form of Nuno Espirito Santo’s Nottingham Forest, and they did not pass.

da bet7k: Nine points from 12 is hardly a poor return for Arne Slot’s opening phase as Liverpool boss, but the Dutchman must ensure that a blip does not devolve into a blue streak to cast the honeymoon period into long faded memory.

The games are going to come thick and fast, with the new and larger Champions League mixing with the Carabao Cup to perch atop the unceasing top-flight action.

Liverpool were throttled by their own lacklustre performance, dredging nightmarish memories of the backend of last season. Still, credit must be handed to Forest, who were coherent and tenacious and took their chance when it mattered. Their unbeaten start, at the expense of Slot’s, extends.

And so we now turn away from the Premier League for the first time under Slot’s wing. The Champions League returns, with AC Milan awaiting Liverpool at the San Siro, and the Reds might want to consider the somewhat dramatic move to drop Mohamed Salah on Tuesday.

Why Slot should drop Mohamed Salah

It hardly requires microscopic analysis to determine that Liverpool were far below par on Saturday, but microscopic analysis has been rife since, spreading like damp on an old wall.

Mohamed Salah against Nottingham Forest

Perhaps, Liverpool had an off day. Perhaps, this is a new system with a new boss, and hiccups are to be expected, especially early on.

But such setbacks can’t continue, must not continue. Liverpool were a day late and a dollar short, and the scarcely altered starting lineup across this first month of the era has to now change, or Slot will face the same issues as his predecessor and see his first-team reduced by the snapping jas of injury setbacks.

Salah was not the only home player to toil on Saturday, but he did put in a pretty dire performance. The Merseysiders were possibly lulled into a false sense of infallibility after an emphatic start to the campaign, but as skipper Virgil van Dijk said, the recent loss was “unacceptable” and a “reality check”.

The Egyptian has scored three goals and supplied three assists so far for Liverpool this season but after starting both of his nation’s international fixtures over the past couple of weeks, it’s important that he is rotated to preserve fitness and juggle the workload.

Though he’s a world-class athlete, Salah is 32 years old. He made 3.8 ball recoveries per 90 during the 2017/18 Premier League season, his first at Liverpool, but so far this year just 2.31, as per FBref. This is only natural; Salah has tweaked his game accordingly as he is still one of the best in the business.

But AC Milan put Venezia to the sword last weekend, ploughing into a four-goal lead after half an hour, and any languidness will be found out.

That’s why it might be high time to make a change or two. Diogo Jota has struggled to influence across his past few outings – failing to find the net – and Luis Diaz had an off day after the Tricky Trees, so with Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez waiting in the wings, it would seem apt timing for Slot to make a change.

But Salah, ahh, Salah’s a different story, right? Wrong. He could do with a rest and can always be introduced after the break against Tuesday’s Italian opponents, should he be required. Harvey Elliott’s out injured after fracturing his foot, but maybe it’s time to unleash Federico Chiesa for the first time.

The man to replace Mo Salah

It was a frustrating summer, with a bid to sign Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi foiled by the midfielder’s desire to remain in Basque Country. No alternatives were landed and Liverpool also neglected to improve their backline.

But Chiesa arrived from Juventus for a cut-price £12.5m fee. The versatile forward had been expected to leave Turin all summer with one year remaining on his deal, and Liverpool acted to bypass competition from the likes of Barcelona and complete their frontline.

He’s yet to make his debut but will hope to be in line now, having used the recent international break to build on his fitness and attune to Slot’s system.

Chiesa could also be the perfect weapon against Milan, especially considering that either Gakpo or Nunez are expected to get the nod in midweek. Salah, while an elite-class playmaker, does not have the wheels that he once did and will struggle to stretch the flanks and overload with the same kind of success that Chiesa could have.

The Italy international, indeed, ranks among the top 1% of forwards across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for shot-creating actions and the top 3% for progressive carries per 90.

Salah, conversely, ranks among the top 19% for shot-creating actions but only the top 44% for progressive carries per 90.

Federico Chiesa for Juventus

This could see the 26-year-old work in a kind of dynamic tandem with, say, Gakpo, whose finishing and multi-functionality as a focal striker could prove key in unlocking the hosts’ backline tomorrow.

Liverpool’s new recruit, moreover, scored ten goals across 29 starting appearances in all competitions for Juventus last year, putting the misery of the past injury-riddled years behind him.

He knows Milan well and will feel that he has the tools to unlock the defence. Liverpool will always be at their most threatening when Salah is in the starting line-up but he played 75 minutes in Botswana last week and 90 minutes for Egypt just over one week ago. He needs to be rested ahead of the gruelling fixture list up ahead.

It might just bear dividends in the long run.

Ed Pollock thrashes maiden hundred to keep Worcestershire in hunt

Visiting side build commanding lead after Leicestershire stutter despite Lewis Hill’s 93

Opener Ed Pollock smashed a maiden first-class century to put Worcestershire in complete control of their LV Insurance County Championship fixture against Leicestershire at the UptonSteel County Ground. The former Warwickshire player, who moved to Worcestershire with the aim of playing red-ball cricket, hit ten fours and two sixes as he raced to three figures from 113 deliveries during a protracted final session that closed shortly after 7pm with the visitors leading by 369 runs, and an overnight declaration expected from captain Brett D’Oliveira.Pollock and fellow opener Jake Libby put together a stand of 163 when they began Worcestershire’s second innings, scoring at over five an over after Leicestershire had been bowled out for 213, allrounder Joe Leach taking 4-37 to go with his first innings 70.Resuming on 42 for 3, Leicestershire suffered a big early blow when captain Colin Ackermann, having added only four to his overnight score, was given out leg before when he left a delivery from Leach that came back and hit his back pad, though replays suggested it had not done nearly enough to hit off stump. Lewis Hill battled on, reaching his 50 with a cut to the point boundary, but had an escape when another attempted cut came off the top edge and flew high to first slip, where Pollock got both hands to the ball but could not hang on.Hill and Harry Swindells raised a 50 partnership for the fifth wicket before Swindells was bowled by a swinging delivery from Ed Barnard, and the Worcestershire seamer struck again soon afterwards, Ben MIke checking an on-drive and giving Azhar Ali a simple catch at mid-on.When Hill himself was bowled for 93, chopping a wide delivery from Dillon Pennington into his leg stump, the prospects of the Foxes saving the follow-on looked remote, the more so when Callum Parkinson (somewhat unluckily) and then Ed Barnes (plumb) went leg before, to Charlie Morris and Joe Leach respectively.Another 34 runs were still needed when last man Beuran Hendricks joined Chris Wright at the wicket, but the two played sensibly against the ageing ball, and when D’Oliveira tried spin, Wright hit the young left-armer Josh Baker for three fours down the ground to ensure Leicestershire at least avoided that particular humiliation. They were soon chasing leather, however, as Pollock and Libby thrashed the bowling to all parts, Pollock hitting 16 off the very first over, bowled by Wright. Libby was eventually bowled off the inside edge by MIke, who went on to pick up a flattering 4 for 27 as Worcestershire’s batsmen chased quick runs, Pollock holing out to midwicket.

Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen have South Africa in supreme control

New Zealand’s top order goes missing leaving de Grandhomme and his 36-ball fifty to pull up the slack

Stumps A dozen wickets fell on the second day in Christchurch as South Africa squandered and then seized the advantage in a must-win match. Resuming on 238 for 3, the visitors would have been eyeing a total above 400, but lost 5 for 45 as clouds rolled in and offered the seam movement that had been missing on the opening day. On 302 for 8, even 320 seemed a distance away but Marco Jansen and Keshav Maharaj put on a 62-run ninth-wicket stand to take South Africa past 350. Then, Kagiso Rabada and Jansen ran through New Zealand’s top six to leave them on 91 for 5 but a counter-attacking half-century from Colin de Grandhomme, off 36 balls, took New Zealand eight runs away from avoiding the follow-on.The most notable difference between play on the second day compared to the first was in the conditions. It started in sunshine and there was swing in the air but it soon became overcast and there was some drizzle and the seamers came to life. The pitch also quickened up and run-scoring became less laboured. After hovering at over two an over in the morning session, South Africa scored at more than four an over post lunch while New Zealand’s run-rate was a healthy 3.5. All that resulted in four times the number of wickets falling on day two compared to day one and the game speeding up.Matt Henry created the first opportunity in the fourth over on Saturday. Rassie van der Dussen attempted to drive a ball that swung away but edged to Tim Southee at third slip. After five edges did not carry on the first day, it seemed New Zealand were surprised when one did and the fielder could not hold on. van der Dussen chipped the next ball back to Henry but it fell short and scooted away for three. Finally, Henry had some luck when he bowled Bavuma with a delivery that surprised everyone, that slipped under the bat and knocked over off stump. Two balls later, Henry beat Kyle Verreynne with one that seamed away and missed the edge and two balls after that, Verreynne was nearly run-out at the non-striker’s end as he got off the mark with a risky single. Henry only had to wait until his next over for Verreynne to nick off to second slip. The wicketkeeper batter has now scored just 112 runs from six Test innings and averages 14.00.South Africa lost 2 for 23 in the first 10 overs of the morning and scored only just 16 runs off the next 10 overs and something had to give. Neil Wagner was the beneficiary of the squeeze when van der Dussen, desperate for runs, chased a wide half-volley on one knee and edged to Daryl Mitchell at first slip.Wiaan Mulder, still considered a batting allrounder, looked composed and played crisp drives off the front and back foot before attempting a half-hearted pull shot, and as hard as he tried to bail out, he popped up a top edge that landed safely in Tom Blundell’s gloves. South Africa went to lunch on 298 for 7 and lost Rabada two overs after the break. He became Wagner’s fourth wicket, playing at a ball on fourth-stump line only to get a thick edge to slip.Colin de Grandhomme scored a 36-ball 50•AFP/Getty Images

A short rain delay did not put Jansen or Maharaj off their task and they batted with fluency as New Zealand fell into the trap of peppering Nos. 8 and 10 with short balls. Maharaj brought out the upper cut off Henry, Jansen was strong on the pull off Wagner, then Maharaj flayed Wagner for three boundaries in an over to bring up the fifty-run stand and sliced Southee through cover for four. Kyle Jamieson, who had not had any success earlier in the innings, put an end to South Africa’s chutzpah when he had Maharaj caught at gully and Lutho Sipamla caught in the slips to end South Africa’s innings 25 minutes before the scheduled tea break. The tourists used that time to their advantage. Rabada removed both openers in 10 deliveries to make South Africa’s total look like much more than it is. Tom Latham was caught down the leg side by Verreynne, diving to his right, and Will Young was done in a manner more conventional, nicking off to a ball he should have left outside off.Rabada started the final session on fire too, much to Devon Conway’s discomfort. In three successive balls, South Africa reviewed an lbw chance that was too high, had an appeal for caught behind that came off the thigh and a ball that beat that bat by a whisker. Conway also survived an lbw shout off Sipamla, playing his first Test since the series against Sri Lanka in early 2021, and almost handed Rabada a return catch before falling to the second leg-side strangle of the innings off Jansen.Mulder was brought on after 20 overs and convinced Dean Elgar to go for two reviews in three balls in his second over. The first hit Mitchell above the knee roll and was umpire’s call on clipping the bails, the second was in a similar spot with the same batter caught on the crease. Ball-tracking showed this one was missing the stumps altogether. Mitchell gave thanks to the heavens and remained batting to the close but some of his partners were not quite so lucky.Nicholls was caught by a strategically-placed fielder halfway to the point boundary as he failed to keep the cut down and Blundell bowled while shouldering arms to Rabada. South Africa would have sensed an opportunity to run through New Zealand but de Grandhomme didn’t give it to them.He took on the bowling, especially the inexperienced pair of Mulder, who he hit for a six and back-to-back fours in the same over, and Sipamla, who he cut for four and pulled for six off successive balls. He brought up fifty with a drive to deep cover and then changed gears to see out the day. South Africa used the last review on the penultimate ball of the day when Sipamla appealed for lbw against Mitchell, but he had inside-edged the ball. While South Africa will be pleased with their efforts, especially with the ball, they may still have some concern about their bowling discipline. While New Zealand bowled 41 maidens out of 133 – a third – South Africa sent down 11 out of 45, less than a quarter.

Leeds could forget Hamer with ambitious swoop for "incredible" free agent

da winzada777: Leeds United head into the first international break of the 2024/25 campaign sitting in fourth place in the Championship table after four matches.

da marjack bet: The Whites started the season with back-to-back draws with Portsmouth and West Bromwich Albion, 3-3 and 0-0 respectively, before losing 3-0 to Middlesbrough in the League Cup.

However, they have since bounced back from their disappointing start with a 2-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday and a 2-0 win over Hull City, with the latter coming at Elland Road on Saturday.

Mateo Joseph and Joel Piroe scored the goals for the Whites in West Yorkshire at the weekend to secure all three points for Daniel Farke's side.

That clash with the Tigers came less than 24 hours after the summer transfer window slammed shut on Friday night, after months of incoming and outgoings at Elland Road.

The likes of Archie Gray, Georginio Rutter, Crysencio Summerville, and Glen Kamara all secured permanent exits from the club over the summer.

Meanwhile, Leeds brought in Largie Ramazani, Manor Solomon, Ao Tanaka, Alex Cairns, Jayden Bogle, Joe Rothwell, Joe Rodon, and Isaac Schmidt.

The Whites did, however, fail in an attempt to make a ninth addition to Farke's playing squad in the final few days of the summer transfer window.

Leeds failed to sign Championship star

It was reported that Leeds were interested in a deal to sign attacking midfielder Gustavo Hamer from Championship rivals Sheffield United towards the end of the month.

The Yorkshire-based outfit reportedly made an initial offer of £13m to secure the former Coventry City star from Bramall Lane, but that was not enough to tempt the Blades.

It was also claimed that the Whites went back in with a second bid that included Joel Piroe going to Chris Wilder's side, along with an undisclosed fee paid to the relegated side.

However, Sheffield United had no interest in signing Piroe as they did not believe that he suited what they needed in their squad, and the Dutchman went on to score for Leeds against Hull after the deadline passed.

Their failure to convince the Blades to part ways with the midfielder, who produced four goals and six assists in the Premier League last season, was a shame as he is a proven Championship performer.

As you can see in the table above, Hamer has recorded an eye-catching 22 direct goal contributions in his last 45 appearances in the division for Coventry and Sheffield United combined.

The 27-year-old magician is an attacking midfielder who can provide a huge threat as both a scorer and a creator of goals at Championship level.

However, the Dutch wizard will now continue to showcase his quality in South Yorkshire, rather than West, with Wilder's side for the rest of this season, or at least until January.

How Leeds can forget about Gustavo Hamer

Leeds did not land an alternative number ten option before the summer transfer window officially slammed shut on Friday night but that does not mean that they have their hands tied behind their back until the winter.

The Whites can still dip into the market to attract free agent options at any time, as players who are not contracted to a club can still make moves in the coming days and weeks, despite the window being closed.

There are plenty of high-quality players who have yet to find a new team to play for this season and that means that there is still a chance for Farke to add an attacking midfielder to the group to bolster his side's play-off chances.

Per Transfermarkt, there are a number of attacking midfielders who are without a club at the moment, including Dele Alli, Iker Muniain, Rafinha, and Anton Miranchuk.

Leeds, as they do not have to pay a transfer fee to a team to secure their services, could be ambitious with their free agent target and go for a high-quality option.

The most valuable free agent attacking midfielder, per Transfermarkt, is former Lille number ten Yusuf Yazici, who is valued at €10m (£8.4m) by the site.

Why Leeds should swoop for Yusuf Yazici

The Whites must now attempt to convince the Turkey international to move to England to play in the Championship, as it would allow the club to move on from Hamer and forget about the Sheffield United man.

Aged 27, Yazici is not in the final throes of his career, and is the same age as Hamer in fact, and could come in at the peak of his powers for Leeds.

It will not be an easy move to get done, though, as it has been reported that Olympiacos, Galatasaray, and Nice are among the teams interested in signing the free agent, which is another reason why this would be an ambitious transfer for the 49ers to pull off.

If they could convince Yazici to move to Elland Road, though, he has the potential to be an excellent addition to the squad, after an impressive year with Lille.

The Turkish whiz, who was once dubbed an "incredible" talent by former Arsenal star Mesut Ozil, racked up 12 goals and four assists in all competitions for the French side.

As you can see in the table above, Yazici was directly involved in seven goals in 27 appearances, whilst Hamer was involved in three more in nine more outings in the Premier League.

The free agent ace scored more goals in nine fewer matches in a major European league and this suggests that he could arrive at Leeds and provide a big goal threat, if he can improve his output by playing at a lower level in the second tier in England.

Yazici, who scored 29 goals in 135 matches for Lille during his time in France, could allow Farke to forget all about Hamer by coming in as a fantastic option in the number ten position, which is why the club should launch an ambitious swoop for his services.
